My local metropark is making kayak rentals available starting this weekend. I've gone a few times in the past but I'm going to get really into it this summer, as I am finally not working 9-5, M-F.
The park rents out kayaks all day, $5 for a single, $7 for a double. I don't know anything about equipment, very little about technique, even less about safety. I'm in shape but my lats, traps and biceps are pretty fucking embarassing and I want to avoid hurting myself at all costs.
Anybody kayak?

Re: Kayaking
We have a couple touring kayaks (NOT what you would see/use in whitewater) which are probably what they have for rentals. If this will be on a river, or any body of water with a current...start your trip by going against the current. That will save you a LOT of pain
Also, don't wear any expensive sunglasses while kayaking. I still have a pair in either the Colorado River or the Gulf of Mexico

Re: Kayaking
I used to have one of the sit in kayaks made for your routine types of moving water and now have a sit on top model that is made more for open bodies of water...although I have had it on some rivers with good results. Most of the kayaks are pretty stable and you would have ot really try to tip them over. My sit on top model can be used as a dive platform and I am not sure it is possible to tip it over....it is stable enough to stand up in.
If you are in moving water, don't try to be cool. Wear your vest. On lakes and such, well that can be different, but I would not be without the vest unless you are definitely within your swimming range of safety. Other than that, there is not a whole lot to them.
