Blizzard shenanigans

Post by Fairweather Pure »

Every year on April Fool's Day, Blizzard does some pretty good little jokes. This year was no different.

For WoW, they had "pimp my mount" and details on the new Dance Battle System.

For SC2, they have a great voltron-esque new unit for the terran, complete with animations and voice work.

Diablo 3 shows a new character class, the Archivist.

It looks like a lot of work went into the SC2 and D3 spoofs. It kind of sucks, since neither of those sites have gotten a decent update in ages, then all they do is April Fool's Day stuff.

The Archivist one was great. Pimp My Mount was pretty lame. Other 2 were middle of the field!

Not bad.

Goddamn though, I wish a game could come along and take them down a notch or two. The popularity of the game is ruining it for a lot of people who don't want pop-references around every corner. WoW is becoming the MTV of MMOs.

Last year's WoW joke was significantly better than this year's (8-bit Molten Core), but the other two are pretty good.

WoR had a good one though, arguably better than Blizzard's own.
That's right! Patch 3.2's secret raid instance is another for Caverns of Time, called "The Damaged Portal"! In this new Onyxia-style, single-encounter instance, you'll be able to challenge foes of yore -- now increased in power to level 80, thanks to the toiling of the Infinite Dragonflight -- and receive all-new epic rewards! If you enjoyed experiencing old content anew with Naxxramas, you'll be sure to love this instance.

Even better, Caverns of Time: The Damaged Portal will take RNG to a whole new level with the new "Damaged Portal" mechanic. Launch yourself through the Damaged Time Portal; where you'll end up, no one knows! The portal's destination even changes when you wipe or exit the instance. Exciting! Thrilling! WOW!
Boss List

Remember, this boss list is only a sampling. The notes we received included mention of up to 27 different bosses for the release of patch 3.2, and apparently Blizzard doesn't plan to stop there.

* The Hogginator - Hogger has returned, and he's pissed. Battle him for dominance and control of Elwynn Forest, and ultimately all of the Eastern Kingdoms in this shard of The Damaged Portal.
* Defense of Darkshire: Part Deux - The Infinite Dragonflight has empowered Stitches, and you're the only thing that can prevent him from destroying Darkshire and moving on Stormwind City. If you enjoy the excitement of Patchwerk, then Stitches is sure to whet your appetite.
* Into Blackrock Spire: Rend's Revenge - No, your Warrior abilities aren't being buffed, sorry. Warchief Rend Blackhand is back, more powerful than ever; he and his drake have been melded together through new technologies provided by the Infinite Dragonflight, and it's up to you to end his reign of terror.
* The Third Time's The Charm - Tempest Keep and Magisters' Terrace were merely setbacks; this time it's for real. To drive this home Blizzard has employed the voice artistry of Tom Cruise as Kael'thas Sunstrider, as he seeks to take control of the ancient relics within Maraudon. Tom Cruise is no cheap voice actor, so you better believe Kael'thas means business.
* A Real Poke In The Eye - C'thun's power is now overwhelming -- his shackles keeping him bound beneath the shifting sands shattered -- thanks to the Infinite Dragonflight. Can you muster the courage to look death in the eye and... poke it?
Going out to play pool now with my fellow klan members. Have a nice night. - Midnyte

I enjoy pop culture references in games... but in moderation.

EQ2 has some really clever references. My favorite from the latest expansion is a Cyclops named Polyphemus sitting on a remote island surrounded by sheep.

That's a direct rip of Greek Mythology. My favorite pop reference was the Stephen Colbert guy with the kill bears quest ("The Number One Threat in Butcherblock").
