I'm borrowing a PS3 for a few weeks and it only comes with 1 controller, so I need to get a second one no matter what, figured I might as well get a decent one. i've seen a few different Sony models and two different Logitech ones, anything else out there that's worth a look?
I still haven't bought a 3rd party controller for the PS3 so I can't comment on the quality of the models I saw with triggers curved outwards.

The new Dualshock 3 for the PS3 has the rumble built in and weighs more than the cheap feeling original PS3 controller. I have issues with the trigger but that probably shouldn't dissuade you from buying the classic style PS2/3 controller (except for their high price)

Although I'd prefer better triggers, I've managed OK with the PS3 controller playing GTAIV.

Because this thread is so great I'll post this news here!
We have no confirmation or sourcing of our own on this, so, we don't vouch for its accuracy. But we will be watching the clock at 10 am Crecente time tomorrow, as CrunchGear is rumormongering that Microsoft will announce Blu-Ray Xboxes will be shipping by Christmas, at that time. Rumor has it they'll cost less than an Elite.

The announcement would apparently be timed to upstage Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference which kicks off an hour later in San Francisco. Here's the full rumor from CrunchGear's tipster:
I’m told MS will upstage Apple with a Monday 9am PDT announcement (1 hour before WWDC) via press release that the Xbox 360 will get Blu-Ray before Christmas. Price was “under the current Elite," but i could get any more details.
One of these rumors will pan out. When it happens, I'll finally by the second, quieter, non hacked, 360 I've been waiting for. It would also be nice for Micrsoft to drop their online Live fees. I suppose that won't happen until Sony actually shows they have something worthy to compete with in Home, Little Big Planet, etc but that keeps getting delayed.

I'm not sure how MS announcing Blu-Ray for the 360 will actually affect Apple at all. Apple isn't in the console business and the big rumor is really the 3g iPhone and OSX 10.6. They may accounce Blu-Ray in the Macs but that's a big non-issue anyways as you probably won't be able to stream that content to AppleTV anyways..

I highly doubt that the announcement is coming.

How many Blu-Ray on Xbox360 rumors do we have to hear? It's not going to happen. MS is all about digital download. What do they care about Blu-Ray?

The other thing is this: Microsoft will not announce this until it's a week or so from hitting the shelves. If they announce this 8 months before it's ready to ship, their 360 sales for the year will completely die off. Who in their right mind would buy a 360 when the next one with a high def player built-in is just around the corner.

* Q: In January, Warner Bros. announced that it was going to support Blu-ray, the high-definition DVD format. Since then, the rival HD DVD format has gone away. Microsoft supported HD DVD with an Xbox HD DVD attachment. What is your plan there?

* A: Our plan continues to focus on high-definition experiences. Xbox 360 has a great ability to deliver those through the Xbox Live (online download) service. It's a great way to get the high-definition concept because it's right there. There's no additional media. There is nothing you need to purchase.

If you look at the Blu-ray player market, you haven't seen the acceleration everybody expected (since the demise of HD DVD). It's not as much about whether all the content is in a Blu-ray format or a HD DVD format. You have to look at how fundamentally compelling the difference is between a progressive scan DVD player and the picture that it can produce and what you get on a high-definition player. The reality is there is some difference, but most people look at it and say, "I am not going to pay extra for that."

* Q: So no plans for Blu-ray in the next generation Xbox?

* A: No. There is nothing to even talk about right now with regard to the next generation. That is so far out that there isn't anything to talk about.

GTA IV, quite famously, was delayed from being a 2007 release to being a 2008 release because of problems Rockstar were having with the Playstation 3 version of the game. And now Codemasters admit that whilst the Microsoft Xbox 360 version of Grid runs at a solid 30 fps the Playstation 3 version doesn't. These are just two of the latest of a long stream of disappointments with the comparative performance of the PS3. What is happening here?

For the PS3 Sony wanted to have a technology advantage so they developed, in conjunction with Toshiba and IBM, the Cell processor. A clean sheet design with many innovations this took $400 million and four years to develop. The intention was to use two of these in the PS3, one as CPU and one as GPU. However at the last minute Sony realised that the Cell GPU wasn't up to the job so they went to nVidia and bought their 7800GTX GPU. This gave them a number of disadvantages:
* It wasn't designed or optimised as a console GPU. It was designed and optimised as a PC GPU.
* The whole architecture of the console was compromised by the last minute change.
* The 7800GTX has less raw processing power than the Microsoft Xbox 360 GPU.
Gotta love that slapped together PS3!

Before Sony can even get their Home/Avatars released (keeps getting pushed back), will Microsoft have something in place to match it?

http://kotaku.com/5016638/microsoft-ava ... e-licensed

For a console virtual environment, I'd rather take a more cartoony approach which it looks likeMicrosoft will do. (Cartoony but with much better graphics, customization, high definition, and great Live Online unlike Wii and their Mii pixelated things)
Well, well, well, what have we here? Looks like we're finally getting some real evidence that Microsoft really does have some sort of response to Nintendo's Miis on the way. It's been rumored for some time now and the above shot of the linked flash page seems to portend the end of the rumors. Giving the rumor more credibility is that the information contained in the image, supposedly taken from an online survey, conforms to details recently given to Joystiq by a trusted source. These "Xbox Avatars" certainly look to do everything that Miis do and more.

Taking into account that Microsoft doesn't seem too troubled by the rest of the year, this, along with the rumored "Newton" controller, could possibly be what they're betting the farm on.

Hmm ... E3 should sure be interesting this year ...

Re: The Official PS3 thread!

The best thing I've done on the PS3 is download Blu-Ray quality movie trailers. That's not saying much. PS3 blows.

Looks like it's not getting any better in the near future. 360's simple Avatar project looks like more fun than this massive continuously delayed PS3 project:
My Brief Surprise Visit To Sony's PS3 Home Beta

Sony's virtual world Home service is still not open to the public. And it's beta is closed to only select people, a group that doesn't include the press. But I recently found myself in front of a PlayStation 3 that had the Home Beta running on it and decided to give it a try.

Now I know why they're not inviting the press yet. Home is still in its good-in-theory phase. In execution it's still lacking. I'm all for Betas having rough edges. That's the point. But I was surprised that the Home Beta doesn't seem to have that something special — the thing that yet makes it obvious it's going to be a hit.

Sorry for the vague terms, but Home is a vague kind of thing. Are you supposed to have fun with it? Or, like most other interfaces, just take pleasure if it works smoothly?

I spent about 10 minutes with Home. I loaded it off the PS3 cross media bar, taking control of a lone avatar. During my brief time in Home I saw no other avatars. The service looked as it has in screenshots. It still has a virtual PSP for an interface as well as a diverse set of pre-canned emotes. I made my guy dance.

I went from an outdoor area to the movie theater lobby to an amusement area containing a bowling alley and an arcade. If that all sounds familiar it's because it was. The Beta wasn't packing any pleasant surprises.

Instead, what I encountered was a lot of loading. Each area my avatar stepped into had to load. This could be because the person who's PS3 I was using hadn't used Home before. It did underscore how key swift movement is going to be in Home and how frustrating it will feel if it takes too long to get from, say, the lobby area to the area where you'd go watch trailers. In the current Beta, loading isn't done even once you're in an area. In the movie theater, for example, framed wall-hangings initially displayed screens with loading progress bars on them. The videos that needed to display took a moment to show up.

The arcade was the best area I saw. It has a few stand-up video game machines including a Chop Lifter-style game that's been shown before as well as a locomotive-stacking puzzle game. I tried bowling and found it about as basic as Grand Theft Auto IV's implementation.

There's a reason projects are in Beta and not release. All the kinks aren't worked out. New ideas are surely being considered. And, clearly, Home can't be accurately judged when no one but yourself is in it.

So what's the big takeaway? Home is clearly still a work in progress, functioning not that differently from what you heard about more than a year ago. Whatever it needs to make it a hit, I don't think it's in there — yet.
Whether it gets any better, it looks to be a long ways off no matter what from a system already way behind and slapped together with off the shelf graphics and hard to program CPU. If the screenshot I saw of their trophies is real, don't get too excited about those either over 360's achievements.

Edit: Fixed a couple typos!

In-Game XMB walkthrough

Post by Animalor »

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/ ... 1-the-xmb/

Some great stuff shown here. Sony is getting their game together in a good way.

2 things though just for nitpicking's sake (nothing major mind you).

1 -It seems that from the video, players will have to manually pause before opening the XMB or else the game will continue. Devs will probably have to do the legwork to get the auto-pause when the PS button is pushed.

2 - It also seems that if you want to play your own music, you'll have to kill the audio on the game you're playing manually.

Do you really have to activate the Bluetooth headset from the XMB to use it? Also, do you have to turn it off when you're done? As well, does the PS3 split the voice channel out from the game audio like the 360 does? (voice to Bluetooth headset, game to TV/Receiver)

just finished watching the video after wondering what the heck XMB stood for...and I still can't tell. I understand it to be the menu, but why XMB?

Also, it sounded to me like he paused only the music soundtrack in-game when he switched to his own music. He mentioned that he could still hear game sounds.

The bluetooth activation sounded a bit tedious if you do have to activate it every time like that.

XMB stands for Cross-Media Bar.
I thought I could hear game effects in there with the music during the video as well.

All in all it's a great update and one PS3 owners sorely deserve.

Part 2 http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/ ... -trophies/

I just watched the trophy video. Some cool stuff there as well. They changed it up so instead of gamerscore, there's no numeric value attached to the front end however after a certain amount of trophies, your gamercard levels up as it were where you'll be a Level 2, Level 5, level 1000 gamer.

Different interpretations of the same thing.

Poor Sony, they can't seem to get a break...

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/sony- ... 0-effects/

Short of this issue - 2.40 went live last night. It fucked up a LOT of PS3's. There's a 55 page post on the boards over at playstation.com.

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playsta ... ing&page=1

Sony has now pulled 2.40 update from their servers until forther notice and they fix this issue.

PS3 blows. Watch those figures reverse next month.

Peruse the gamer sites and read the comments. It's not hard to find a bunch of comments after the press conferences about people now wanting to buy a 360. Not so much for the PS3 and the Nintendo showing was as bad as ever but people will still buy the Wii anyway for some inexplicable reason.

I don't know why you need to be the one idiot in here defending the PS3 to the death.

Metal Gear came out, sales went up. Their sales in the US have not been "strong" this year, they have been mediocre.

I'll bet when Resistance 2 comes out the sales will go up too! You gonna make a post then about how good the sales are for the PS3?

It's really no wonder why people think you're a complete moron with no fucking clue about anything except shitty rap music.

In 2008, the PS3 has outsold the 360 in the US by roughly 25%
In 2008, the PS3 has outsold the 360 worldwide by more than 50%
The Wii has surpassed the 360 in total US sales (despite the 360's 12 month head start).
By the end of the year, total sales for the PS3 should be within 10% of the 360.

Your comments are based on your uninformed, ignorant and pitifully biased opinions.

Again, The PS3 has not passed the 360 yet, and will not. I guarantee you that you will be wrong about the PS3 being within 10% of the 360 by year end. After the news at E3, the 360 sales are almost assuredly going to go up at quite a quick rate in the U.S. (I've explained before that I don't care about sales in the U.S.'s bitch (your country) Europe, Japan or anywhere else for that matter). This fall when the new features are implemented (specifically netflix) that will be an even bigger boost.

The point is, you don't own the PS3 or the 360 to the best of my knowledge, you just come and make comments in these threads to be an annoying fuck. I have no time or tolerance for people who do shit like that to get a reaction out of others, thats why I have more respect for the rocks stuck in the fucking bottom of my shoe than most of the people that post here, you included. Go fuck yourself.

Microsoft got spanked hard last month. Proof of what a good exclusive can do.

I'm surprised that Ninja Gaiden 2 didn't do better in software sales. Then again it is a very niche.

I think we'll be seeing a pricecut on the 360 sooner than later if July comes up similar to June. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 360 Arcade in the 249 to 229$range by the time Madden 2008 comes out. I also suspect that by Black Friday, the 60GB pro will be 299$ permanantly and the Elite will be hovering at 379$.

The fact of the matter is that with Blu-Ray not being the HD format, the average consumer sees more value for the money with the PS3 than the 360.

Oh. and the MS division that runs Xbox/Zune finally posted a profit this year.

Right. Digital downloads and netflix services like xbox is going to have are the direction things are going, and will continue to go. Spending $400 (or whatever the PS3 costs) on a Blu-Ray player with a few good games is massively retarded unless you have a lot of money.

I can't buy movies on Xbox, nor is Netflix actually available in Canada.

Sony actually sells movies on the PSN now as well as renting, and the rent price on their service is CHEAPER than MS.
(Not that the service is available in Canada either mind you.)

The PS3 has not passed the 360 yet, and will not. I guarantee you that you will be wrong about the PS3 being within 10% of the 360 by year end.
Jesus fuck you're stupid.

Near the end of 2007, the 360 was sitting at around 14-15 million sales worldwide.
Currently, it has roughly 20 million.

Near the end of 2007, the PS3 was sitting at aroun 6 million sales worldwide.

I guess math is not your strong suit.

I'm willing to bet that microsoft is concerned that it's lost it's stranglehold on the US market. The US is the only market that has really embraced the 360. I see the announcements that MS made as more of desperation moves. Hoping they could somehow slow down the Wii juggernaut.

That's exactly the point.
I have no emotional investment in any videogame console. I have no bias... nothing like the intimate emotional relationship you seem to have with your 360.

I'm just posting fact and sales figures for video game consoles.
It's really not my fault that you think I'm trying to be an annoying fuck by posting these sales figures.
Maybe you should ask yourself why you get so annoyed and upset when you see the PS3 nearly doubling the sales of the 360.

Again, could you link where you're getting this information? I briefly looked but did not find anything that looked reliable.

Various places.

Google is your friend... but for quick reference, NPD and VGChartz aren't too bad.

Miir never posts sources for his numbers, but he tries to make you find them yourself (since he can't seem to post links). I think that was mentioned several pages ago in this same thread. Also, he ignores specific points when he posts his "numbers." Funk specifically talks about US sales figures, and Miir ignores that and starts spitting out worldwide figures.

I posted the NPD (US) sales figures for last month.
Every single fucking console blog will have those numbers posted today. The PS3 biased blogs will be saying that the 360 is dead, the 360 biased blogs will try to spin it as it as an anomaly or try to discredit the source.

VGChartz seems to be unbiased and mostly accurate.

Funk specifically talks about US sales figures
Unless otherwise indicated, the numbers I post are US sales figures.

Also, he ignores specific points when he posts his "numbers."
What specific points?
Please list those points specifically and I will address them.

read it your damn self. He specifically talked about US figures. You specifically posted world figures. The fact that you NEVER post sources for the numbers you throw out here, along with the fact that you will always refuse to acknowledge and tailor your "argument" to match the one actually taking place is why you get called out on refusing to post them all the time.

It's been a trend on this thread...
A few pages back, some people (myself, winnow, aslana, animalor) posted sales figures.
We got into a discussion about how poorly the 360 was doing worldwide.
Funk opened his moronic trap about how he personally doesn't care about Japanese or worldwide sales.

Since then, every single set of sales figures that have been posted were (unless specified) US figures.

I really don't give a shit about what sales figures you or funk find personally relevant.
I'm just posting information.

I couldn't care less about which console "wins." I just find it funny that you are more rabid about it than even Funk. Like Aardor mentioned, post where the information came from. Links* motherfucker! Not Lynks or Lynx

During E3, I believe I heard 360 game sales are more than PS3 and Wii combined.

Having a console in your home means nothing. Sony and MS actually lose money on their systems. The real money is in the software, and Xbox reigns supreme by an extremely respectable margin. Meanwhile, Nintendo makes money on every Wii they sell, which is great for Nintendo. However, the fact that software sales in no way match the market penetration of the Wii itself, I think that is a red flag to game developers and 3rd party companies.

PS3 = Blu Ray player that plays games
360 = Game machine that plays movies
Wii = Toy with simple games

There is a market for all 3 (obviously), but I see the 360 as the gaming platform that's going to make game developers the most money because 360 owners simply purchase more games.

PS3 wins in their own way because people will buy Blu Ray movies to play in their PS3. The make money both ways. It's worth noting that Blu Rays sales never took off the way people had predicted once HDDVD conceeded the format war. I always thought that was interesting.

Nintendo is the overall winner because they're making more money than anyone. I don't see 3rd party developers flocking to the Wii because they aren't really getting a piece of that pie when compared to Nintendo.

Yeah, I really was just curious where you got the information. None of the info you posted appears to be wrong, given those sites, but maybe some of your conclusion will prove to be incorrect.

I enjoyed how a bunch of the articles said that this month sales beat all of the 360's best months, except for the one when Halo was released =P.
