Big, big news. The pilot has been ordered by HBO, so it's going to go into production. If HBO likes what they see in the pilot, the show will be picked up for a season.
Good Lord, I cannot wait to see this on the air. I'm praying to the gods of the Home Box Office that they will agree to pick it up. Even if I only get one season, that'll be worth it.

Awesome! Hopefully, HBO will not go all Deadwood and Carnivale due to the likely high production costs.

Yeah, that is my fear. Rome would have been an amazing three-four season show. There was so much they could done post-Caesar that would have kept them going, but because of high costs, it just wasn't feasible. This is also my fear with ASOIAF. Still, one glance of the Wall will be all I need to be content with whatever they do.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire---HBO
Ironically, the second season of Rome didn't cost much at all to produce. Most the cost went into the set production. However, they already ordered the cancel before season 2 was underway.

Well, at least they wrapped Rome up since they knew it was going to be the last season. Deadwood and Carnivale ended with anticipation of sunsequent seasons. =/ They actually could have ended Carnivale by chopping off the last few minutes.... bastardos!

I think that fans of the series are going to be too critical of any onscreen adaptation of the series.
If Martin is going to be writing the sceenplays, are we going to see one episode every 6-8 weeks.

The fans are very much behind it, at least the ones that post with any regularity on Westeros.org

That's the forum link to discussion about the series. As far as Martin writing, he is taking a consultant role only. He will not be writing any episodes, except for perhaps one a season. He was once a television writer in the 80s and early 90s, so he's familiar with the format.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire---HBO
The real question is, will it be good enough to pull in the people that have no clue what it is based on?
