Anyone "jailbreak" their iPhone yet?

Post by Canelek »

A buddy of mine jailbreaked his and highly recommends. With the open source apps, you can do things like organize your apps into folders, change the default background and 'tether' your iPhone to your laptop for anytime internetzes.

I am contemplating giving it a try, since the settings, etc are saved when you sync to iTunes.

Several of us on VV jailbroke our iTouches. I found it less useful after the App Store was opened.

I'm staying away from messing with my iPhone. The number and diversity of apps (mostly free, or a couple dollars) available in the iTunes store is amazing.

If I knew how I'd consider it, but I don't know if I'd be denying myself future updates.

Here is how (this is email from my friend):

No brick worries. just back up phone beforehand. first time i installed, it hozed. had to restart my phone some funky way. then reloaded. everything perfect. S is fking badass!!!!

Follow this:

http://www.iphonehacks.com/2009/01/jail ... .html#more

The only thing you need to install is Cydia.

Launch Cydia.

Download the following:

intelliscreen (holy F'n crap! why this isn't included in the iphone OS is beyond me)
winterboard (finally change the background!...and so much more)
backgrounder (allows you to run apps in the background...chat client?...i recommend Fring on the appstore)
PDAnet (tether your laptop to your iphone...free internet wherever you go)
Categories (organize your zillions of apps)
SBSettings (hide unused icons. quick access to wifi/3g/gps controls)
BOSSprefs (similar to above...actually don't recall which I use)

DO IT!

mine is fully jailbreaked and I have it so I can ssh into it and almost use it as a storage device as well as a phone. I suggest going to http://www.modmyi.com and checking out their guides and forums. It's pretty crazy that you can customize anything about the phone

I used Quickpwn 2.2 to Jailbreak and Cydia to install apps. I like being able to organize into folders.

All right all right, I went ahead and jailbroke my iPhone....bastards!

It's worth it. very cool.

liking the cycorder and blacklists app so far and those are the only two I've tried. Using iPhonebroswer to transfer stuff to/from my PC.

Cydia is a nice improvement over the original installer app as well.

I like Cydia as well. I have yet to really delve into too much. I was just happy to be able to organize all my shit into folders. ;) I did download PDANet, but have yet to test it tethered with the laptop. All in all, it is nicer having a more versatile tool than what I got from the stock iPhone.

That vista theme is nice.

The vista theme is the last of the three themes shown below. You can see difference in folders and stuff between various themes (lots to choose from).

Image
Orginal Icons with diff font and background.

Image Image
A nice theme, iComplete

Image Image
Vista Theme

I have about 70 apps currently but they all fit on two pages using "Categories". You'll see Games/Media/News/Movies/Junk/Reference/Books....those are all folders with more stuffage in them.

Key apps like iStockMnger, Voice Dialer, Shazam (need to access fast to ID a song), Camcorder and advanced camera app Snapture, Yahoo client, BofA app, etc are not in folders because I use them so often.

Random App comments.

Categories (Jailbreak):

outstanding app. Having ability to use folders is huge organizational help.

dTunes (jailbreak):

is an app that accesses seekpod and downloads mp3s for free. It's a full blown music/video player with a torrent app built in to top it all off. Pretty cool. Pirate Bay is the torrent hub for it although i don't know why you'd want to download torrent for the most part. seekpod is good. dTunes has regular search and also has popular artists searching, making it easy to grabs mp3s. You can also download videos but again, dont know why you'd want to for the most part.

tuneWiki (jailbreak):

Another cool ap that lets you access your mp3s and have streaming lyrics played while listening. Can also browse by popular songs etc, can also use GPS capability of iPhone to see what other people are playing nearby or anywhere else. Very cool.

iBlacklist (jailbreak):

Full featured app to block calls and sms , etc. It's very nice but I only have a few annoying calls and have already created a silent mp3 ringtone and assigned it to three 800# calls I get on my phone which are annoying. Now I hear nothing. if you're in collections or something, using iBlacklist would be very helpful.

Hot or Not (iTunes store): free

Great app to pass time. basically, set the age range, gender etc of who you want to see/rate and the pictures flow and you assign 1-10. Mindless fun that you can do when have short time to kill. I suppose if you wanted to , you could send messages, etc.

Installer/Cydia (jail break):

Is like iTunes App store for jail broken phones. Amazingly well polished. I've been overwhelmed by the amount of stuff out there that's quality. Even the Installer App for the iPhone has been updated since i last saw it, making it very user frindly to add and remove non iTunes Store Apps.

Winterboard (jailbreak):

Successor to Springboard. Yet another highly polished app that allows you to mod your UI, adding themes etc.

Im sticking with Vista theme for now. There are many high quality full themes and partial themes for the iPhone. (if Jailbroken)

My iPhone has quickly become indispensable for me. I'm amazed daily by what both people developing apps for the iTunes store and those that have created jailbroken apps have done. I'm also highly impressed by how easy and painless it is to update apps in iTunes store with clear text telling what has been updated etc. Also very easy to do with with non iTunes Apps. The comic reader I bought form the iTunes store for 2.99 has been updated three times now with enhancements (some bug fixes but each update had major new features) My free trading app has also had a major update making it even more useful.

Games are also coming along. iShoot is a really fun tank battle game. Try the lite version for free. It's all I use as I dont have time to play anything more than a few minutes so dont need full version. Beer Pong is also a blast.

I replaced the mail app in the doc with my trading app since I use it so much. My mail stil there just not on dock. I have my gmail account setup to check al o my other accounts and then use it as my iPhone mail so I can easily access all my email accounts.

Jailbroken or not, the iPhone kicks ass. Both have Apps wich make up for Apple's shortcomings on the iPhone. The Camcorder and Camera apps for jailbroken ipHones are excellent and the voice dialer add ons etc in the iTunes store are a big help.

and AT&T kicks the shit out of Sprint for bill accuracy and ease of paying/checking on stuff. Can't believe I spent 11 years with Sprint.

Too bad the hardware sucks. Or so I've heard. The G1 is not up to snuff with an iPhone at the current time despite how awesomely awesome Google is. Hard to believe I know!

I have one and have used it quite extensively and I disagree with you, respectfully of course ;)

There are no issues with the hardware, in fact I have had no issues with the phone at all. I like having the fold out keyboard as opposed to only being able to use the on screen keyboard (which I don't like using). The buttons are small but I have fat fingers and after the first few days of use I no longer have any issues hitting buttons I didn't mean to hit.

There are tons of free programs/games out right now for a large variety of things.. There are a few things Google hasn't released the code for yet (like widgets) so people can't do everything with programs, but damn close. The plus side being that Google doesn't regulate what programs can be put out, so you can get programs to do whatever you want without having to hack the phone :)

I believe that Google has now given developers the go ahead to start charging for applications/games too, so the quality and quantity of what is on the Android marketplace has gone up.

I don't know if you have used the phone at all, but I wouldn't go off of reviews, and I wouldn't go off of using it for 5 minutes in the store either. For the first couple of days I had it I wasn't sure how I felt about it, and once I got used to where everything was and how it worked, I love the phone far more than any other phone I've ever owned or used.

Edit: The only thing I can think of that the iPhone has that the G1 does not is multi-touch, which is a completely useless gimmick anyhow!

Sorry for the derail.

EDITEDIT: I spoke too soon, shortly after making this post I got this in a email from a co worker:

multi touch support on G1

I'm not an Apple fanboi and will happily give an Android phone a look down the road. Right now, the iPhone has so much App support that other phones can't compete.

I fully expect later generations of Android phones to be worth a look. Not atm though. iPhone rocks. I learned long ago, you go where the software support is (Windows!)(except for WoW. WoW sucks (and the Wii))

I keep hearing that but do you know that for a fact? I honestly think people would be surprised to see whats on the android marketplace, and up to this point all applications are free. It's pretty bad ass, and its been improving noticeably every week.

All of my friends that have iPhones end up being jealous once they see the kinds of programs my phone has for free.

I think that just like the iPod, people just assume it's better cause it's more popular.

Sorry for the derail, you can split my posts off into a "The G1 eats pieces of shit like the iPhone for breakfast" thread if you see fit.[/img]

I took a look at the apps available on the G1:

http://androidcommunity.com/forums/androidmarket.php

It has potential but it's not exactly there yet from what I see. That doesn't come remotely close to the Apps available with the iPhone.

I'm not bashing it. If it matures and becomes as good as or better than the iPhone/Software, I'll switch.

Apple blows ass compared to Windows/PC but in the cell phone market, you want ease of use. At home, I'm not in grandma mode, but while driving or on a break or when needing quick info, etc, I want quantity combined with quality and ease of use (usability without customization). Apple/iTunes has it's shit together for podcasts and iPhone Apps. Most are free, and the few worth buying are priced cheap. That's not even counting the huge jailbreak community that pumps out installers an apps with high quality.

Android/G1 has potential. It's just a matter of time. I'll be keeping an eye on it. Will look again 6-12 months down the road. Right now, the iPhone covers both general user and hacker/tech users well. Whether you're wanting the basic or wanting to make a hobby out of it, the iPhone is currently kicking ass.

We'll agree to disagree then :) I can't think of much program wise that I can't do with my phone that I could see as useful. But then again I have zero interest in my phone also being my mp3 player until I can have a phone with 160GB of storage for the price of one device.

That and I can't see why you would want to support a OS that strongly restricts what you can do with it, and hack it effectively voiding your warranty in the process, when you could use one that openly welcomes any program anyone could make. If you want a program to do something on the phone, someone is probably making a program to do it :)

Being as android has only been a few months, i'd say apple has something to worry about.

I would personally much rather support a OS that encourages users to be creative and does not focus on charging than use the mainstream OS that is very restrictive and nickel and dimes you for everything!

I'm done now, carry on :)

I haven't Jailbroken (?) my iPhone. The only reason I would do it is to tether to my laptop, and I've heard rumors that AT&T monitors for that sort of activity. Have you guys been tethering with the iPhone, and if so, have you had any problems?

Pretty cool Clatis. I like the design of the icons as well.

I've seems some amazing themes here for the iPhone:

All the forums are good there at modmyi which you first referenced earlier in this thread.

After farting around with themes the entire day, I decided to use the standard one with a black background. The Snow Leopard theme has some outstanding icons but now that I know how to individually edit app icons to switch them out, I may just pick and choose a few if I want to change them.

I did however download the vWallpaper app and have a video of Jessica Alba doing her Sin City dance in the background behind my app icons but I won't have hat on all the time.

NM, I found the icons. There's a post on Modmyi for a collection of icons called "Realize Everthing". I had installed a Vista theme, but didn't like a lot of the icons.

It just wouldn't be right without talking about getting all the pay iTunes Apps for free here.

This nerd (fellow enthusiast) does a pretty bad job of explaning how to mod a few things on your iphone to to be able to click an drag .ipa App files to your iTunes and have them work/sync'd to your iPhone/Touch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvMq9CfVQPs

he's actually pretty annoying and not clear but you'll figure it out hopefully without toasting your phone.

You just need to know how to SSH into your iPhone in order to swap out a file.

Basic steps:

1. SSH into your iPhone and delete MobileInstallation file and replace it with the one the guy has linked to the right of the YouTube video in his description of the video.

2. download a free app from the iTunes store to (that resets something)

3. download .ipa files wherever you can find them (the newsgroups have bazillions of them) and simply drag them into your Applications folder in iTumes and you can then sync them with your iPhone.

alt.binaries.warez.smartphone

is the newsgroup to get the .ipa apps. you can find them elsewhere and there's even a way to do all this just using your iPhone but I found the app unstable and most ipa files removed by rapidshare, etc.

alt.binaries.warez.smartphone has a 580 mega pack of iTunes apps posted along with a couple 100+ .ipa floods. There's also weekly updates where someone posts all the lastest App releases to the newsgroup.

I downloaded around 200-300 .ipa files but have only tried a few so far. I tried Jaadu/RDP which rocks. It's a native Remote Desktop Protocol iPhone app (not VNC of which there are a lot available). It was a snap to remote connect to my PC and access everything on my iPhone. The controls are well done as well as making good use of the iPhones multitouch capabilities.

I also downloaded the full version of Orb which is basically a Video/Audio streaming app for the iPhone. I can access and stream any movie or MP3 to my iPhone now with ease and a well done UI. I could also stream live TV if I had a TV card for my PC. Works well over 3G.

I'll probably check out some of the games. I've been looking through the pay apps on iTunes and nothing gets me too excited yet. All cool and nothing I'd want to pay for. I've already paid for the ones I wanted like AirMouse, Comic reader app and a couple others. Some of the expensive medical reference guides might be cool to have for kicks. dunno.

Point is, you can get any or the iTunes apps pretty easy with a jailbroken iPhone for testing purposes or to compare a few similar apps before deciding on which one to buy.

For anyone that did the above, here's a nice site that posts latest IPA apps.

http://iphoneipa.net/

He posts quite a few, has some pictures, and a few vids which help. The blog style postings go back quite a ways. With all the apps released for the iPhone lately, it's kinda nice to see a few releases in an easy to ready posted style for consideration.

This is the place to get .ipa apps for your iPhone if it's hacked (jailbroken+hacked)

http://appulo.us/appdb/

Seems to be like 60+ new apps every day there. The links don't last too long except for the endlessapps.net sources.

Also, alt.binaries.warez.smartphone

is still pumping out ipa app collections. Yesterday 253 apps were posted that accumulated the apps and updates released from Aug 1 - Aug 9 on iTunes.

I was content with waiting for HTC Touch HD's successor to come to the US, but it's been 6 months and there's not even a rumor floating around yet as to a name, much less a release date. If that wasn't enough, my wife is seriously wanting to upgrade her phone and I'm afraid she may come home with an impulse buy that is less than great :P

Best Buy is having a sale this week for Silver Club Members. I can get a new 16G iPhone for $199.00. On top of that, I get a 24% discount from my employer for using AT&T. That means our iPhones and plans will be 10$ cheaper than what we have right now. I'm going to bite the bullet later this week and upgrade our 3 year old phones and tell Sprint that they can fuck right off.

"Do you want the extended service plan?"

"No thanks, it will be voided tonight when I go home and jailbreak this thing!"

Just remember not to upgrade to 2.2.1

The phone will probably have 2.2 on it which is good for breaking.

I've decided not to jailbreak mine... unless someone can give me a good reason to. I don't mind paying for the apps, and the only reason I originally wanted to (tethering) is something that I can live without because it's an excuse not to work.

My total deal was:

2 new 16G iPhones, 2 screen protectors and 2 car chargers all for $460.00. In top of that, I had 30$ in Best Buy points so I paid $430 out of pocket. This will be split in half since my wife insists on paying for her half.

I then get 24% savings off my monthly plan (we took the 700 minute shared deal).

I'm really, really loving this thing so far. I'm going to get good and used to it before I jailbreak it so i know exactely what I want to change or add.

I finally updated my jailbroken 2.2iPhone to 2.2.1

Enough apps were being written and updated to only work on 2.2.1 that I felt it was time. I wan concerned about upgrading because I'd lose all my apps but but it turns out all my preferences were saved and a good chunk of my hacked apps (all cydia apps had to be reinstalled.

I considered trying out the 3.0 OS but don't think I will even if I get one of the developers to add me to their list so I can activate 3.0.

OS 3.0 is already jailbroken but won't be available until 3.0 is officially released:

It almost goes without saying, but we will say it anyway :)

With all of the great stuff lined up for us with the 3.0 OS that Apple described today, many 3G owners may find themselves with itchy update fingers. If you find yourself with access to the 3G IPSW for 3.0 via the iPhone Dev Center program, and you are using yellowsn0w, do not update or restore to that official IPSW. You will lose yellowsn0w and find yourself unable to revert the baseband to get it back.

And for those wondering, yes the 3.0 OS is jailbreakable on all devices. It’s just those using 3G yellowsn0w that have to show some restraint and wait for PwnageTool to create a custom IPSW that avoids the baseband update.

To ugrade from jailbroken 2.2 to 2.2.1

Upgrade to 2.2.1 through iTunes like normal (no need to restore iPhone first) and then use QuickPwn 2.2.5 to rebreak the 2.2.1 OS. Use Cydia to reinstall any Cydia apps. Your regular apps, and most of your hacked ones if you do hack, will be there with preferences even.

If you do mess around with hacked ipa apps, be sure to re-add the MobileInstallation file and you're set.

I just jailbroke my iPhone 3G with 3.0

The Pwnage software was only released for the Mac so far but if you already have a jailbroken 2.2.1 3G, and haven't upgrade to the standard 3.0 via iTunes, you can download a custom restore firmware and SHIFT+Restore in iTunes 8.2 to go from 2.2.1(or 2.2.2) to 3.0.

Make sure you backup beforehand so you can reinstall all of your legitimate apps, contacts, photos, etc (hacked apps can't be sync'd through iTunes yet)

While you can't use hacked .ipa apps via iTunes, you can still install them using Installulous directly to your iPhone until they come up with a patch for the miPatch
You can install your cracked apps through Installous -- just upload them via SFTP to /var/mobile/Library/Downloads and run Installous. It's just iTunes syncing that requires miPatch.

Here's link to torrent with jailbroken restore firmware: (read below before doing anything)

http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/1965353/16005405/
Applications : Iphone / Ipod touch : English
This is the 3.0 Firmware for the iPhone 3G that has already been Pwned. It includes Cydia and Icy.

-It is NOT Hacktivated, I have an ATT Contract so this was not needed.
-500mb Default Partition Size
-Default PwnageTool Bootlogo (Pineapple)
-YouTube WORKS

Installation Instructions
Make sure you have iTunes 8.2 Installed.

PUT PHONE IN DFU MODE!
Step 1. Turn off your iPhone.

Step 2. Hold down the power and home button for 10 seconds.

Step 3. Release the power button but continue holding the home button down for 10 seconds.

Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that its in restore mode.

Mac Users: Hold your "Option" Key and click Restore. Navigate to where you saved this custom ipsw file.

Windows Users: Hold your "Shift" Key and click Restore. Navigate to where you saved this custom ipsw file.

I didn't do step 1 through 4 so not sure what he's talking about there. I just loaded iTunes 8.2, plugged in my iPhone , went to iPhone screen in iTunes and held down SHIFT before pressing "Restore", which allows you to choose the file you wish to restore from.

This particular custom jailbreak firmware is if (and only if) :

-You are AT&T legitimate customer (won't unlock phone)
-Your iPhone is currently already pwnd and you're using 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 (meaning you haven't downloaded 3.0 from iTunes)

Cydia and Icy come preinstalled so your good to go with getting Installulous back on your phone so you can copy over cracked apps until the miPatch is in place for iTunes.

All my contacts, photos, etc were restored so that went well. I haven't worked on sFTPing over cracked apps yet

----

This method is only if you have the right iphone (3G, pwned with 2.2.1/2) and don't want to wait for QuickPwn for Windows.

-----

Update:

Cracked apps work fine. Make sure you installl OpenSSH (located in Cydia) so you can sFTP to your iPhone in order to copy the .ipa cracked apps to:

/var/mobile/Library/Downloads

before using Installulous

Add resource:

http://cydia.hackulo.us

to Cydia in order to be able to install Installuous

update to above post:

well, that didn't take long, there's a patch for cracked app syncing with iTunes. It's no longer an miPatch, is binary replacement.

I can confirm that this works:
For all you people who want a MI patch, well this is the way to do it now:

Install it to root/usr/libexec/installd & set permissions to 0755

http://www.mediafire.com/?mm5t1ttuiwm

As usual, don't forget to create:

/Applications/Documents and /var/mobile/Documents

I set all perms to 777 though.

As I was patching, the Appulous guys added something called "AppSync" to their Cydia resouces so you cn do it that way now I think.

here's the thread:

http://hackulo.us/forums/index.php?showtopic=28842

---

Havent screwed around with 3.0 much a all but did use copy/paste function to respond to an SMS message. Pretty slick!

What do I use if mine was already jail broken? But I never upgraded to 2.2.1, I'm running 2.2.0.
