Computer died

So, my computer went kaput on me. Hoping someone can help me diagnose it.

It started with my USB mouse and my sound card both disabling themselves. The sound cards a Creative X-Fi. Unplugging and replugging the mouse fixed it, but the sound was still out. So I turned off my machine, then it wouldn't properly power up. It would start, but wouldn't get to any of the startup text on the screen or anything. Oddly enough, unplugging my headphones/mic finally let me turn it back on properly, although I think that's probably just a coincidence. Unfortunately it would keep having the mouse/sound disable after a bit and I'd have to restart. I just said screw it, turned it off, and went to bed.

Next day I tried to power on my computer and nothing. It wouldn't even attempt to power on at all. The green LED on the motherboard was lit up, but no one was home. I figured it was the power supply, since in my mind that might explain the piecemeal failure of components. I went and got a new power supply (up to 650w from 500w), got it all installed. Green LED was on. Powering up led to nothing. Again.

So now I'm trying to get some help from you guys. I know a few of you are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to computers. I've tried unplugging everything except the motherboard, no help. I've checked to make sure all the plugs are secure and everything is seated, nadda. Anything else I can do short of taking it into the shop? I think it's still under warranty, it was a refurbished machine, but I've only had it a year.

sounds like mobo since you've ruled out the power supply. unless that PSU is also bad!

do any fans spin up, or start to?

you can also try reseating everything even though you already checked it.. but thats pretty unlikely to be the cause

No fans start at all. I'll try reseating everything again, but yeah.. guessing that won't be any use. I think it's still under warranty at least, but.. meh.

I figure foot traffic in that forum is substantially less than this one. And I couldn't really care less!

Sounds like motherboard. I am going through a similar situation where my board is about to die.... RAID thing. Good times!

I'm assuming nothing means you push the button and absolutely nothing happens - so no beep, no fans on CPU?
Just want to clarify that.

If its still under warranty, easy call...if its not under warranty, easy call...just get a new mobo. You did everything right to verify the power supply, you tried powering it up with only the HDD plugged into the mobo and all other things unhooked, right? well, you got your answer I think. Sorry dude

Although, it is a JOLLY time of tech to be upgrading

Actually, it was the power supply. Returned the new power supply, got a new motherboard, installed it with the old power supply, and smoke started rising from my HD and DVD drive. New mobo is toast, along with the drives. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I know it's not going to help, but if it makes you feel any better. It was both.

The PSU was bad, which had tossed your mobo. Which is why when you tested new PSU you got same response.

If you had started this thread in the proper forum, you would have gotten the answers you needed, and this sort of thing wouldn't have happened. Let this be a lesson for everyone!

Yep. If I'd only kept the new power supply! Teaches me for trying to save a buck. And damn Christmas for messing with the store hours!
