Obama WILL be the next president
Re: Obama WILL be the next president
Actually, it's his actions that dictate the vast majority of the Globe and the US's shitty opinion of him. Are you actually trying to defend George Bush by calling critics of him lemmings?
Jesus christ you don't have a fucking clue what you're even saying nowadays do you?

I agree.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:Again you focus on us, instead of saying something.....anything.Nick wrote:It's pretty tragic that Democracy can be so easily manipulated by smear. I think you've spent far too fucking long under a Bush and Clinton regime to have even the vaguest idea what issues matter, or what they even are, or where the candidates stand, and why you support one of them at this point.
It is indeed a tragedy that our democracy can be so easily manipulated by smear. Our media has been smearing Bush since day one of his presidency. Not so surprising a large percentage of the lemmings think he a horrible president and a moron. You've been being told he is such for 8 years.
It won't be in my lifetime, but history will eventually show President Bush to be one of the most consequential presidents of all time.

I think history will view it as the Peaks and Valleys presidency, since he's seen both the highest and lowest approval ratings of any president. Since the peak was at the beginning and the valley has been toward the end, they'll probably use it as a primer as to how not to run your presidency.

Here is Obama in a nutshell.
http://www.votesmart.org/npat.php?old=t ... form_id=69
First lets hit this gem:
Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.
Increase state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.
...and not included on here is his desire to institute a federal law banning concealed carry.
Lets just take a look at the amount of things he checked off as "support government funding of"
Increase state funds for programs which rehabilitate and educate inmates during and after their prison sentences.
Provide funding for military-style "boot camps" for first-time juvenile felons.
Increase funding for state job-training programs that re-train displaced workers or teach skills needed in today's job market.
Increase state funds for professional development of public school teachers and administrators.
Favor charter schools where independent groups receive state authorization and funding to establish new schools.
Increase state funds for school construction and facility maintenance.
Fund public school education in Illinois by increasing certain state taxes and decreasing local property taxes.
Provide state-funded tuition and fees to any Illinois student who attends a public college or university as long as they maintain a B average.
Provide funding for recycling programs in Illinois.
Support state funded efforts to decrease erosion and make other improvements along the Illinois River.
Provide tax incentives to small businesses who provide health care to their employees.
Provide health care to uninsured children by expanding Medicaid.
Use state funds to continue some Medicaid coverage for legal immigrants.
Increase state funding for programs to prevent teen pregnancy.
Increase state funds to provide child care to children in low-income working families.
Increase state funding for Head Start in order to serve additional children and/or increase services from a half to a full day.
Increase state funding for community centers and other social agencies in areas with at-risk youth.
Support state funding of programs for at-risk youth such as guaranteed college loans and job training and placement.
Support state-funded loans for facilities seeking to provide child care for welfare recipients.
Who pays for all this?

Re: Obama WILL be the next president
It's somewhat disingenuous to post that list without posting the context that list was in. For example, given the "crime" question, the options that Obama had to choose from (his choices in bold) were:
a) Increase state funds for construction of state prisons and for hiring of additional prison staff.
b) Support contracting with private sector firms to build and/or manage state prisons.
c) End parole for repeat violent felons.
d) Expand the use of the death penalty for additional circumstances relating to murder.
e) Oppose the death penalty.
f) Implement penalties other than incarceration for certain non-violent offenders.
g) Inform communities when a convicted sex offender moves into the community.
h) Increase state funds for programs which rehabilitate and educate inmates during and after their prison sentences.
i) Decriminalize the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
j) Strengthen penalties and sentences for drug-related crimes.
k) Strengthen penalties and sentences for sex offenders.
l) Prosecute juveniles who commit murder or other serious violent crimes as adults.
m) Provide funding for military-style "boot camps" for first-time juvenile felons.
n) Require "impact incarceration" (23 hours per day lockdown) for the first six months of each prisoner's sentence.
o) Support laws requiring restitution to crime victims at the personal expense of the criminal.
p) Require HIV testing for all incoming prison inmates.
q) Other
Rehabilitation and education are, as far as I know and short of the death penalty, the only effective means to combat recidivism. Which, in turn, means less money spent on prisons and potentially less crime. I see several other options on that list that also cost a lot of money and are alternatives to what he thought were options he agrees with. What do you propose he do instead of those things, bury his head in the sand and pretend that something doesn't have to be done? I see a number of places where he supports measures for economic stimulus and creating jobs, measures for making education and job training easier to obtain, programs to help fight the astronomical rate of people in prison, programs to discourage teen pregnancy (which has a compound effect of saving money paying for those children in many cases, reducing crime (read Freakonomics), etc), child care for people on welfare (which I'd assume has the goal of allowing people on welfare to, you know, try and get a job or something and help get them off of welfare). Many of the things on your list might cost some money today, but almost all of them, if implemented properly, will save money in other areas and down the road. I guess the difference between you and me is that I'm willing to make that investment in trying to turn our country into a better place.
I also don't see why you think he's going to raise your taxes so much. How is it that our current so-called "conservative" president entered office with a $250B annual budget surplus and turned that into a $500B deficit within his first 3 years of office? It wasn't by being conservative.

Are you serious? Prison has every rehabilitative measure they could want in it. They get free education during incarceration...the only thing they really don't get is a counselor and job placement. Whether these individuals choose to use those tools or not is beyond the control of Obama or anyone else. Most of the people going to prison these days glorify the gangsta mentality and view it as street cred....how does my money going to useless programs fix that mentality?
You want to use my money for something that will reduce crime, use it for forced birth control on welfare recipient so they cannot pump out kids they cannot support.... Use it to fry the assholes hat commit murder and laugh in the face of everyone trying to make it out of the damn ghettos with hard work. Use it to educate the people in those same places that WANT it and let these wastes of life fucking fry instead of us paying to force shit on them that they do not want and will not make a difference.
I would love to see a study done on percentage of crimes committed by single parents or welfare parents. My guess is that it would be staggering.

I don't know about the education in prison thing anymore.. My brother is in jail right now and they no longer offer a education program like they used to. I also recall my friend from new york telling me that they couldn't get any kind of an education when he was in prison either, and he was in Otisville in NY.

Re: Obama WILL be the next president
All that it says on that list is "increase funding for education and rehabilitation". I agree with that. John McCain agrees with that, albeit when phrased separately as "Support programs to provide prison inmates with vocational and job-related skills and job-placement assistance when released" and "Support programs to provide prison inmates with drug and alcohol addiction treatment". That pretty much just means "increase funding for education and rehabilitation" in my mind.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:Are you serious? Prison has every rehabilitative measure they could want in it. I'm pretty certain that it's a fact that (and I know I'm butchering the wording of this) children born to younger, lower-income, lesser-educated single mothers have a much higher likelihood of becoming criminals than other children do. I mentioned Freakonomics earlier, I don't have the book in front of me, as it's at home, but here is a statistical analysis of abortion rates vs. crime rates that you might find interesting. I don't think that forced abortion of anyone is a reasonable or viable solution, and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find the slightest percentage of conservatives who would support it. So, that being the case, what's the next most-reasonable solution? In my mind, it's increased funding for programs to prevent teen pregnancy, funding schools and providing guaranteed college loans so young people who might otherwise not know any better than to just "pump out kids" or think they don't have anything else to look forward to other than the life they were given.
Basically, most of the programs you've listed come down to education on some level or another. If everyone were properly educated, you'd see crime levels drop, welfare levels drop, drops in half of the stuff that you obviously don't want your money to be spent on. Guess what, your money is going to be spent either way. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'd rather that money were spent in America increasing our quality of life than in other countries reducing the quantity of theirs. And I'll tell you what, if the crime levels go down, I'll fully support you being able to buy 30 guns a month, because it's obviously a big deal to you that Obama wants to limit you to only one every week or two.

Re: Obama WILL be the next president
The thing that so-called "conservatives" don't understand is that spending government money on community programs (youth outreach) is a good investment in the long run as incarcerating somebody long-term is EXPENSIVE. So, you can send $50K now building a basketball court and maybe $50K a year in hiring somebody to run/maintain programs that will keep a larger percentage of kids out of prison that if it didn't exist, vs. paying $20-50K a year for each kid that ends up in prison. Now, let's say the program keeps 5 kids from a life of crime... the program pays for itself immediately. The only difference, is that instead of paying MORE money to the incarceration industry, we are funneling overall less money into more run down areas - you know, areas that have a dire need.
It's not rocket science, and I'd prefer government to be spending money with a long term view of costs. It's not "soft on crime" to put money into areas where crime is, it's just better, smarter, LESS EXPENSIVE government. Hell, most of these programs pay for themselves in lowered police, guard, court, etc. costs in the short term, and are incredibly less expensive for the taxpayer in the long term. What's there not to like?

Dumb as We Wanna Be
THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
It is great to see that we finally have some national unity on energy policy. Unfortunately, the unifying idea is so ridiculous, so unworthy of the people aspiring to lead our nation, it takes your breath away. Hillary Clinton has decided to line up with John McCain in pushing to suspend the federal excise tax on gasoline, 18.4 cents a gallon, for this summer’s travel season. This is not an energy policy. This is money laundering: we borrow money from China and ship it to Saudi Arabia and take a little cut for ourselves as it goes through our gas tanks. What a way to build our country.
When the summer is over, we will have increased our debt to China, increased our transfer of wealth to Saudi Arabia and increased our contribution to global warming for our kids to inherit.
No, no, no, we’ll just get the money by taxing Big Oil, says Mrs. Clinton. Even if you could do that, what a terrible way to spend precious tax dollars — burning it up on the way to the beach rather than on innovation?
The McCain-Clinton gas holiday proposal is a perfect example of what energy expert Peter Schwartz of Global Business Network describes as the true American energy policy today: “Maximize demand, minimize supply and buy the rest from the people who hate us the most.”
Good for Barack Obama for resisting this shameful pandering.
But here’s what’s scary: our problem is so much worse than you think. We have no energy strategy. If you are going to use tax policy to shape energy strategy then you want to raise taxes on the things you want to discourage — gasoline consumption and gas-guzzling cars — and you want to lower taxes on the things you want to encourage — new, renewable energy technologies. We are doing just the opposite.
Are you sitting down?
Few Americans know it, but for almost a year now, Congress has been bickering over whether and how to renew the investment tax credit to stimulate investment in solar energy and the production tax credit to encourage investment in wind energy. The bickering has been so poisonous that when Congress passed the 2007 energy bill last December, it failed to extend any stimulus for wind and solar energy production. Oil and gas kept all their credits, but those for wind and solar have been left to expire this December. I am not making this up. At a time when we should be throwing everything into clean power innovation, we are squabbling over pennies.
These credits are critical because they ensure that if oil prices slip back down again — which often happens — investments in wind and solar would still be profitable. That’s how you launch a new energy technology and help it achieve scale, so it can compete without subsidies.
The Democrats wanted the wind and solar credits to be paid for by taking away tax credits from the oil industry. President Bush said he would veto that. Neither side would back down, and Mr. Bush — showing not one iota of leadership — refused to get all the adults together in a room and work out a compromise. Stalemate. Meanwhile, Germany has a 20-year solar incentive program; Japan 12 years. Ours, at best, run two years.
“It’s a disaster,” says Michael Polsky, founder of Invenergy, one of the biggest wind-power developers in America. “Wind is a very capital-intensive industry, and financial institutions are not ready to take ‘Congressional risk.’ They say if you don’t get the [production tax credit] we will not lend you the money to buy more turbines and build projects.”
It is also alarming, says Rhone Resch, the president of the Solar Energy Industries Association, that the U.S. has reached a point “where the priorities of Congress could become so distorted by politics” that it would turn its back on the next great global industry — clean power — “but that’s exactly what is happening.” If the wind and solar credits expire, said Resch, the impact in just 2009 would be more than 100,000 jobs either lost or not created in these industries, and $20 billion worth of investments that won’t be made.
While all the presidential candidates were railing about lost manufacturing jobs in Ohio, no one noticed that America’s premier solar company, First Solar, from Toledo, Ohio, was opening its newest factory in the former East Germany — 540 high-paying engineering jobs — because Germany has created a booming solar market and America has not.
In 1997, said Resch, America was the leader in solar energy technology, with 40 percent of global solar production. “Last year, we were less than 8 percent, and even most of that was manufacturing for overseas markets.”
The McCain-Clinton proposal is a reminder to me that the biggest energy crisis we have in our country today is the energy to be serious — the energy to do big things in a sustained, focused and intelligent way. We are in the midst of a national political brownout.

Re: Obama WILL be the next president
We could create our own governmental Maury show for this too. This appeals to me. If you can smack some sense and honor into a punks head you may save money and\or lives down the road. Worth experimenting with in any case, the status quo isn't working so well.
It would run like the typical Maury show: (from wikipedia) "The teen will always systematically flip off and curse at the audience, the most frequently uttered phrases being "Y'all don't know me," "Sit down!", "Shut up!", "Get a job!", or "Whatevah!". The teens will initially act defiant towards the speaker when they are told they will be going to a combination of the following for 24 hours: the Monmouth County Juvenile Correctional Facility, a boot camp, the slums, the Madison A. Daniels Funeral Home, or to take care of a real baby (baby boot camp). In early seasons, the teens used to be brought to a "half boot camp" backstage. Footage is then shown of the girls entering jail (if they are sent there). They are frisked and searched, and then are brought into a room where the "hardcore female inmates" yell at the girls. The girls have emotional breakdowns, and they become compliant with their superiors' commands. The show ends with a crying reunion between the mother and the daughter, with the daughter typically saying she has changed for good.
The ratings would be huge and program would easily pay for itself!

Obama will be the next Kerry, Gore, Dukakis
Republican/Bush ratings are at all time lows. If the democrats can't pull off a win in 2008, they may as well blow up the party and make up a new party name, slogan, mascott, etc.

Sorry how is this Rev.Wright character in the least bit as "devilish" as this John Hagee character?
Re: Obama WILL be the next president
Obama is probably the guy who should be President, but I'm sure the Democrats will do their level best to give the job to McCain.
I can live with that.

Rev. Wright is racist who is working his hardest to hold his "people" back as much as he possibly can (even if he doesn't realize it), and this other guy is making extreme analogies which also just make him and his followers look bad.Nick wrote:Sorry how is this Rev.Wright character in the least bit as "devilish" as this John Hagee character?
They are both morons, and neither one is worse. I realize that by default you want to think that the liberal guy is always better, but you are wrong, so please shut up.

Could you list a few examples of qualifications for being president that Obama lacks and the other viable candidates possess? I'm still trying to decide who to vote for this year.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:Obama is... ...the most un-qualified individual.

Hillary was a lawyer who was found to be involved in many illegal rich-folk land scandals. She was a wife of a sucessful politician. She was a senator for about a year before becoming a full-time candidate/very part-time senator. She never cared about NY, just used it as a stepping stone.
Obama, bullied his way into his first political office. Then snuck in in Illinois when a seat was left open and his only opponent was a last minute fill-in of Alan Keyes. His whole time as Senator was spent campaigning.
McCain served his country in a war and in the Senate for numerous terms. He has actually done things. I think it's really easy to see he is the most qualified. Whether that means he will make the best president or not, I don't know. I don't think so. I think it's the policies and platforms behind the candidate that really matter. They are just the wrapper on the candy that is the presidency. A few politicians have the charisma to trasnscend the puppetry of being the president. Reagan was the last one that did it for me. Maybe because I was young and naive back in the 80's. Should be an interesting election either way it goes.

Re: Obama WILL be the next president
I'm certainly no fan of Hillary, (I think she is evil) but I think these comments are way off. My understanding is, although she was/is indeed a carpetbagger in the Empire State, that she was doing a very good job in the office and most people were happy with her there. She was a senator for about a year before becoming a full-time candidate/very part-time senator. She never cared about NY, just used it as a stepping stone.

Re: Obama WILL be the next president
Obama snuck in? Are you serious? Obama campaigned in the Democratic primary for the Illinois senate seat and beat out four or five other individuals for the nomination. The Republicans in Illinois, fresh off the Governor Ryan scandal, then nominated another Ryan who, whoops, got involved in a scandal and had to duck out. Alan Keyes was brought in to lessen the racial impact of Obama, but Obama still won with a, I believe, 70% mandate.
Don't fucking talk in generalities if they are flat out wrong. If you have a problem with him, fine, tell us why. But don't lie and generalize when you're trying to make a point.

You kind of proved my point Kald. The Ryan scandal and Keyes being put in at the last minute made it an easy win for Barack. HAHA. He was guided into the whole thing. A faction of the Dems have been pushing this guy since before the 2004 Convention.

This is actually one reason a few friends of mine refuse to vote for him. They felt that him being propped up as the 2008 nominee during the 2004 DNC smelled like preparation to place a puppet in the White House for others to control.

But, he's a great speaker. He says a whole lot of nothing, but he does it so well when he has a prepared speech up on that teleprompter, it is captivating a huge chunk of folks. They have no real reason to vote for him other than the fact he's black and speaks well. He is a liberal democrat as much as Hillary is. Her gimmick is that she's a woman. McCain is just McCain. He really doesn't have any flare. His only "gimmick" is being a POW, but he wasn't born a POW like Barack was born black and Hillary a woman, so it's quite different. The deification of Obama is what un-nerves people. I think his performace over the past month has shown a good chunk of those believers he is just a politician.
