I know that in my school district (a really good one at the time), a second language wasn't an option until high school levels...and was optional at that point.
You know, it’s embarrassing … when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe, and all we can say is “Merci beaucoup.” Right?

For those fucks who think we need to apologize if we work hard and make $250,00/year....we should feel guilty?
What are you even talking about? Do you really not understand what he is saying is embarrassing? I'll give you a hint, it's not anything that you mention in that insane raving.
It's embarrassing that just about any European that comes to America (or another European country) can speak English (or one of the languages spoken in said European country), while the vast majority of Americans traveling abroad can only speak English. Embarrassing from a "we're the greatest country in the world" perspective. If you think that's elitist, you're setting the bar a bit too low. Where slavery and high-income come into that, I'll never know.
For someone decrying the tendency for people to make reasonable assumptions based on the information provided in the Vigilante Justice thread you certainly are making some ambitious leaps of logic based on Obama's comments that you took out of context. I'm pretty sure there's a word for that...

I had 3 years of spanish in high school but it was the same format. Only 2 years in high school of the select language was required though.
In the school district my daughter will go to, they start just spanish in 2nd grade, branch to include french and german in 5th grade and expands further once in 9th grade. As it stands, I decided to learn french at the beginning of this year (all three levels from rosetta stone) and enjoy speaking to her in french. She's 2 1/2
and can count to ten, stop when I tell her, up/down open/close fast/slow, run, swim, walk, and most clothing. She doesn't even know it's another language at this age. It's been proven that learning a second language early on is not only the most effective way to learn it, it actually makes you a better english student.
So don't learn another language, my girl will have less competition when she's old enough to go to college and subsequently get a job.
It also makes subsequent languages much easier, even those w/o common roots.

When I was in school down in Florida a second language was required for graduation. I started on Spanish. I then moved to Michigan not that long after and they didn't have any such requirement so I didn't take it. Personally I wouldn't mind the requirement of a second language at a young age. Definitely before high school. Spanish would seem the obvious choice but could also leave it up to the parents.
I had an option of Fench, Spanish and Latin in HS. It was great to have to learn a different language, but I wish they would have gone for a more realistic approach aside from the straight-text approach. I say this because the Spanish spoken by folks from Mexico and other Latin am countries is different, conversationally.
I also took a quarter of German in college. that is a fun language. Need more options across board though. Of course, shit gotsta be more modern now I figure. Pimsleur ftw?
I attended a private school through the 10th grade, and a public high school for 11th & 12th. At the private school, there were no language options until 9th grade, and they were limited to Spanish or French. At my public high school, the options expanded to include German, although if I remember correctly, there was a test program that allowed students to take language courses through one of the local community colleges for a language credit, with their academic adviser's approval. You had to do this during nights or weekends, which hampered participation. I didn't participate in that program, so I don't recall all of the details, and it was only available for a year or two. I don't think my younger sister had that option. I took two years of French in HS, and have never had the occasion to use it. I've forgotten 90% of what I learned. I didn't take any language courses in college. The public school is closed now, and the private school I attended is now attempting to buy that property for its new campus. The public school was one of the best schools in the state at the time, and the two schools that replaced it are even better now, offering several additional options beyond the three we had.
Lately, I've been toying with the idea of learning Spanish. I'm trying to decide if I want to go the self-study route (Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone, etc.), or if I should take a few classes.

What I don't understand is the mindset of the type of idiotic fuckwit who wouldn't want their child to learn as many languages as possible.
There's a difference between being proud (whatever that means) of your language (which is already a deviation of a previous language, fuckwit) and just being a small minded insular piece of shit.
It's pretty obvious which of the idiots posting here would fit into that catagory. Oh and by the way no one's buying the whole "hiding xenophobia behind "omg i like small government"" approach you fucktards are taking.

Again you fail to see that I am looking at the broader scope. I happen to have had my son on Rosetta Stone for the past 4 months. He has been toying with Spanish, Italian and Japanese, but hasn't quite settled on one he would like to concentrate on. *sigh* You children are exhausting.

lol. And that's different from what you have been doing in what way?
As much as you hate my opinion and views, all I've been doing is expressing those here. I'll try and assimilate to the obvious behavior of the majority of this board and try and refrain from doing so, since it is not welcome here. I will try and just post random hatred, call people out on stupid things and try to derail every ones opinion. I just want to get along.

If you learned one of those languages with the rolling r's when you were between 5 and 12, you'd be able to pull it off. My wife can't do the r's in french, but since I learned hebrew as a youngster i'm able able to do it since the method to make that sound is similar.

Nods. I lived in Italy for a couple years when I was younger and learned a lot of Italian while I was there and can pronounce the r's quite well.
Errr, I mean, maybe your wife is a fucking moron then. LMAO
Obama was stating an opinion not a policy, big difference. I think it is a smart opinion. We were only offered French here and not until High School. At that age I couldn't give a fsck about learning any other language, I certainly didn't see the benefit that I do now. I think offering it at a much younger age would be more effective.
From one english only speaker it was a bit embarrassing when I've been over to Europe for work. While most of the people are very polite and attempt to speak english only around you there were times when a native language (Dutch and Norwegian in this case) conversation would break out. The most socially isolated feeling I've ever had.
It really is impressive watching someone switch between 2-3-4 languages, even more so how common it is over there.

I was offered several different languages starting in 6th grade. I think the choices were Spanish, French, and Latin. Maybe even German. I took French. In high school I took a year of Spanish and failed it. Took a year of French and passed. I know more Spanish than French, and that isn't very much. I was educated in Florida.

You managed to pack extreme racism, willful ingnorance, and right wing talking points all into one paragraph. Congratulations on assembling the Triforce of Stupidity. I guess with all your posting here the answer to this question is obvious, but I have to ask, do you not care how stupid or ignorant you are in comparison to the rest of the world? Does the fact that many third world countries have better educated children than this country not bother you in the slightest? Arrogance is no subsitute for intelligence. Being smart and well educated is not an elitist stance, but the powers that be in this country would sure like people to think that, because stupid and ignorant people are easier to control. They do things like direct link talking points from right wing blogs, for example, without so much as qualifying let alone questioning the material on any level. God fucking forbid any of your little fuck trophies should ever develop one iota of understanding of someone else's culture and language.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.

I totally agree that blindly accepting any point of view is foolish, but from what I've witnessed on these boards, those on the left side of things are not the ones that are generally guilty of not thinking things through before taking a position.

I know you are not just now realizing this because I've seen you point it out before this thread. Since I think Xyun was saying emo as in a whiny, angsty retard, not an actual emo kid, this is a bit tangential, but what the hell... Emo crap started in the 80's. Unless you're a good bit older than you claim, it certainly was around your generation. I'm 4+ years older than you, and there were plenty of emo douches around when I was young, and even more among people my sister's age (2 years younger), and even more among people my wife's age (7 years younger). Emo is totally a thing of your generation, emotard.

Fuck Spanish. Spanish is great if you want to be a contractor or manage fruit pickers, but if you want to make the jump into some really expanding markets, we should teach our kids Chinese and Russian.

I think that would be a goth-type person, which we had in our generation.
To my understanding, 'emo' is simply short for emotional. That, of course, would span many many generations. Of course, I am 34, so natually younger and way hipper than you doddering 36+ people.

Mid, how did you get out of the requirement to learn even one language?
I don't recall saying that I did. I took one year of Spanish, French and German. Again, you focus in on the small. I have no issue with a mandatory language introduction in school. I am totally in favor of broadening our educational scope. What I fear is Democrats mandating all school be bilingual. His statement sounds like he is willing to do such a thing. You do not see that. My opinion differs from you. I see such a mandate being the catalyst to making schools bilingual. After that maybe the country becomes bilingual. I'm not 100% certain it would or will happen. Just raising a concern. Socialists scare me. It was not how this country was founded, it was not how I was raised. Many here believe in and support the idea of socialism. I do not.
I do not hold it against you. I do not think you are retarded. I would gladly share a meal in real life with any one of you. Ideas and words don't bother me as much as actions.

No, there was a sub-culture of pop that was classified as emo-core back in the 80's. Though in fairness, most of the bands were underground. By the mid 90's, emo was definitely more popular. I had a few "emo" friends in highschool - over 14 years ago. By that time, the term "emo" was being used and more "well-known" bands were classifying themselves as emo: Fugazi, Sebadoh, Jawbreaker. I think it's pretty safe to say that the emo from when we were young certainly is not the same thing as the watered-down shit kids who shop at Hot Topic and get $150 haircurts that I could (and used to) replicate in my bathroom, with bleach and some paper scissors listen to.

Because it's not right. Look at history. Look at past example of socialist governments. People don't flock to a socialist society. They flock to America because you can start with 1 dollar in your pocket and end up a millionaire. The very thought of it makes my heart hurt.
