You realize that he gets big numbers from just about any industry right? The guy has over 2.5 million donars ffs, he is approaching 1% of all americans (every man, woman and child) giving him money.Mak wrote:I will say this: Barack Obama has really dropped in my esteem in the last month or so. I will admit I was not likely to vote for him at any point, but I respected him and believed that if he did indeed become President he was a far better choice than most. I believed him to be of a new generation of politicians, one that would break the current status quo in Washington.
Then he picked Joe Biden as his running mate- one of, in my opinion, the old guard who is at the very heart of that status quo.
Now, today, I read about his involvement in the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac cash give-away, being the #3 (or #2 depending on what site you read) recipient of money from these corporations, at the very same time I'm listening to his speech in Green Bay about the getting rid of the "broken government that allowed this crisis in the first place." And he is directly involved in it.
So, I have come to the conclusion that Barack Obama is just as big a scumbag as any other politician. He's nothing special. He's a lie. Not saying the other guy isn't, but one of the things I was prepared to say before was that Obama was honest and probably a good guy despite disagreeing with some of his politics. I can't say that anymore, and I am being completely honest when I say that makes me sad.

Re: Obama WILL be the next president
So everyone always talks about how polls don't really matter until after the conventions, and they increase in importance after the debates and as we get closer to the election. I think Obama held his own during the first debate, which was supposed to be McCain's strong suit. This upcoming week Biden is going to embarrass Palin, to the point where there might even be some backlash. Nonetheless, no country loving independent will vote for that ticket. Now that it is crunch time, the polls are beginning to move towards exactly what I have been saying forever.

I still think that we are going to take North Carolina and Missouri as well. Finally, the right wing of this country will be repudiated for their horrible philosophies and their incompetent execution of them. I describe exactly why the environment surrounding this election will lead to a historic landslide here.

Re: Obama WILL be the next president
The fun part is if you polled 50% registered republicans and 50% registered democrats, it would be a completely worthless.. your results would likely be 50/50... the point of random sampling is that (provided the sample size is large enough) it's reasonable to expect that the result can be extrapolated to the entire population.
My only requirement on pollsters would be: first question == "Are you definitely going to vote in the election?"
I really don't find it that interesting how slackers would vote if they bothered

However, I just don't get how you think polls mean much of anything.. Look at the past few elections, and Bush's approval rating, and look how that played out (conspiracy theories on vote miscounts aside).
I just really take all of this shit with a grain of salt until the election results are in.

Here are some simple graphs for you. I know you want to burry your head in the sand but the polls called 2004 fairly well. My specific reasons to think that way during this election:
I think a lot of people, when faced with a question by a person on the phone or at their front door, would feel enough (white guilt, maybe?) to say they will/might vote for Obama, but when they get to the booth to cast their vote, I think the racism that is still alive and well in this country will be a bigger factor than most are giving credit.

Wow you made a relevant point. I think you are right but you are ignoring the possible counterbalance of ageism which shows up as much more prominent in polling than racism, people are more willing to admit to ageism.Funkmasterr wrote:That's not it, and if you weren't trying so hard to be a prick, you'd see that.Sylvus wrote:Polls don't mean shit. Palin's selection has only exasperated people's concerns about McCain's age.

I'm not dismissing that the ageism could possibly counter-balance things, and probably will at least to some degree. I just think that racism (from all parties, but obviously specifically from white people in this situation) is still more wide spread in this country than people think.Forthe wrote:Wow you made a relevant point. And when it comes to age, I'm sure a good number of the baby boomers (how many kajillion of them are there) will be voting McCain, but I could certainly be wrong on that point.

I question statistics all the time.
Sampling 700 is in no way representative of a voting base of 120,000,000. There are too many variables. The sample size would have to approach 1,000,000 before I'd feel comfortable with it's accuracy, and even then it's a huge fucking stretch to base any decisions on.

Questioning the sample size is valid. That's not what Funk was doing.
Re: Obama WILL be the next president
A sample size of 1% when there are 3 options is overkill. Especially when you average over several samples over time.Fash wrote:I question statistics all the time.

Certainly, when people talk about "swings" between samples I laugh, but you don't have to be an obsessive compulsive pollster to get a feel for how the electorate is leaning.

Right, it's crazy for me to think that the polls would be biases, you know.. considering there is no such thing as a non bias organization anymore. I also question the size of their sample data. Re: Obama WILL be the next president
Obama is surging right now, and 538 currently has him ahead or even in every one of the states that Xyun thinks he'll win. So I started thinking: If Obama did win all those states, how many major cities would be in a state that went for McCain? The answer is very few. Nonexhaustive:
Dallas
Houston
San Antonio
Austin
Phoenix
New Orleans
Atlanta
Nashville
Louisville
Salt Lake City
and for Obama:
Boston
New York City
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Baltimore
Washington, DC
Charlotte
Kansas City
St. Louis
Miami
Orlando
Tampa
Columbus
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Detroit
Chicago
Milwaukee
Minneapolis
Denver
Las Vegas
San Jose
San Diego
Los Angeles
San Fransisco
Sacramento
Portland
Seattle
That is a really serious urban/rural divide. I doubt Obama will take all of those states (especially Missouri). But, given the fact that cities have a lot of people, was it a wise decision for the McCain campaign to push small town values, mock urban elites, etc?

The odd thing about Texas is that of those cities...Houston is red, Austin is blue. San Antonio and Dallas are both blue this election. But the state is still red.
