The Road

Post by Canelek »

Based on the book of the same title by Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men), this is a bleak story of a father (Viggo Mortensen) and son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic America.

There is no explanation for why the world had pretty much gone tits-up, but it is rather brutally displayed, with constant ash falling, devastated towns and infrastructure, frequent earthquakes and pretty much no life, plant nor animal). Well, there is some life, but mostly in the form of cannibals, which pretty much sucks, since they are not zombies but are just as hungry and are armed.

Father and son are trying to travel further south along the coast to find more "nice people" like themselves. Along the way, they meet a few other non-cannibal scavengers, Robert Duvall in particular puts on a nice performance. Armed with a revolver and a single bullet, father and son are basically just trudging along waiting to use it on the boy, so he does not have to witness the horror of getting captured and eaten.

I'll not talk about the ending, but it isn't a completely bleak film.

Anyway, Viggo pretty much nails his role and shows mucho range in his acting chops. Man, he was on top of his game. The kid was pretty damn good too, but I'd rather the word "papa" not be bleated so fucking much!

I was anticipating more action, but this was more like a story of the human spirit, which served pretty damn well, imo.

8/10

Yeah, it came out on DVD last week or so. I watched it via Netflix. Definately one to watch! I actually found it slightly boring until I rewatched a few scenes and thought about it. I guess it took me a bit to absorb what the director was trying to convey. May read the book also. :)

It's a good movie, but it's one of those movies that I need to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy. Just keep in mind that it's pretty depressing and watch it when you know what yo're in for.

The book was good too. The casting was spot on!

I thought it was so so for an post apocalypse type movie. Props for giving the actors bad teeth though.

I didn't like the shopping cart.

Just watched the movie, and as usual, Mortensen doesn't disappoint.

I also noticed Omar from The Wire, which was hilarious. "It's all in the game, homie. That's why I wanted to steal your canned goods."

I watched this last night, and enjoyed it. Bleak and depressing yes, but it was a good movie.
