1 foot of snow

Post by Bubba Grizz »

I am not normally a snow loving person but that was before I got my snow blower. Now I look forward to actually having to go out and clear the driveway. Tonight and into tomorrow we are supposed to get between 8"-12" of snow. That should allow me to make good use of my snow blower. For the price I paid for the thing I hope it snows enough to make it worth it. The first year I had it the snowfall was scarce. Over the past two years I used it about 5 times each year. This year I have already used it 4 times and it looks to be a promising snowy winter. Yay.

I remember the first time my dad let me use our snow blower when we still lived in Nebraska. It was fun the first couple of times hah. Down here I have to mow the lawn March through December (now two lawns since I started mowing my parent's house for them). I can't decide which task I dislike more.

I took possession of my new house last Tuesday, though the furnace and water system were broken so I didn't move in until Saturday. From Tues. - Fri. I had workmen coming over, who all drove up and down my driveway that was covered in about 4-6" of snow. When I went out to shovel it this weekend that was a real treat. I spent a total of about 4 hours shoveling and trying to chisel 3/4" of ice off the whole goddamn thing, and there's still a good amount left.

I'd much rather mow grass.

I'm allergic to grass, and we have to mow damn near year round here.

I'd much rather shovel snow.

I'd much rather pay to have somebody shovel my snow and/or mow my grass.

Snow hasn't been an issue for me since we moved down here many years ago, but I used to pay to have my lawn mowed until 2002. In 2000, we moved into a townhouse and our lawn was literally two patches of grass that combined to maybe 300 square feet. After a couple of years there, I got sick of paying someone $120 a month to do what I could do in about 10 minutes (or less) once a week. Now that we have a much larger yard, it would cost me at least $160 a month, but it's still something I can do in about 45 minutes once a week. I'd rather spend that 160 on something else.

My neighbor has a relative who owns a plow. I just let him do my drive for 10$ a pop. It's a circle drive, so it's a little tricky for a plow to get it all. I always have to clean it up a bit, but it's so worth 10$.

I pay my little brother 10$ to mow my lawn. My lawn is a fucking bitch. You would have to see it to understand, but just let me say "HILLS". There are several of them. They are small, but steep. My back yard has an upper level where you have to carry the mower up about 10 steps. It sucks cock. I've burn myself on that damn mower more times than I care to count because I'm inpatient and don't wait for it to cool down first :P

Now let's talk leaves. I have more goddamn leaves than all of your houses combined and multiplied by 5. My house sits back about 30 yards from the street and is enveloped by 70 ft trees. My house is tucked under those bad boys, almost hidden away. During the peak of summer, you cannot see a single ray of sunlight in my front yard! Try as I may, I never get them all before the snow falls. So, when spring rolls around, I pay a guy 400$ just to clean up my front lawn. Last year, it took him and 2 other guys almost 4 hours to do the job, and they had professional equipment. It's the best 400$ I've ever spent, since it takes my ass, like, 3 days to do it and it doesn't look as good :P

When I look up my address on Google Earth, I only see trees. Trees on top of trees. Someone in New York would probably pay a billion dollars for my view, but that's cold comfort when I'm out there raking for a month!

Well yesterdays storm was really weak. We got like 4" over night and then maybe another 3" over the course of the day. Very easy to keep up with in terms of removal and the local plows did a great job keeping the roads clean. I worked from home anyhow just cause I could.

Raking leaves just out right pisses me off. Being a fat man with normal fat man issues, my back doesn't do well with raking. So I bought myself a leaf blower and I have a much more enjoyable time moving leaves into a pile and pissing off my neighbors at the same time due to the noise. Get all the leaves up on a tarp and drag them to the front for the village to come pick up.

That is something I never saw before I moved to Green Bay. The village comes by with these huge trucks with a monsterous vacuum hose on it and sucks up all your leaves. You just need to get them to the front of your house. Very nice.

Slightly unrelated.

I got out my snowboard a few days ago and went to Mt. Holly (400 ft vert) for my first run of the year. I broke my nose on the first run of the day.

It hurts.
