Post again when you get at least 20 expansions! It's more than .10 per expansion as it stands.

That's over 150 zones per dollar.

How can you not have a monthly fee!

But yeah... They should have had specials like this years ago. I fear its a bit late now since for a lot of people the latest expansion was their GoD expansion. And we all remember how fun that was! I'm sure more than a few people left.

I'll be back when they announce the shutdown of the servers. And I'm sure I'll feel depressed about it when it happens.

I reactivated back in December / January just to fuck around. Loaned my account to a friend when I quit, so I was only like 2 expansions and 5 levels off. Although he did me the favor of not leaving any platinum on my character, there was a fuckton in his guildbank, so I just robbed it.

Looked like the same guilds were raiding that were when I quit (Cestus, Township, Kratos, Five Rings, Only the Brave) and there were still a lot of casual-ish guilds around that I recognized; however in a two or three week span of time logging on every couple of days I saw maybe 3 or 4 people that I actually knew from when I played. Sad sad.

Still, it was cool to bask in nostalgia. I went and did Sleepers Tomb with Senlarona (monk that was in CoE with me, and I think she might have also been in legacy of virtues when I was) and a pretty cool enchanter guy named Scaevola (he is fairly oldschool, had just reactivated his account as well, I think he had been in Sceptered Isle) which was neato. Those new mercenary things are fairly decent, the healer one kept us up and never went below 90% mana, although it's really old content and we were all 75-80 (i think, or 70-75, i forget) Tried to solo high Priest in Ssra but that shit would have taken like two hours, so I bailed on that at around 95% of his hitpoints :p.

I ran all around kunark, velious, and antonica; I couldn't figure out where to download map packs from, but still remembered all of the zones so it didn't really matter (which is kind of sad, to be honest). I got lost in highpass because apparently they redid the whole fucking zone, but otherwise most of it is the same as it was 4 years ago. I also tried to go solo the dude at the top of Skyshrine, but I got lost in the stupid god damn maze for like an hour.

I might reactivate in April for the anniversary shit, although I doubt I'll be able to con anyone into taking a little paladin in 3-4 year old gear, might be worth a shot. I think this year's anniversary stuff is Gates of Discord, so I'm sure it will be like reliving a nightmare, but it would still be pretty awesome. Aslanna, if you're reading this, get CD to take me imo; I even still remember how all of the fights go! I have flags and keys for every zone! I even still have some gear from Tacvi! Who cares if I've got less hitpoints than your wizards?!

From what I saw the server wasn't entirely dead, like I said there are still like 5 raiding guilds, but it seemed like a server-merge wouldn't kill anybody either.

Worst case I'll be back when they announce server shut downs, but I get a feeling I'll decide to reactivate before then. I won't be able to do much though, being a bard that hasn't logged in since GoD.

Yeah... The latest expansion seems to have killed a lot of casual guilds. SOE listened to the top hardcore raiding guilds who said they last expansion was too easy and they needed to go hardcore. So yeah... Even the first tier content of Underfoot was above the top tier content of the previous expansion. Which was ridiculous.. You need to give something for everyone to do. Oh well just another case of the developers doing stupid shit.

Winnow could solo that new expansion with her Planes of Power gear! EQ players are losing their toughness and are more like WoW players! Winnow could give Chuck Norris a run for his money on a Solo run through every EQ expansion without rest!

Can you get a full AA in one kill these days from trash mobs?

To be fair, that's been the trend for as long as I ever played with exception to maybe Dragons of Norrath. Each successive expansion had a greater difficulty curve and essentially required the top-end gear from the previous to be successful, although you could usually accomplish the first tier without being exceptional or having all of the best gear from the previous end-game zone, you often couldn't go any further. (SoL -->PoP --> GoD --> OoW --> DoN doesn't count!!!--> DoD --> PoR (I quit here))

I remember we fell behind a little bit in Omens of War which then got exacerbated with Depths of Darkhollow (we never made it into demiplane, couldn't get the spider queen down) so that by the time Prophecy came out we could only kill a few of the easier world bosses and maybe one boss in the first raiding zone (tower of zek iirc).

Everquest was always too hardcore to be truly successful once games that actually catered the the casual majority came along (EQ2 / WoW and all MMOs since.) Not just the raiding and gear scaling issue, but also how absurd it became to keep up with all of the required AAs after GoD.

Personally I enjoyed the more hardcore-centric aspect of EQ, and would still be playing today if they had the subscription base (and thus income) to put out quality and timely content with well populated servers and a strong community. However, due the fact that an exceeding majority of people that play online games these days are by no means in the realm of hardcore, you cannot run a game that doesn't cater to those people, at least to some extent, and expect to retain a moderate to large subscription base.

EQ never did anything inherently wrong to lose its player-base (sure, class balance was never great, but that never stopped people from playing bards OH SNAP), it just catered to the wrong group of people. Hardcores will play a casual game as long as they have content to do that at least feels somewhat rewarding - casuals won't play a hardcore game for very long before they hit the glass ceiling and quit.
