I can highly recommend the site in the original post be viewed. It's quite hilarious!

I have no interest in Google Chrome. It's not Firefox (which is a better browser... currently) and it's not IE (which is the only thing that works on half our Intranet tools).

A big part of my job is to test... My company has decided it's not important for our product to work in anything other than IE, however I think that's bullshit and don't really care what they (and especially not the moron IT people) think, so I test everything to see how it works. This is largely due to the fact that everyone in customer support comes to me when they can't figure something out, and I know sometime in the near future they are gonna get a call from someone using chrome and they're gonna want my help..

That's a piss-poor attitude.

It's a major waste of resources to support browsers other than IE.
If it were your own company, you can waste your time and money developing for and supporting any and every fucking browser you want.

Until you change that attitude, you're gonna be stuck in go-nowhere jobs like software QA.

Really? Strange that I'm only doing software QA right now to help them out and I've actually moved to development... Trust me when I say that if my attitude is lacking, it's only because this company is being run into the ground when some simple changes could make a big difference..

It's not a waste of resources for a company to support their product in firefox.. It's market share around the world continues to grow, and if someone using our product uses firefox for ever single other thing they do and they have to use IE for our product, in my mind that makes us look bad to that customer.. I know I don't want to have to use a specific browser for different shit, it annoys me.

It's so cute watching pathetic people like you getting your kicks out of annoying someone, it is a constant reminder of how much better than you I am.

Really. It is.

Development hours + Test hours + Customer Support hours = Resources

We got the "Hey DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES install this shit" happygram this AM as well.

EDIT: Our Intranet is coded for IE. If you use Firefox with the tools they behave erratically or just outright fail to work. It's not my company's job to fix this nor mine to waste my time trying to make it work. Cross-browser functionality has a very real cost.

Thing is, our customer support hours are spent either way, because the company wants them to help the people even if they are using a browser we don't support... And those support people don't know what they are doing so they ask myself or a handful of other people for help. So the times being spent, why not make it official? I know the issues with our product in firefox, and they are actually pretty minor.. Probably 20 hours of a developers time would take care of it.

Percentage of PCs that have IE installed: 100%
Percentage of PCs that have Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome, etc installed: not 100%

Cost to develop, test and support your application for IE = $X
Cost to develop, test and support your application for IE and other browsers = more than $X

WebSense has been around for years. It is there for a reason.

Perhaps instead of yelling at "moronic IT people", you can try not being a douchebag to them and maybe learn way to work around WebSense inconveniences.

If you feel that you are above them, however, by all means continue to pound your fists into your desk with righteous indignation!!11!

Go work for Microsoft with that mindset. Yes it costs a little more, but it's Customer Service for christ sake. Some of your customers don't want to use IE to access your services. There's nothing wrong with his frustration, as obviously it is felt by his customers.

You have 100% coverage developing for IE.
Untill the company decides to support other platforms, you're wasting their resources trying to support it.

Oh trust me I do, and I have. Myself and many others have had meeting upon meeting with VP's/managers and the CEO to try and explain to them with data, charts, etc, why the way we are doing things isn't working. This company has gone out of business once before and is headed down exactly the same path again, and it's frustrating as hell that no one wants to listen.. All they seem to care about is getting the investors their money back, cause the investors want out, probably because they see what I see.

Just because I snap about something on a message board doesn't mean any of you people then know enough to gauge how I am at work. I have all the respect in the world for people at work and act as such, until they make me repeat myself a million times, then I stop being polite.

Many of you seem to have the exact corporate attitude that I detest.

I did a great deal of ASP coding around 8 years ago. Try to get that shit to work right on other browsers....whew. Hooray for standardization! Back in the 90s you pretty much had to deal with netscape and IE. Now, you can just toss the other options into a bucket and focus on IE. Of course, all I have to worry about these days is around 50 SQL Server instances. Believe me, that is way more fun than browser-whining. :)

You're missing the part where they tell their internal employees we don't support those browsers, but when customers call in using it management requires us to fix their problem. I had to have like 5 meetings with people to get them to stop supporting Windows 98 a year after MS stopped supporting it....

My company is pretty lenient on how you spend your time, but they would be pretty pissed off if one of our QA people starting testing our product in Firefox for no reason. Granted, we do have a team of developers/QA people working on cross browser compatibility (which is technically a different product from our main one, which will continue to be IE only), but given the experience I have had with designing javascript in IE, 70% of the code which works correctly in IE will not work correctly in firefox. When you find bugs in firefox, do you send it to developers to be fixed? and if not, what do you do with the bugs, since I doubt you make any sort of bug report/task because your bosses would see them and be like "why are you wasting your time?"

I don't spend a lot of time on it. I just get familiar with how the product works in the different browsers and the issues that people might see right away so I'm prepared when I get questions about it from support.

Our product uses - java/xml/xslt - and it actually almost works like normal in firefox. The functionality actually works, it's just mostly navigational and display issues.

Yeah, the java/xml/xslt are all server side or browser independent (our product uses the same stuff), so only client side code will (what i meant by javascript, but it could be a number of things) be effected. The biggest issues I have experienced is the way you are allowed to access the DOM in IE vs Firefox/Opera/Safari. It just seems like you're wasting your time, since you can't report the bug (you don't support firefox), and you can't fix the bug (or I imagine your boss wouldn't be too happy when he asked why you changed stable code and your response was to make it work in an unsupported browser).

Guess you could be spending the time browsing the internet instead, though.

I know.. But until I'm not expected to field questions about a browser we supposedly don't support, I don't really have a choice.

I personally think it's quite noble of Funkmasterr to test browsers they aren't supposed to support. In fact, I think he should spend a lot more time testing every version of every type of browser: IE, FF, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Netscape Navigator, Mosaic, Lynx, Konqueror... He should do full compatibility testing using Six Sigma to identify any defects and encourage his development team to use Agile Development to correct those problems. He should fully document everything that he does (even if some of his methodologies don't particularly value documentation) and when he's finished testing everything, he should go back and start again from the beginning.

Maybe that would be enough to get him to shut the fuck up around here.

I did that on purpose. ;)

(it makes me throw up a little too)
Ugh, likewise. The only thing you could have added was the phrase "going forward."

Also Sylvus your post inspired me to install Lynx on one of our cross browser developers computers, and replace all the targets of his IE, Firefox, Opera, and Safari with the Lynx executable.

Oh really?

Way to completely ignore everything I said and make a comment you have no authority to make. Typical for you though.
So true, lol. However, better to typically ignore a retard than be one, imo.

It probably represents the closest thing the enemy has to satellite coverage, so it's nice to know how much they know.

The difference is I'd rather not deal with the constant shit slinging, name calling, etc - I get zero enjoyment out of it... But if you guys are going to make it a point to piss me off at every step, I might as well return the favor.

Since failing at quitting this place the last (third?) time, you've stated multiple times that the only reason you come here is to piss off/annoy all of us and ruin this place so noone wants to come here anymore.

But uhh, nice try...

What don't you get dude? You guys wanna wreck my fun and spout off everytime I post, I'm going to strike back. What I don't understand is how someone's life is so pathetic that they get their kicks out of getting a rise out of someone, I've never gotten a answer from anyone here to that question.
