Drakenssang - Good old school RPG for PC

Post by Sabek »

Anyone looking for a good old school RPG for the PC should take a look at Drakensang: The Dark Eye.
It is based on a German Pen and Paper system.

Has the feel of Baldur's Gate except third person. 4 character party, pausable real-time combat, good questing system.
I have put a bunch of hours in so-far and am still enjoying it quite a bit.

One of the best parts it can be picked up for $29.99 at Best Buy and a few digital download locations.

There is a demo you can get from the company or Gamespot.

Definitely worth a look for anyone wanting an RPG fix.

While I won’t try and tell you this game serves as a replacement for Mass Effect or Fallout 3, it is pretty well done on the whole. I hope this means Radon Labs will be working on further RPGs, as Drakensang is a series with great potential.
Thats a nice quote from Metacritic. Might be worth checking out

This is worth the download if you enjoy games like Oblivion.

It's more hardcore D&D though with lots of stats. Combat is a mix between turn based and real time. In a nod to old school games, I lost about 30 minutes of game time because I didn't save soon enough.

I'd say it's more of a mix between Oblivion and Dungeon Siege. It looks a hell of a lot better than Oblivion (the environment and UI). There's a lot of questing although, like WoW players I suppose, I don't care a whole lot about my quests yet and just do them. There's 15-20 classes to choose from with only the dwarfs being male only and a female only amazon class.

The spell effects are nice. I can't comment on system requirements but my new PC cut through this game with ease.

You pick up team members pretty fast and it's pretty easy to control them all. Entering combat, the game pauses so you can determine what you're going to case or do, and then you can pause at any time to switch characters. While it's real time combat, it's turn based.

The character building/stats looks pretty deep and with 15-10 character types, it should have some re playability. It's well polished, especially the UI although I wish holding down both mouse buttons would move your character, instead of just WASD or click to spot movement. The story is average but at least well done. Don't expect anything spectacular but it's a good one for those looking for a fantasy RPG.

Without the high-res texture pack this runs acceptably on an Athlon XP 3200+ with 2g RAM and a Radeon 9800Pro.
Ghetto machine FTW.

Drakensang, a third-person party-based RPG based on the rules of Germany's most successful and popular role-play system, The Dark Eye, is now available on Steam.

Here's the manual for anyone that wants to see if it looks appealing.

Drakensang Manual 3.5mb

This is old school D&D type game but stats are based off German RPG as mentioned above so it takes some getting used to.
