Oct 09 Games you're looking forward to.

Post by Winnow »

October is shaping up to be a great month.

The top two games I'm looking forward to this month are:

Borderlands and Magna Carta but there's also Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend that look solid as well.

Borderlands:

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platfor ... orderlands
Publisher: 2K Games

Developer: Gearbox Software

Genre(s): First-Person Shooter, Action, Role-Playing Game

Players: 4

ESRB Rating: M (Mature)

Release Date: October 20, 2009
Summary

As the first title in an all-new sci-fi action franchise, Borderlands combines the best elements of Gearbox Software's first-person action titles with player customization and vehicular combat. Borderlands features a unique content generation system allowing for near-endless variety in missions, environments, enemies, weapons, item drops and character customization. Borderlands is a cooperative experience, allowing for multiple players to share the same game experience simultaneously online. Players can freely join or leave each other’s games at anytime, or choose to play in the full single-player mode. Borderlands features life-like character animations, impressive real-time physics, and customizable vehicles.
Magna Carta:

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platfor ... agnacarta2
Publisher: Namco Bandai Games

Developer: SoftMax

Genre(s): Role-Playing Game

Players: 1

ESRB Rating: T (Teen)

Release Date: October 13, 2009
Summary

Magnacarta 2 introduces an original new storyline driven by intense themes of love, hate, politics, betrayal and the ultimate question of choosing one’s own fate. Players are immersed in the world of the Lanzheim Continent, a conflict-ridden land deeply divided by a fierce civil war. Powered by the Unreal Engine3 and featuring character designs by famed Korean artist Hyung-Tae Kim, the game bears a striking visual style unlike any other RPG through its blend of photo-realism and Japanese manga influences. The deeply emotional story is driven by beautifully rendered CGI cut-scenes featuring fully voiced dialogue to draw players into the immersive experience. Delivering more than 40 hours of gameplay, Magnacarta 2 features a unique battle system which combines strategic turn-based battles and real-time gameplay, creating a fresh twist on the traditional RPG formula. The game seamlessly blends world navigation and battles as everything happens in the same environment with no load screens or abrupt changes in the action when a fight begins or ends. Players can utilize objects found in the environment to their advantage and likewise, creatures and field objects dynamically react to the player’s actions. A free roaming camera further adds to the unrestricted interaction with the world. Players are also given flexible control over their party with the ability to pre-assign attributes for each AI character and freedom to easily switch control between all the characters at any time. Magnacarta 2 features a variety of adaptable options to keep the action fresh throughout the game. By defeating monsters, players obtain Kamonds which can be used to enhance a variety of weapons as well as create new items. When players change their weapon, they take on a different fighting style that adapts all the related moves and skills to that weapon’s attributes. While normal skills can be performed by any player at any time, special moves require skillfully timed actions to exploit the rhythm of the battle to their advantage. The pinnacle of special moves is the over-drive mode where players can use the most powerful combination of skills at one time to perform devastating attacks to defeat enemies. KAN (magic), representing the four elements of nature (Wind, Water, Lightning and Fire), adds another dimension to gameplay whereby players generate KAN for use in battle and to affect environmental objects in various ways

Brutal Legend - Rocktober 13th

and

Borderlands - October 20th

Those are my 2 "Day 1" games for this month. I'll get Magna Carta 2 when it's under 30$ since I have so many other JRPGs to play right now. Brutal Legend falls under the dates for Toys R Us's annual "buy 2 get 1 free" sale. I just need to think of 2 more games that I want.

A little more detail on Magna Carta II which is a classic Japanese RPG.

I have a gallery of the design artist for this game on Art Website:

http://stuff.thathappened.com/thumbnails.php?album=68

some good stuff there.

Here's some game play:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCYupKwuY-0

It's classic FF type RPG which is always a good thing in my book (just depends how well they pull it off)

I enjoy building up characters, and stuffs which is why I think I'll like Borderlands as well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdBFWti6mkg

There's supposed to be a shit ton of guns etc in the game but if I don't get a good storyline and sense of purpose in the game, I think I'll get bored of an FPS type shooter.

Designer explaining the game a bit:

---

These aren't as polished as Uncharted II and Brutal Legend but should be fun for level/loot hounds.

Borderlands and Uncharted 2. Those two games might actually be able to pull me away from WoW for a few weeks.

Hmmmm, a sequel to a very average JRPG, exclusive to a console that's a bust in Asia from a developer that's had little success outside of Korea...

It looks nice but I wouldn't put expectations too high on it.

On the other hand, Borderlands and Brutal Legend look to be pretty damn good.

I'm not going to argue with you on this one. It very well could suck. From the game play vids, it looked like the same FF type battle system I like so I may enjoy it despite the lower overall quality.

I've had Brutal Legend and Magna Carta 2 for a few days now but have only played them for my standard 30 minutes due to Demon Souls.

Brutal Legend:

Looks fun! It's entertaining in a summer movie kind of way with all the cursing and comments.

Magna Carta 2:

This game has the exact same feel of a Final Fantasy game but with slightly lower production values although looks pretty good to me.

The story is typical hum drum and you have a bit of punching A button to get through meaningless dialog. Looks definitely worth a bargain bin pickup after the holiday game rush settles down.

I passed on Brutal Legend due to the short single player aspect, which is between 4-8 hours depending on the reviewer. I'll get it in 6 months when it's 20$.

Borderlands is really looking to be a fantastic experiance. I've heard everywhere from 50-80 hours of gameplay on that, and DLC has already been announced. The first DLC will be.... Zombies! And will hit before the end of 2009 for 10$. You also have 4 different classes to play in that game and each class has different specs.

I'd get it but it would just sit unopened until I'm done with Demon's Souls

Brutal Legend has very high production values but it feels like watching a movie. Kinda walk though stuff you gotta do step by step. Value-wise, Demon's Souls kicks it' ass but Brutal Legend will be a fun game to play eventually.

Borderlands Im unsure of. The concept sounds great but I watched some game play and it looks like a standard FPS with kind lower level graphics. I know they have 1 million weapon combos, but watching the game play didn't inspire much and if you have a shitload of weapons but no sense of accomplishment of direction, it may not be as fun. I really don't know yet. Will see if it passes my 30 minute test.

The story in Demon's Souls is pretty weak but the game play is so challenging and rewarding that you will replay levels over and over to master them. I can't name ay other game that i spend six hours re attempting the same exact thing, after having to battle though the rest of the zone to get to that point, and knowing a boss awaited after that point and if I didn't defeat the boss, i'd have to do the whole damn thing over again...and I would have : )

It has multiplayer, which lands it solidly on the 360 for everyone except for Miir I'd say.

Not sold on Borderlands, but then I pretty much tend to shun all FPS titles these days.

I am looking forward to White Knight Chronicles and I have Magna Carta 2 in my stack of games to play once I am done with Fo3GOTY and Demon Souls. The first Magna Carta had sucky gameplay, but descent story and girls with huge tits, so it was enough to get me to try the second one, even though it is a 360 game (I have literally not touched my 360 since I beat Last Remnant) and I am loath to power it up. I still have the FF4 sequel on the Wii to play and I want to replay Jade Empire at some point too. I wasted a lot of time this month replaying FO1 and FO2, getting amped up for the GOTY release, too. My wife is currently playing FF12 and then has plans to play Brutal Legend (she just beat Arkham) once she needs a break from the grinding.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
