Star Trek *** Spoilers Discussed Inside ***
Going to see this movie tomorrow. Should be interesting. What number movie is this anyhow? 10th?
Just got back from the movie and I am still trying to absorb it all. The only thing that truly bothered me was that they never once mentioned Lor when they found B4. Even in passing or as word of caution they never mentioned it. Now my memory is a bit fuzzy here, what was the fate of Lor during the series?
DATA IS DEAD! (warned you not to look)
Not that I forsee them making another movie with this cast, especially when it is getting harder to hide Brent Spiner aging.
I like the look of the new ship.
Another thought just hit me. *ouch* Why was Worf on the Enterprise this time? I can understand being part of the wedding party and such but why would he have to take tactical if he isn't a member of the ship?
Admirial Janeway? That was cool to see but I would have liked to have seen a few more cameo appearances by other Trek Alumni.
That's all for now.

I am with you on the Lor thing. It felt wrong. They discover his face and I think immediately - oh - Lor survived (he was destroyed at the end of the TNG series).
That one glitch aside, I thought this was hands down the best ST yet. I will have to admit, I cried for Data. Spock was literally my first hero when I was growing up and ages ago when TNG first started, I thought of Data as just a Spock replacement. As time moved on in that series and in the 4 films, Data has become my favourite charater ever.
It was truely sadening for me to see him die. Yes, they have a way out in B4 (with the TWOK similarity of the memory dump), but I am guessing they do not take it. Likewise, though, it would be disapointing to see Brent Spiner return to portraying something akin to the old Data as a new B4, as his character has grown so much since its introduction. One os TNGs great accomplishments - intentional or otherwise - was the very slow transformation of Data from an unfeeling android striving to be human to an emotional being. Even in this Movie, Data was more "human" than he had ever been before. I am not sure I want to witness the transformation start over in B4.
Troy. What can I say. After 7 season and 3 prior movies, they finally used her correctly. Troy has always been to me the glaring anoyance inside the TNG cast. I have always hated her character. I have to concede, though, this time she made perfect sense. How a Star Ship could carry with it a Telepath and Empath and never once consider using those abilities to attack the ememy was always mind boggling to me. I am glad they finally figured that one out.
Finally, for now, some Trek blaspheme. the TNG crew is the best, most well delevloped and most interesting crew of any of the series, including the original. None of the movies, until this one, however, was really satisfying in how those relationships built in the series translated to screen. I really cannot say enough good things about this film.

Shinzan was just a lunatic though, He had no legitimate gripe with anyone.
Listening to him try and explain himself reminded me of vault trolls.
Jordy says "I can't believe the captain approved this memory download" Right, because it shouldn't have happened. If I find a copy of data that was just within the past few days cut into 6 and spread around a large area on a remote planet.... I'm not going to upload the brain of fucking data into it for no reason especially when on an important mission to begin with. It was clearly altered and there was no fucking reason to put it together.
I think it was a good Star Trek episode, but I don't think it was anything phenmomenal.... it was just too bogus.... going to go see it again to double check heh.

A few points,
Worf was present because they were all on the Enterprise heading to Betazed to attend the wierd nude ceremony. They got caught up in the whole Romulan/Remen thing, the Enterprise was diverted from it's pleasantries and off to save the day, dragging Worf along.
This was set after the return of Voyager, and Janeway was promoted to Admiral.
My real big beef was this:
Wesley was present at the wedding ceremony. Now, why didn't he use his amazing abilities of the "traveler-type thing" to save the day? Or why wasn't he at the helm? Why was he in uniform when he left the Federation? Why didn't he get sucked out when the main viewer was blown up and the bridge was breeched? Why, god, why?
Anyway, jus incase anyone wants to know, the Enterprise E is a new class of starship, Dreadnaught class. It is a lot like a moving space station, which I imagine has it's advantages.
Still, over all, best STK Movie ever, notice how the even numbered ones are decent if not spectacular, and the odd ones are kinda shit?

Wait a sec, Wesley was in the movie? I totally missed that when I watched it. If he was in the movie then why didn't he have any speaking parts in it. I remember seeing Whoopi in there as well. I wonder why she wasn't involved on the ship.
I think the problem I have with the film is that it was too one directional. I remember enjoying the series so much because it had multiple stories going on per episode. I think they should have tried to incorperate that into this film.
What we need is another epic style movie for these people. Remember when the Borg first made their way towards earth and took out a shit load of fed ships? That was cool. I didn't feel any real kind of threat with these goblin looking Remans.

2 are joined in a wedding
2 androids side by side
2 DNA Matches of Picard Side by Side
2 First Officers to Picard DNA side by side
2 Ships each led by a Picard DNA
2 Romulan Warbirds
(Did I miss any?) They all make contact and are destroyed after, except the wedding, and that could be subtle commentary on a wedding destroying the man
One Warbird is destroyed ( okay contact with the other is skating here but they were part of same team their individual captains touched)
Command ships meet, one is later destroyed
First Officers meet and one is destroyed
Picard's meet and one is destroyed
Androids meet and one is destroyed
Except for some glaringly annoying things ( Like the silly betazoid powers, they could have just located the bloody thing by a small damage trail) it was okay, but it lacked oomph, like the last one did.
Oh and was I the only one waiting for the bond theme to kick in during the sequence when they were running after finding the android parts?

Here is a question. If this is going to be the last movie with this cast, will there be another movie and which cast will be staring?
DS9? It has been a long time since I saw any episodes so I am not sure how this would pan out.
Voyager? They are already home. What else is there for them to do? Janeway is now an Admiral and even though Kirk did it I doubt she would up and give up her position to go play captain again.
Enterprise? This could be interesting but I don't think they have been out long enough as a series for them to even considered. Get a few more seasons under the belt before attempting to hit the big screen.
Something new? A different ship, using established characters, in the star trek universe? That would be a great way to kick off a new series if it was done right.

Well, saw it today. Did my Treki duties of leaving work early, and going.
I liked it. It was definitely worth it. Although I enjoyed First Contact more, this movie is right up there. A couple complaints: one was that they strayed to much from the plots path. Too many little this, and little that. Like the whole "raping of the mind" thing, and all that. Just seemed silly he wanted to bang Troy that bad, then said "Ah fuck it, I'll just go jerk one out" type mentality. They just did not go into the subplots enough to make them subplots.
Second, I don't think the movie was long enough. Another half an hour would have made it better. I mean, give Data a better send off.
And Dar, I cried for Data too. After watching the series, and the movies, and his "growing up", you feel as if you lost your best friend. The connection was made with the character, and it is hard to sever it so severely. Unfortunately, you kind of knew it was coming, after all, how many friggen' times has Data been there for Picard? Sooner or later, one had to lose.
In the end, great film, and a definite second showing for me. I'll be going right after I see Lotr:TT for the 20th time.
Great reviews all.

Data leapt over to it, reasonable assumption that he calculated thrust and force vectors to reach it, and then hauled ass to hit the right numbers, floated across and grabbed on, then hauled himself in and rocked.Siji wrote:Someone want to explain how Data made it to the enemy ship to rescue Picard? I'm beginning to think that the same people that come up with Highlander sequel plots are writing Star Trek scripts.
Nothing is worse than Highlander 2

I agree with the sentiments of everyone else here. I grew up (literally, i'm 18 now, and watched them since i was 3) seeing Data transform from a walking robot to a sentient being who became more human that he realized. I know Brent Spiner saw a reason to destroy the character due to his age, but I still felt this shock upon the big screen blowing up and Data inside. I think my heart stopped beating for a few seconds, because those people up there weren't just characters, they were people, and they had become great friends to us in our lifetimes--and theirs. However, I think that Data died perfectly. A noble sacrifice to save the life of one whom he had admired and loved (if such a thing is possible for android which, in Data's case, it is) seemed a fitting end for him. Overall, excellent movie.

From what i read this won't be the last movie for SNG, how i heard it is they are going to attempt to make as many as the original series.Bubba Grizz wrote:Here is a question. If this is going to be the last movie with this cast, will there be another movie and which cast will be staring?
