And is one of the youngest and most talented basketball players ever. He's worth every penny the Lakers are giving him AND he attracts fans. And the *athlete* thing, what's up with that? You don't think these guys are talented? Could you last one college football/basketball/wrestling practice? I highly doubt it. You do realize the flow of money these *athletes* generate I hope. I think you need to get your facts straight Drewno before you criticize not only him, but the *athletes* you speak of.

As long as the players realize how lucky they are to be making millions of dollars playing a game, good for them. It's the assholes that think they're doing society some great service and are owed more than the millions they already make that really irk me.

have you seen what a ticket costs lately?Canelek wrote:Actually, Kobe is a good kid. Sure, he makes the cash, but he is worth every penny. REMEMBER: Revenue = Players make more money. The more money the game makes, the more money players make. same is true for every pro sport.
I took my friend's kid to a Sonics game last year and it cost me a fucking fortune for 2 tickets and some souveniers.
A family used to be able to go check out a game for a reasonable price. Now you have to remortgage your fucking house to take them all out.
Sure there's still a market for it, but a team's avid fans shouldn't be paying out the ass to go and see a game.
What really fucking reams me is players asking for money for autographs, simply because its worth something on the open market in one of those filthy sports memorabelia stores. Hi I get paid $10 million a year to hit a ball with a stick and I charge 12 year olds who worship me forty bucks to sign my name on a baseball card.

It is pathetic what the average basketball player makes as opposed to the average working man. And the fuckers go on strike? Bite me.
Pro Sports salaries are a joke. The players demanding more to the point where it's not even viable at times to run a club is disgusting. Ticket prices are completely sickening.
WAH WAH I need 1 million more so give me 5 million instead of 4 million to shoot a ball at a hoop, or a puck at a net.
Pro Sport Athletes need a serious reality check. Yes they were screwed in the past with being seriously under paid compared to what owners made, but now the tables have done a complete about face in some of the leagues, though I believe the NFL has done the best at keeping salaries in check and provided descent revenue sharing.
I'm a huge hockey fan, but I won't cry if they strike in 2004 to get the Hockey salaries straightend out. I'm sorry but paying hockey players over 8 million a year is just plain wrong.
And yes I'm jealous of their salaries, I want to make millions a year playing a game, weeee!

Hockey, baseball, and basketball generate more revenue then football simply because of the number of games they play each year. It really bugs me that a baseball player can make more than 5 mil a year to stand in the fucking sun and chew gum, where football players put blood and sweat and their physical health on the line every sunday, and make a lot lot less.
I never respected baseball as a sport. Hockey and basketball at least ask for some physical endurance, i.e. you can't have a beer-gut and a high cholesterol problem if you're playing these sports.
I do agree that it is sad that our entertainers make more money then our teachers and soldiers and a variety of other undervalued professions.

I'd rather the money go to the players' pockets than the owners'. Having said that, ticket and concession prices are a joke. I go to a Ranger game about once a month and it's ridiculous. $3.75 for a hotdog?
In addition, if I'm not comp'd board seats, the concession people get in the way. I mean they parade around getting in front of the action the ENTIRE fucking game. Probably my biggest peeve at arena sports. Disgusting

So Kobe makes about 12 million a year.
He plays, on average, 63 games a year.
He plays, on average, 35 minutes per game.
His career average is 20 points per game.
Half of those games are home games.
So for each home game he makes roughly 400 thousand dollars.
For each minute he is on the floor at home he makes over $11 thousand dollars.
Almost $200 per second
He makes 40 thousand dollars per basket.
He also makes over 10 million per year in endorsements.
**edit**
The LA Lakers make no revenue when the team plays 'away' games... the numbers could be skewed even further.

I got to go to the Lightning/Red Wings game last night for free. The face value of the tickets was $65 though, which is pretty steep. They were great seats, though. Good thing I don't live in Detroit or I probably would refinance my house so I could have season tickets.

Don't pay the players so much, and then they can turn around and invest the money back into the ticket cost so the fans don't have to pay an arm and a leg! Sounds good to me, anyway. I'd go to way more games (read: spend more money) if it didn't cost an average of $150 for good seats to a game. Hell, I'd get season tickets to the Bucs and I'm a Packer fan.. but I love going to games, just can't afford it currently.Gordiken the Wicked wrote:What else to do with the hundreds of millions that is generated to pro sports? I get free Leafs tickets from time to time.
Hockey is a HUGE draw here in Toronto.
I've seen tickets scalp for over $400 per seat for a normal season game.
Even back in the 80s when the Leafs were embarrasing and playing in a 60 year old building, virtually every game was a sellout.

they may "lose" money on a year to year basis in one manner of calculating things, but when it comes time to sell, they get to write off a lot of those losses, and tend to turn a handsome profit. that is why you see teams turn over in ownership at 5 to 7 year intervals from time to time.

Saying that a professional athlete shouldn't make more than your average working Joe doesn't really work. These guys have the skills to do something that most people in the world couldn't do. Them making more money is probably similar to the reason that a doctor makes more money than a truck driver. You'll find a lot more people qualified to be a truck driver than you will a doctor.
That said, ticket prices are insane.
That said, ticket prices are insane.
My dad has Wings tickets and face value for regular season games is somewhere in the $75-80 range. I was lucky enough to go to the final game at the Joe last year when they won the cup and the face value on that ticket was $300. It's insane... I make pretty decent money and I always wonder how half the people in there can afford to come to games. I could hardly afford it if my old man didn't give me free tickets.Xouqoa wrote:I got to go to the Lightning/Red Wings game last night for free. HI, we live in a capitalist society. Thats why it costs so much and thats why they make so much. If they are raking in billions for pro sports, why lower the price? Its ALL about the money for them(the owners of NBA, the shoe companies, coke companies, car companies, tv stations, goes on and on and on...) and they can dish out more money to the players because if the players leave the game then the owners dont make as much cash.
Its fucking sick, dont get me wrong, but as long as millions of people are watching the games and buying the products, then they will always be raking in gazillions.

Thats the thing. We as fans(consumers) agree to go to the game and pay the $50-$500 to get in the door, the $7 hotdog and beer prices, the parking fees and everything else. If we stop going, then the prices will fall and until we (as fans/consumers) learn that lesson they won't.Its fucking sick, dont get me wrong, but as long as millions of people are watching the games and buying the products, then they will always be raking in gazillions.
Unfortunately in some cases it probably means some franchises would fail, because they are already out on the competitive limb paying their players, coaches, etc these kinds of salaries, and how often have you heard of a player agreeing to ignore a contract that didn't favour them?

To the jealous bitches saying shit about Kobe:
Don't hate the player, hate the game.
You know damn well that if you were offered that much money to play basketball, you'd be out there doing it too. Don't even try to say you wouldn't.
To those whining about ticket prices and salaries, let me drop some science. If you're selling something, be it a ticket, your skills, or a fucking bag of popcorn, and you're not selling it or negotiating to sell it for the most money you can possibly get, you're a fucking idiot. What that means is, if the tickets, etc. are priced too high, people will stop coming to the games, and the ticket prices will be lowered. As long as you have the correct number of consumers willing to pay X, you're stupid to drop your price any lower than X.
Peace.

Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
The players don't get paid by ticket sales. It's crazy to be bitter about the large
salaries when it’s all basically coming from TV contracts and team licensing. Why should the
owners be the only ones with the large yearly salaries when it's the players that everyone wants to see.
As long as the TV money is coming in, the players are going to be paid mass amounts of money
And more power to them for it.

I never said they should. All I did was explain the basics of a free market economy. A lot of people like to talk about how much things are worth. Things are worth what someone is willing to pay. Well, I think the time has come, at least in MLB where they realize they salary structure is getting out of hand. After the A-Rod signing a couple seasons ago it looked like Baseball was in for some dark days.
The owners it seems have realized which direction that the market was heading in, and are starting to not over spend for any run of the mill player, and people who were once getting crazy contracts will probably have to settle for a more reasonable wage. I personally think NBA is the most overpriced of the major sporting leagues. When they went on strike I was a little disgusted, so chose to stop watching them. I'm sure they are still all broken up over that =P

Well I don't think its really the basics of the free market economy. Things are often worth less or more than what the market is willing to pay. Also, lots of pro sports are careening towards bankruptcy and reduced attendence because people are starting to not pay the price. Even successful teams are suffering, and even huge city teams in New York and LA are starting to feel the burn on high priced atheletes. Eventually its going to end up in disaster for the game.
Sometimes what people pay for things is not neccesarily fair. Lots of people bitch that Sony is making money hand over fist with EQ but cutting costs in areas like CS and content updates. I don't see anyone quitting over it. Hell Sony could probably raise the subscription to EQ to $50 a month and wouldn't lose half their clientele. This doesn't make it a fair price, and certainly wouldn't be very effective for user retention, and they would probably suffer for it in the long run.

When determining price, you need to forget about 'fair' imho.
Fair, is whatever the market will bear. If a merchant charges too much for a good or service, he goes out of business. It's exactly as you stated. The teams are starting to feel the burn. The 'Invisible Hand' will push the prices back down to sell more units. It's all about the law of supply and demand.

I believe the number of profitable baseball teams last year was 5. That number does not include the teams owend buy outside entities to act as tax shelters (read the Dodgers and one or two others).
Atheltes salaries are out of whack. Name me any athlete you'd put in the whitehouse for 4 years. They'd laugh at the salary that comes with that job.
And yes Patrick Ewing was the guy that turned me off to all pro sports with that statement.
College ball, espically basketball cost $4-6 bucks here to see competetive games. I don't care if its the best collection of athletes, as long as the game is entertaining.

if companies make money the employees of that company who are chiefly responsible for that financial success deserve compensation.
in the case of professional sports, that is the atheletes. they are more than just workers, they are the product as well. if the NBA makes billions (and it does) there is no reason the people responsible for that financial success shouldnt make millions.
sure Ewing said something stupid in the press. i've never seen a person who bore a greater resemblance to a neanderthal in my life....besides Kevin McHale maybe.

Baseball and basketball are both choking on the mutual greed of the talent and the owners. The owners cry poor because they aren't raking in the same % of the revenue, while the players keep trying for a bigger contract than the last guy. It is a fact that 4 NBA teams lost money in each of the past 3 seasons.
The main difference between football and the other leagues is that football has a comissioner whose job is to protect the game from the greedy fucks. Back in the '80's when the player's union was feeling their oats, they went on strike. Rather than buckle to their demands, the NFL took the long view: in 3 years, through the draft, all the teams will restock with talent; in the present, lets get guys who really want to play. That strike didn't last the season.

which is also why NFL player contracts suck.
they have no guaranteed money. in a job where injury is extremely common, if they are injured and they cannot play the following year, they get paid exactly $0. that is pretty sad in my opinion. these guys litterally sacrifice their bodies, and have no assurances even for a pro-rated portion of their salary. if i was hurt at my job (and i sit at a desk all day), i'd be compensated even if i couldnt work there anymore.
