Transformers II

Post by Sargeras »

A more interesting way to start a thread here... I got this email this morning and debating if I should go for it. Transformers and Iron Man were both filmed at my base, so I know that this will have a huge turnout.

When I saw the title of this thread my only concern was whether or not Megan Fox would be in it.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Michael Bay has stated since the start that he is going to be doing a campaign of misinformation during the entire production in order to curb spoilers, so myself and others are taking almost everything with a grain of salt as far as plot details are concerned. Some of the plot details I've read for this so far have been pretty crazy and nothing like anything I would've imagined for the franchise.

I'd hope they would say "Let's give him the sex scene with Megan and see how it pans out after 7 or 8 takes."

Reviews for the Michael Bay epic are scathing. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the first film pulled in a decent 57% approval rating and 5.8/10 average score. 'Fallen' however sits at 20% and 3.9/10.

Other films to have scored a 3.9/10 include the first "Tomb Raider" film, Oliver Stone's much-panned "Alexander", Kevin Costner disaster "The Postman", the worst of the Trek films "Star Trek V", and the god awful "Miss Congeniality 2".

On Metacritic the story isn't much better. The original scored 61/100, whereas 'Fallen' sits at 40/100. Other films to have scored 40 include "Fantastic Four", "The Day the Earth Stood Still" remake, "Saw 2" and "Anacondas: Hunt for the Blood Orchid".

DVD for me! Several of my friends have seen it and said it was just terrible.

Hilarious! I'll probably wait for the Blu Ray on this, since I doubt I could get my girlfriend to go see it in the theater.

I second that review being hilarious. I guess it's a telling sign when all the actors are like "we weren't making an 'acting' movie here."

My thoughts on it...
[Show]
I guess let me get the things that annoyed me out of the way...
Anything that had to do with the twins
Any scene where Shia and Megan Fox are talking about their feelings, I could do with A scene with this, but not the 4 or 5 that it ended up being
Devastator's a chump
The "red shirt" plain decepticons & multiple Constructicons who died at various points
The storyline bothered me, because it didn't really make sense at all to me. I realize that this is a Transformers movie, but I compare it to the 1986 movie who's story destroys this and the first's story imo.
Transformer design still bothers me, because while I think the fight scenes were better, it's still hard to tell what's going on sometimes because it looks like SHIT LOAD OF DENTED/METAL WITH LINES AGAINST ANOTHER SHITLOAD OF DENTED/METAL WITH LINES
T-X, I mean the Blonde Decepticon
The Fallen
Megatron following the Fallen, I think it should have been more like the Galvatron/Unicron relationship
Geriatric Jetfire

Things I liked...
Optimus' fight in the woods, it was focused on the Transformers, not a shot of humans with Transformers in the background
Starscream, I loved him being a badass in the first one who people were afraid of, but this also showed more of his personality from the cartoons -- the self-serving coward
Soundwave, he isn't a speak box, but what he was, was good enough
I found the parent's scenes funny, close to over the top, but still funny

I know there's got to be more things I liked, I just can't think of them now. Maybe that says a lot of the movie! I'll still buy it on DVD though. I wish I could take Forest fight scene and put it in the first one.

I think people are being a little too hard on this movie. It was the sequel to a movie based on a cartoon from the 80s, what kind of story are they expecting?

That said, the story wasn't that hard to follow, I'm not sure why I keep reading people not understanding it. It followed a relatively linear line, namely:
[Show]
Bad guy (the Fallen) tried to do some nasty stuff back in the day, and was stopped.
Bad guy has been biding his time.
Bad guy finds what he has been looking for that will allow him to do what he wanted so long ago, tries again.
Protagonists try to figure out what's going on, what they need to do to save the world, stop bad guy.
The end.
I've also heard complaints about people not being able to tell which robot was which. Seriously? It wasn't particularly difficult. Sometimes it would be difficult when Starscream and Megatron were both tag-teaming to tell exactly which one threw which punch, but putting it in context when the fight was over wasn't too difficult. "Oh, the one who got punched in the face and had his windshield wiper broken was Truckasaurus!" And finally, I've also heard complaints that they expected too much (spoilers) suspension of disbelief. In a movie about sentient, transforming robots from outer space? You think they took too much creative license with geography, accents, etc? Whatever, dude!

I found the twins tolerable (even mildly humorous in some parts), I thought "the doctor" was a humorous character, and I liked Jetfire.

Overall, I found it to be an entertaining, action-packed, semi-humorous way to spend an evening with my girlfriend, a soda, and a big bucket of popcorn. Not sure why people were expecting Michael Bay to make anything more than that. Please remember that this guy made: Bad Boys I & II, Pearl Harbor, The Rock, Armageddon, The Island. Anyone who was expecting any more than they got was either being overly nostalgic for the cartoon, or has never seen a Michael Bay movie.

And it had Megan Fox.

I give it at least a B-.

I wasn't expecting some amazing story, but this part really stood out as, "Wtf?"
[Show]
They use the All spark to bring back megatron, but don't for optimus. Also, why was a Prime the only thing that could kill the Fallen?

I wasn't expecting some great storyline, but the using the All spark fragment for Megatron and not using the other for Prime seemed to stand out as fucking retarded.

Also cannot stress enough at how fucking stupid Devastator was in this movie, he's supposed to be a fucking badass and is anything but.

Oh yeah, Prime flipping over something and shooting somebody in the fucking face was so awesomely awesome because it instantly made me think of the '86 movie scene where he does the same thing.
I could follow Robot on Robot combat, but my wife could not. Details are great, but there can be too much of a good thing, and in the case of their designs, I think it could do with less lines... just my personal opinion. I think I did laugh at one line the twins had and I completely forgot about "the doctor" until I read your post.

I would say I was more satisfied with the first one than the second, but I think the forest fight scene absolutely destroys any fight scene from the first. I walked out of The Hangover much more satisfied than when I walked out of this. I still did enjoy the movie though.

I'm hoping for the 3rd movie, they keep with the awesomeness of the Forest Fight scene and try not to have as many way too close camera angles during fights and spin around the actors 30 times while they say 1 line shots -- but it's Michael Bay, I'm probably just being delusional with those wishes. Also, I still want more Transformer screen time...

I've seen that complaint, and my question is this: Does Sam know that the Decepticons used the other fragment to revive Megatron? While I will readily admit that I was sitting in my seat going "Just use the fucking allspark on Optimus you dummy!!!", I was operating under the assumption that we were privy to information that Sam was not. iirc, he didn't even use the allspark to wake up Jetfire until someone else suggested it (that little captured RC Truck Decepticon, maybe?)
I walked out of The Hangover much more satisfied than when I walked out of this. I still did enjoy the movie though.
Don't get me wrong, I thought the Hangover was an A- at least, if not an A. I paid to see that twice in the theater, and was less entertained by Transformers: ROTF(L). I just didn't think that it was as bad as people are making it out to be. My argument is less with you than opinion in general on the internet/tv.

[Show]
I just went with the idea that since it can turn in-animate objects into sentient beings, that it would be a logical step to think that maybe it can bring things back to life. Then again, it also fucking melted Megatron's chest and killed him. I guess I'm thinking too much for a main character who wants to ditch his hot ass girlfriend and TRANSFORMER car for "college" experience.
I think a lot of the hate for this movie comes from a combination of Michael Bay hate (some I agree with, but think half of their hate is just as over the top as his movies!), Rose tinted glasses of people watching a favorite old cartoon remade, and large sticks up people's asses. I know I fall under the second one mostly.

I actually ended up watching this last night, and had one question, that was simply mind boggling to me.
[Show]
After they got the matrix and they were racing to Optimus, which writer thought it would be a good idea to have them stop roughly 2 miles away and let Sam run the rest of the way with it while 9 Decepticons were chasing him? And Bumblebee, who was driving them, goes ahead and meets up with the marines/dead Optimus by himself. Granted, it did make for roughly 45 minutes of extra violence and explosions, but I was so baffled with that more than any other part of the movie.
And the fight in the forest was easily the coolest part of the movie.
