Sony's own Qore leaked the PSP Go today..

Here's the Youtube vid.

It's a slider device, an evolution of the PSP, not a new console. Sony is keeping the PSP 3000 around and it will be supported as well.

I was considering trading in my 3k for one of these before I saw it. Right now I'm not so sure. The thing looks like a carpal tunnel creation machine.

Here are some of the highlights mentionned from the Qore video.

• The Go's 16 gigs of flash memory and bluetooth support ("You can also tether it to your cell phone,") are touted.
• In discussing the PSP Go's video-playing capability, it sounds like the rental service through PSN will extend to the PSP Go.
• PSP Go will not replace the PSP-3000; the 3000 will still be kept on the market.
• The PSP Go will arrive this fall.
• It's 43 percent lighter than the PSP-3000
• It has a 3.8-inch screen

Eh.. It's ok I guess. No UMD though which means all games will have to be digitally bought/downloaded. I'm not a big fan of that as it effectively kills the rental/used game market. Which I'm sure is what publishers like Sony want to have happen. And unless all the previous games have a digital equivalent you'll be missing out on those as well. So while it might be a decent device it's not really something that would interest me . Also as a retailer I don't think I'd be very keen on having to keep two different models around.

No kidding. I suspect retailers are also going to be pretty unhappy about having to stock boxes that only contain a piece of paper with a code on it for these releases as well as their UMD equivalents.

Yeah.. Maybe they'll go that route and not do any UMD's anymore. Frankly I'd enjoy it because the battery lasts a lot longer when the disk isn't spinning.

I personally could care less about "the ability to physically hold a disk" but some people are really hung up on that.

couldn't care less*

And really it's not just the ability to hold a disk but to do something with it. Such as lend it to a friend.. Sell it.. Or whatever. There are many benefits to having something tangible that you can hold on to.

I laughed when they announced the price at E3. Do they fucking ever learn?!? This is dead in the water at that price.

I'm sure it's 'dead in the water ' for you, but it will sell millions at that price point.

I don't know. I wonder how many people will want to trade in their current PSP's for that, not only because of the price point but well, the buttons are cramped and shitty. I also severely doubt they are going to pull in a ton of new buyers with the PSP Go, I think it's more likely that the new buyers will go for the old PSP at a reduced price.

Well, some people are still saying the current PSP is a flop despite sales of 50 million units in less than 5 years.

You could probably say something similar about the DSI... higher price point, same technology with only some added (mostly useless in my opinion) features.
Those fucking things are flying off the shelves.
As far as the dpad and buttons are concerned, the placement/spacing looks similar to the standard playstation controller... I'm sure they are ergonomically fine.

Go to any board and people are in disbelief about the price, even the fanbois. Of course it will sell. It just will not sell well.

DSi may be higher priced than the DS.. But it's still not in the range of the Go. I'm not really seeing the innovation here that makes the newer model $80 more or whatever it is. It has a 'sliding screen' oooo. Even that's not anything new.

I'm not saying it's going to fail.. Just that I don't see myself buying one. I also don't see it flying off the shelves either.

I think Sony is probably more concerned about what actual consumers (not message board trolls) think of their products.

If Nintendo listened to the fanboys and tolls on internet forums, they would have been worried sick that NOBODY would buy the DSi... I mean how can they justify a 50% price increase for 2 shitty/gimmicky cameras and wifi with a crappy web browser?

I own a PSP so I guess that makes me an actual consumer. And I think the PSP Go is priced ridiculously high for the sort of device it is. So not really sure what you're getting at with the "message board trolls" thing.

And the DSi is only $40 more than the DS. How do you get a 50% increase? Unless my math skills are horribly out of whack a 50% increase would place a DSi at $190.

I do not own a PSP, but if I were to buy one there is no way in hell I would buy a PSP Go for 250$. I would rather get a PSP 3000 at the cheaper price and still use UMDs. But you know, my opinion doesn't matter because I only spend 2-3k$ a year on video games and hardware so I'm probably not what Sony are looking for in a new customer.

I have a PSP and see no reason to upgrade to the 3000 or the Go.

Not getting into you and miir's thing, but what confuses me is this:

I fall into the same category you put yourself into, which is a category you would think the companies would always want to cater to, cause you can always count on (us) to spend the money.

However with the success of the Wii, all three companies are trying harder to go for the casual audience than ever before.

This is where you get into the weird part, which is - if you want to bring new gamers into the market, and/or have any hope of selling like the DS, why would you price something like they priced the Go? Doesn't make any sense from a marketing standpoint, and lets be realistic - the corporations lose money on their consoles for years if not indefinitely anyhow, so how big of a deal is pricing it a bit lower if you are actually confident about your product?

The DSi is $199 in Canada.
I own a PSP so I guess that makes me an actual consumer.
I was replying more to Fair than you...
In the past he's whined about the price of the PS3 and that Blu-Ray discs were too expensive.

All this coming from someone who won't hesitate to (repeatedly) drop $80-$100 on on a bunch of videogames that will probably sit on the shelf unplayed.

Yeah, I spend more than the average person on gaming and other forms of entertainment. However, I am also extremely price conscious (cheap?). This is where my opinion comes in that the PSP Go is laughably priced. The fact that the DSi was priced so high compared to the other DS lines should've been an opening for Sony to step in with something competitive. Instead, they slammed that door shut with another stupidly high price point.

It's just not worth what they are charging, especially when compared to thier own product.

So much for that theory:
PSP GO battery life slightly less than PSP 3000
The EU Playstation blog has confirmed that the PSP Go has a bit less battery life than the PSP 3000. The new PSP has between three to six hours of battery time for games, while movie playback lasts for around three to five hours. The PSP 3000 reportedly has four to six hours (games) and four to five hours (UMD videos)

The only thing that keeps my PSP functioning is my GameFly subscription. If I wasn't constantly getting new games to mess around with for a couple days/weeks, that thing would never see the light of day. The Go removes ALL ability to rent games and movies.

So now you have a device that is still less portable than a DS (screen is still exposed, WTF is the point of covering the controls when the screen is going to get raped living in a pocket?), and now the only way to get new games/movies is to BUY them and download them. Most games for the PSP suck balls, and what good is a PSP resolution movie even if you can play it on your computer or TV?

So a more expensive device that fixes none of the flaws of the previous version, but introduces massive inconvenience to the end user? Sony is truly an innovator in the field of suck.
