Oh god, the crazies are going to come out in force for this one. I'll probably take some flack for this, but I'm finding it hard to feel much sympathy right now.

So every life is precious and all that, but...

Seriously, could there be a less consequential possible celebrity death? Has Michael Jackson made a relevant song in 15 years? Has he performed a relevant concert in 15 years? Has he made any relevant public appearances in 15 years that weren't just tabloid freakshows? Has he done anything whatsoever worthy of anyone's notice, other than child molestation trials?

I don't really give a shit about what he did since about, after the Bad album, however I think his earlier music was and still is fucking great. Obviously he turned into (or just was the whole time)a serious fucking weirdo, there's no arguing that, but back in the day, he was one hell of a pop icon.

I really don't see how you qualify that statement given that he's probably done a shit load more than any pop singer/artist around now has done.

Edit: To add to the above, I think early Tom Cruise is fucking great, even if he's batshit insane.

Questlove of The Roots tweeted it best:

Oh, don't get me wrong, I think that his old music is fucking great, I listen to it, and I'll continue to do so.

My only point is that he could have died in 1997 or 2009 or 2030 and it wouldn't make one bit of difference to anyone who doesn't know him personally.

Yeah, I mean, I don't deny that at all. I guess it seemed to me like he was already dead, maybe? I had no hope of ever seeing him do something relevant again, and I still don't.

So if Ed Geen had wrote a book you enjoyed before he started making lamp shades you would still be sad to see him go? On top of what sueven said about him falling out of relevancy decades ago, he was a sick fucked up, bad person.

I'm not saying I'm glad he's dead but I'm sure not bothered by it in the least.

His family has my sympathies but I'm not particularly sad at his passing either..

The artist defines the art and the last 15 years tarnished the memories of what he produced IMO.

This is still one of the most electric performances. It's Michael Jackson's First Moonwalk at Motown's 25th Anniversary.

I think it may still be too soon for my Farrah joke, but...

Did you hear how Michael Jackson died?
It's being reported that he choked on a small bone.

When Farrah Fawcett got to heaven, God told her he'd grant her one wish. She said she just wanted all the children in the world to be safe. So God killed Michael Jackson.

I'm getting f'ing annoyed with the "news networks" here. Real news is being eclipsed by a factor of 20:1 by the MJ mourning frenzy.

jokes aside, his is the most notable pop star life to have existed ever, with maybe Elvis as the one possible exception. Regardless of his darkened later career (remember he was acquitted of all charges and an easy target for false allegations that equaled mega bucks for families) he did sell upwards of 750,000,000 albums. he crafted an image that will never be mistaken for any other person, and hey he helped forward the transgender movement with terrible elective surgery. anyway, i guess that's what happens to you when you become transcendingly famous by age five.

Also this:
"The news of Michael Jackson’s death is so shocking. I think in recent years it has been so easy to take shots at him. I know I had kind of forgotten how amazing he was before he morphed into the individual so far removed from the Michael Jackson we used to know. A few months ago I was randomly looking at YouTube videos and I started watching old clips of Michael Jackson dancing. I was so entranced I stayed up past 3 am just watching video after video. He was truly amazing. What really struck me about the videos was how well his dancing holds up. Watching him from 25 years ago the moves still look incredibly modern. Michael was popping and locking before anyone even had a name for it. Back when the Solid Gold Dancers were the height of popular dance, Jackson was 25 years ahead of his time." - Annie Duke
