This is why we end up with complete GOP control after every period where liberals have power.H.R. 40:
111st CongressThis is a bill in the U.S. Congress originating in the House of Representatives ("H.R."). A bill must be passed by both the House and Senate and then be signed by the President before it becomes law.
Bill numbers restart from 1 every two years. Each two-year cycle is called a session of Congress. This bill was created in the 111st Congress, in 2009-2010.
The titles of bills are written by the bill's sponsor and are a part of the legislation itself. GovTrack does not editorialize bill summaries.
2009-2010 Commission to Study Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act
To acknowledge the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the 13 American colonies between 1619 and 1865 and to establish a commission to examine the institution of slavery, subsequently de jure and de facto racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans, and the impact of these forces on living African-Americans, to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies, and for other purposes.

Reparations are a retarded idea. Then again, you are a retarded person.

Well it is probably a good thing that this is happening now so it can get promptly shot down. At least I hope it does. I find this as frivolous many of the lawsuits that you read about. Which means a waste of time and a cost that is passed on to the tax payers.

Is this what killed the controlling party's majority when it was introduced as HR 110-40, 109-40, 108-40, 107-40, 106-40, 105-40? Did you figure out the theme? (hint: it has something to do with land and mules)
Here's a news flash. This bill has been introduced in every session congress since 1989, and guess what? It never goes anywhere, and it doesn't even cost the people that introduce it since their constituents approve of it!! Go be a reactionary douchebag somewhere else.

Out of curiosity, how do you feel about Republican representatives wasting time and resources on pushing the Cult of Ronnie (HR 111-131)? I wonder if there might be some 1st Amendment establishment clause issues here...

Re: Are you fucking serious?
Reperations are stupid. Most intelligent educated black people I know agree with this, as well. The measures are being submitted repeatedly for the same reason that GOPers keep attacking teh gayz; stir up the base. Its complete bullshit. We are not the fucking Klingon Empire, where the sins of the father become that of the son. The current black population of the US were not personally beaten and raped by the current white population. It happened centuries ago. Get over it. In fact, given what black people did to the music scene with Disco and Rap, lets just call it even.
Reagan worship is stupid AND creepy. Consider also that when these assclowns found out Jefferson had some zebra babies, they pushed to replace him with Ronny on Mt Rushmore. I know the Mighty Righties love Reagan (he did hate the gays and an anyone with darker skin than himself, plus he wasn't exactly big on gender equity either), but I find this whole deification thing really disturbing and living in Orange County, I see a lot of it. This guy was hardly Jesus. Hell, he started his political career by tossing his work rivals under the bus to the McCarthy Commission.
So I guess the question here is what is more ludicrous?
Black people demanding money because some honkey's great great grandpa whipped their great great grandpa?
-OR-
A bunch of honkeys wanting statues and centenial celebrations established to enshrine their beloved homophobic, nativist, sexist, alzheimers second comming of Jeebus?
My vote is none of the above. I am going with bailing out rich bankers who fucked the entire country (maybe world) and paying their bonuses as the most ludicrous thing.

War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.

Immigration has absolutely nothing to do with race. I am commenting on felons entering the US illegally and taking money out of our economy while not even paying taxes. Those immigrants come in all flavors...white, hispanic, black, and asian. Re: Are you fucking serious?
I have a question for those who disagree with reparations, which appears to be everybody but me.
First, a definition: By "reparations," I mean something like "spending with the specific aim of benefiting African-Americans who are disadvantaged by the legacy of slavery." This doesn't mean cutting a check to every black person in the country (although I suppose that's a possibility), it could mean investing in the development of impoverished black communities-- improving the schools and social services in those communities and so forth.
Second, two assumptions:
1. African-Americans today, as a group, are severely disadvantaged due to the legacy of slavery and racism.
2. White Americans today, as a group, receive substantial advantages and privileges by virtue of being white and the legacy of past racial oppression by whites toward blacks.
The question: If you grant those assumptions, and work with my definition of reparations: Are you for reparations? If not, why not?

Re: Are you fucking serious?
Spang said it first. Why are African-Americans being given this thought and the Native Americans not? The slaves were not murdered by the US government...or killed by bounties on them.
Re: Are you fucking serious?
I agree that the problems of Native Americans deserve attention too.
In my opinion, African-Americans and Native Americans have a somewhat distinct status from that of other minority groups in this country because of the fact that these two groups had no say in being here. Native Americans were already here before we came; African-Americans were brought here by force to be enslaved. However, there are big distinctions between the groups, and they deserve to be considered separately.
But: In this thread I'm talking about African-Americans. Talking about Native Americans is a non sequitor, unless you're trying to use a slippery slope argument that "once we give reparations to African-Americans, we'd have to give them to everybody!" If so, my counter is: No, we'd have to give them to African-Americans and Native Americans only, because those are the only groups that didn't come to America consensually.

Well, first of all, this isn't true-- thousands upon thousands of slaves were murdered by the U.S. government. Second, there's no point in comparing the two sorts of oppression-- is the genocide of Native Americans worse than the forced brutal enslavement of tens of millions of Africans? Who cares? What does that question even mean? They're both horrific.Kilmoll wrote:The slaves were not murdered by the US government...or killed by bounties on them.
Re: Are you fucking serious?
I'll go the Bart Simpson route and say "I didn't do it." Ask any Latino or Hispanic person about immigration. I guarantee it's all about race to them. Given our history as a nation of immigrants, I think it's a little hypocritical and benignly racist to build fences etc. That's me.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:Immigration has absolutely nothing to do with race. As far a reparations go, make sure to give it another name before you expect anyone to get behind legislation. There is no way any spending towards blacks will get approved as long as it is called "reparations." But it's disapproval will inspire the indignation of the typical NAACPers, which the media will love.

are you saying I am lying? I have a quite clearly laid genology tree that tracks back my fathers side to the 1700's and Cherokee tribes here. Another line of his family actually goes to Apache lines which is a hell of a lot harder to track.

Re: Are you fucking serious?
Ever notice how in these situations people's ancestors are never the dregs of a society, but always kings, queens, presidents, generals, duchesses or chiefs? People never want to talk about the great-great-great-great-great-grandmother who was a street whore in Boston, or her uncle the grave digger.
Good to see Kilmoll jumping in to take up Kylere's slack in the native ancestry fantasy department.

Dregs here! My last name could have come from any of several nationalities originally and I'm pretty sure my family roots stagnate in West Virginia coal mines. My dad's dad skipped town and abandoned my grandmother while he was a child, so my last name means jack and shit to me, but not enough to bother changing it. Hoping to redeem it.
Actually, as my only child is a daughter, it might die off entirely.

Most Native Americans around here look Caucasian, and I doubt that they face racial discrimination on a day-to-day basis due to their fraction of Native American blood. I'd bet that your average black man sees more blatant racism and oppression due to that lingering racism than your average Native American.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:About as much as the extent of oppression that the typical black man has experienced in my generation. Re: Are you fucking serious?
Do you want me to make up a dreg or do you want me to state a fact? You can Google Aaron Brock or Chief Redbird and see whatever history on him you want. My family still owns the land my great grandmother lived on (she being the most direct up the Cherokee line with my great grandfather having the Apache line) in Clay County Kentucky. Her property was on the river they named for him and was/is in the direct area. I know that Aaron's son also fought in the Revolutionary War on the side of the colonists, but I have to admit I don't know all that much about everyone in between. There could well have been some whores and hit-men in there....no clue. I do know one branch of that extends into Europe and that Chaucer is a direct ascendant in there....sorry that I actually have those bloodlines and I will try to find some clowns in there next time just to make you happy.Xatrei wrote:Ever notice how in these situations people's ancestors are never the dregs of a society, but always kings, queens, presidents, generals, duchesses or chiefs? People never want to talk about the great-great-great-great-great-grandmother who was a street whore in Boston, or her uncle the grave digger.
Good to see Kilmoll jumping in to take up Kylere's slack in the native ancestry fantasy department.

actually, native americans were rounded up and stuck on reservations where they are still located. When THAT happens to every African American, then you can come talk to me.Syenye wrote:Most Native Americans around here look Caucasian, and I doubt that they face racial discrimination on a day-to-day basis due to their fraction of Native American blood. Not every Native American lives on a reservation and carries a CDIB, which is kind of my point. It's harder to oppress a racial group when they're harder to identify.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:actually, native americans were rounded up and stuck on reservations where they are still located. No, actually what I said:Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:are you saying I am lying? I have a quite clearly laid genology tree that tracks back my fathers side to the 1700's and Cherokee tribes here. Another line of his family actually goes to Apache lines which is a hell of a lot harder to track.
I have no fucking idea how much you are or aren't, I just know that I've heard that line or similar a lot.Psyloche wrote:I can't count the number of times I've heard people say stuff like, "Oh my Dad is Irish and my mom is German, but we're also like 1/16 Cherokee Indian"
Edit: I also wanted to point out what Syenye eventually posted so there's no point in me reposting it.

African Americans were forcibly removed from Africa, brought to America, enslaved, and then, post-slavery, lynched, murdered, oppressed, and forced into poverty-stricken segregated neighborhoods, where they remain today.actually, native americans were rounded up and stuck on reservations where they are still located. The ones who remain stuck in those situations which we placed them in ought to be helped. Recent wealthy African immigrants and those who have integrated successfully into mainstream society don't need help.

Re: Are you fucking serious?
There are plenty of white people that are either lazy or came from circumstances that matched or even exceeded the africa-americans situations in the section 8 neighborhoods. I might even have agreed with you if we were referring to 30-40 years ago, but I have seen enough now to know that it is not just some mythical "whitey keeping a brother down" now. We have desegregated and the pure fact is that those who want to get educated DO get educated in our schools. That has not one damn thing to do with race now. If you want to talk about finding a way to break the thug culture that permeates inner cities (which is white, black, latino, and asian) then have at it....but don't you dare talk to me about how we need to target one fucking race and find some way to pay them back because of some shit that happened 150 years ago when there are plenty of injustices that happened to other races and continue happening today. You want some reparations....how about you are not being eaten by a fucking lion today while trying to drink zebra piss out of an elephant footprint? How about you are being given food by the taxpayers every single day that would equate to a week's worth of meals in Africa? I sure as fuck don;t see any malnutrition in any of the ghettos that I have been through....every damn lazy fuck in there is 250+ pounds. Being too cool to allow yourself to be educated is a YOU problem and not a taxpayer problem.Sueven wrote:African Americans were forcibly removed from Africa, brought to America, enslaved, and then, post-slavery, lynched, murdered, oppressed, and forced intoactually, native americans were rounded up and stuck on reservations where they are still located. Unhealthy foods are cheaper than healthy foods.
For the oppressed, peace is the absence of oppression, but for the oppressor, peace is the absence of resistance.
Re: Are you fucking serious?
Seriously, Kilmoll, if you honestly believe what you're saying, you have no concept of human nature/behaviour. It's not that they're incapable of succeeding. It's not that "the man" is keeping them down. It's simple... Most blacks living in impoverished neighborhoods are stuck in a cycle. They weren't taught self-worth, they weren't taught the importance of an education. It really is a psychological thing. People tend to mirror the behaviour of their society. If you weren't taught certain things or given certain things when you're a child, it becomes increasingly difficult as you grow older. No one is saying that *you* are personally responsible for their misfortunes but to say that slavery, repression and segregation have nothing to do with it is absolutely ludicrous.
What Sueven is saying makes complete sense and actually addresses your point that different cultures/races also suffer from some of the same problems. If reparations are paid through "investing in the development of impoverished black communities-- improving the schools and social services in those communities and so forth", everyone in said community will benefit, regardless of their race. It's my personal opinion that investing in impoverished neighborhoods would be a benefit to me as well as to the people living in them because I'm a firm believer that investing in schools and social programs can be a huge tool to help cut crime and get people off of taxpayer funded programs, etc. But I know that's a sentiment you'll never share.
