She is currently 42nd out of the top 100 players on the tour, where she usually is.
She definitely gets more attention than she deserves for her playing ability, but then Cameron Diaz couldn't fucking act sad at her father's funeral and I don't see anyone bitching when she is on the cover of Maxim or getting $5 million dollars to star in another shitty film starring Cameron Diaz as Cameron Diaz. She makes money for the league by drawing crowds and making the game more popular, and is a solid player; just not a superstar.
It just annoys me that people look down on others because they aren't the best.

Heh, this week she won her first game in a major tournament since what, 2001?
She still hasn't won a tournament on the WTP circuit - she is good looking and a good tennis player, but she's hardly worth all the fuss.
I'd hit it, though.

What's not to be impressed with, as far as her assets go? She's a hot, young, athletic girl with an accent. Doesn't get a whole lot better than that in my book.

At the risk of incurring your wrath, I don't understand why you seem to be defending Kournikova so much, kyoukan. I figured you'd despise the fact that she is famous and popular (and well paid) based on her looks, rather than her actual athletic performance.
Granted, she probably plays tennis better than the majority of the people who post here. But so does just about anyone in the WTA. And compared to many of the players in the WTA, Kournikova is small potatoes. She's finally spiffing up her game, say her PR people, but she has yet to win any Singles titles in her career, much less any Grand Slam titles - and she went pro back in 1995.
I guess it matters what you are defending here. I definitely think that Anna has brought, by accident or by design, a tremendous amount of attention to Women's Pro Tennis. And though she's an average player by WTA standards, she doesn't necessarily suck, and has moments where she truly shines, particularly in doubles. She is still young, and has the potential to become a truly great tennis player. But it bothers me that there are great players with both looks and terrific tennis skills ranked above her, that are practically ignored by the media. Maybe they aren't sensational enough? Perhaps their PR reps aren't marketing them as pop-culture icons?
Not necessarily arguing here, just trying to see where you're coming from on this one.

It would be safe to say they she plays tennis better than most people in the world. Currently ranked in the top 50, she could probably kick any of our asses on her worst day.Granted, she probably plays tennis better than the majority of the people who post here. But so does just about anyone in the WTA. And compared to many of the players in the WTA, Kournikova is small potatoes. I believe the highest she was ever ranked was 8th in 2000.
She did make it to one final in 2000 but lost in straight sets to Martina Hingis.
I don't think the WTA would consider Kournikova 'small potatoes'. She's one of the tours biggest draws. Despite the fact they are incredible tennis players, the Williams' sisters have neither the looks or appeal of Kournikova or even Hingis.

All I know is if I'm flipping channels and happen to see her playing, I'll stop flipping and watch

If I got pissed off at every person who gained notariety from their looks over their skill or talent my brain would explode. I probably could not name one person that's been on the cover of Maxim that is there because they are a good actress or athelete. They are all there because they are hot. Most are awful at anything other than looking good and self-promotion; at least Kourinkova can play tennis well.Corona wrote:At the risk of incurring your wrath, I don't understand why you seem to be defending Kournikova so much, kyoukan. I've played tennis before (for pleasure only), and it's a hard fucking sport. I respect anyone able to play at the level she plays at. It's not like she is a bad tennis player by any stretch of the imagination. In fact she fluctuates all the way from 100 to the top 10 depending on her game.
It annoys me more to see people making fun of someone because they aren't the best in the world at something more than it annoys me to see people get ahead because of their looks.
Yeah and if this was Sports Illustrated or some movie mag it would be a deal, but Maxim is about HOT WOMEN. Therefore it is only logical that they do not have cover pics based on sports or acting skills.kyoukan type-R wrote:I probably could not name one person that's been on the cover of Maxim that is there because they are a good actress or athelete.
