srsly? I know that place is hardcore famous...but it looked umm....not good.Ashur wrote:I had no cheesesteak.the guy who drove in the carpool wanted Skyline.

If you say it's not horrible though, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and try it.
Re: Remove the ban on Cartalas and
Tv. Tony Bourdain did a show there. He was eating spaghetti with some kind of chili sauce that looked like lumpy chocolate and topped with shredded yellow cheese.Ashur wrote:It "looked not good" where? Skyline is good eating!
Again, it might be great. But it didn't LOOK good. So I was curious.
Re: Remove the ban on Cartalas and
Oh, yeah, the No Reservations piece? Yeah, they seriously were in "let's mock this food (and everything Midwestern)" mode. If that's all I knew of it, I would stay away too, but it was a really slanted piece IMO.
It's spaghetti with a Cincinnati Style Chili covered with shredded cheddar cheese. They wouldn't quit making fun of the cheese as "orange stuff", I mean it's cheddar cheese FFS it's not like it's supposed to be green...
In fairness, most "California" cooking looks like shit to me. So I guess to each their own.
I still would have rather have had a cheesesteak...

Re: Remove the ban on Cartalas and
Update: This thread made me want a cheesesteak, so I ordered one from the local pizza place that makes an OK cheesesteak (by philly standards). Well, when it got here, it had some sort of sauce on it, and no cheese, so I called and complained. Got my money back, but I still really want a cheesesteak.

You have to do the Cincinnati Sock Party AFTER the chili. That way it burns the victim a little more.

The "orange stuff" comment is because no cheese is actually yellow or orange. For whatever weird reason we (Americans) started putting dye in our cheese, and now everyone thinks cheese is supposed to be yellow/orange. Generally those cheeses don't really taste anything like cheese.
My comment was just that it looked like watered down canned chili "sauce". Like the stuff I might put on a hot dog at someone's backyard party. I guess I'm just used to a very different definition of chili. Also, putting those three things together on a plate sounds like something either a bachelor would throw together out of necessity, or a pregnant woman in the midst of crazy cravings.
Like I said. It sounds/looks absolutely fucking crazy. But i'll give it the benefit of the doubt and try it once.

(P.S. This is the chili I'm familiar with. Just in case you were curious!)
Re: Remove the ban on Cartalas and
It's not like your typical "bowl of chili". It's a little more mild/sweeter. It's not so much watered down, in fact the only real liquid on my plate when I was done was from the spaghetti and the hot sauce I added.
It's not 5-star fare, but it's good eating.

Seriously guys, when did this thread turn interesting?
On Cheesesteaks: Pats is my favorite of those mentioned so far. Ordering is simple: (type of cheese) + ('wit' for onions) + (anything else you want... mushrooms, peppers... don't ask for mayo, tomato, etc). They're not as hardass about it as legend would lead you to believe, especially at Jim's, which is probably the most tourist-centric of the big cheesesteak places. Tony Luke's deserves a mention too.
I had a salad for lunch.

Re: Remove the ban on Cartalas and
here is what you MUST try with that skyline chili.
take a glass type baking pan.....put a layer of say 1/4" of cream cheese in it. Take 2 of those skyline chili packages and heat them and dump them over the cream cheese. Take a pack of shredded cheddar cheese and spread it over the chili and stick it in the oven until that cheese melts. Smack around a couple of mexicans and take their tortilla chips and use them to eat all that cheesy/chili goodness. Drink beer....rinse and repeat

Substitute that muck for some good wholesome pinto beans, fresh jalepenos and top is with some lovely homemade habanero salsa (see cooking section).
PS: Real cheese comes packaged in a Frito-Lay can.

Cream cheese wantons are super popular around here.. It used to be that you could only order the meat ones (I prefer them), but now it's actually harder to find the meat ones, especially at fast food type Chinese places.Canelek wrote:One time I ordered wontons as an appetizer from a Chinese place in Santa Barbara. I would but I'll have zero free time on this trip. I'm just along for the ride as others have it all planned out. I just know Philly and Cheesesteaks are on the agenda. Easton PA is where I'll be most of the time (right on the border of New Jersey. Saved from shame by about one mile)Sueven wrote:

For all of those desiring a history of Easton PA:
http://easton-pa.com/index.asp?Type=B_L ... 3501535%7D
It's pretty damn old. 1750's.
I'll have you know:
In the 1750's Easton was born, at this spot the Indians called "Lechawitauk" or "The Place at the Forks". The Great Square (now known as Centre Square) was, and remains, a gathering place for residents and travelers, in fact, on July 8, 1776, it was the site for one of only three readings of the Declaration of Independence.
Back to the cheesesteaks! The tavern was visited by George Washington and Ben Franklin. It was, like many taverns, a social center of colonial times, and often served as a courtroom until the original courthouse was completed in 1765.

I only lived there for about two months. I started 7th grade in Easton Middle school (they started me in the general classes because I was from the west coast so they thought I was stupid by default. After a few weeks I moved up to the honors classes. Wewt!) I will say that the East coast school was better than the ones I attended in California and Nevada.Aardor wrote:Easton is 15 minutes from where Sueven and I grew up. So no, I didn't go to High School there but my brother played soccer at Easton High School (the one that's right by the huge Dixie Cup. I think their team name was the Bulldogs. (or something to do with dogs)
