Gore Used Fictional Video to Illustrate ‘Inconvenient Truth’
By Noel Sheppard

It goes without saying that climate realists around the world believe Nobel Laureate Al Gore used false information throughout his schlockumentary "An Inconvenient Truth" in order to generate global warming hysteria.

On Friday, it was revealed by ABC News that one of the famous shots of supposed Antarctic ice shelves in the film was actually a computer-generated image from the 2004 science fiction blockbuster "The Day After Tomorrow." [audio available here [0]]

Adding delicious insult to injury, this was presented by one of ABC's foremost global warming alarmists Sam Champion during Friday's "20/20":

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Al Gore's 2006 documentary, 'An Inconvenient Truth," makes the same point with actual video of ice shelves calving. Which shots have more impact?

AL GORE (FORMER UNITED STATES VICE PRESIDENT)

And if you were flying over it in a helicopter, you'd see it's 700 feet tall. They are so majestic.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Wait a minute, that shot looks just like the one in the opening credits of "The Day After Tomorrow."

KAREN GOULEKAS (VISUAL EFFECTS SUPERVISOR)

Yeah, that's, that's our shot. That's a fully computer generated shot. There's nothing real in there.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Audiences expect Hollywood to twist fact into fiction. But Gore's documentary does the opposite, using a fake shot to make a real point, that ice shelves are disappearing, and vanishing ice means global warming.

Apparently, ABC tried to get a comment from Gore concerning the matter, but none was forthcoming:

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Off-camera) And it raises another question for you to consider. Is it wrong for a documentary to use a fabricated Hollywood shot to make a point, even if there's science behind it? Well, we tried to ask Al Gore and the movie studio, but neither responded to our calls.

I wonder why.

Yet, another mystery here is that ABC posted [1] a video of this segment at its website. However, for some reason, the clip ends BEFORE the discussion of Gore's film.

I wonder why.

What follows is a full transcript of this segment.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Off-camera) It seems like there's nothing like a natural disaster to get Hollywood's imagination going. But do movies like the 'Poseidon Adventure" reflect real life or distort it?

GRAPHICS: "CATEGORY 6"

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Nothing matches Mother Nature gone wild in those weather disaster movies. The special effects can blow an audience right out of their seats, and you'll definitely think twice about going on a cruise after seeing 'Poseidon..."

GRAPHICS: "POSEIDON"

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) ...An enormous ocean wave bigger than anything ever recorded capsizes a cruise ship, and only a few passengers survive.

CLIP FROM "WATERWORLD"

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) In another maritime movie, global warming causes water to cover the Earth. The science is so shaky in 'Waterworld" that Kevin Costner even grows webbed feet, and take a look behind his ears.

ACTOR (MALE)

Gills.

CLIP FROM VARIOUS MOVIES

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Is good science a myth in these movies? It's hard to tell when convincing visuals give light to fictitious weather catastrophes, from inland hurricanes to an imaginary icing.

DAVID KIRBY (AUTHOR)

I mean, cinema makes good science and bad science equally realistic.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Author David Kirby attended a recent National Science Foundation meeting of scientists and entertainment producers.

DAVID KIRBY (AUTHOR)

You should worry about the small details.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Their topic, legitimate science in TV and film. Kirby says audiences can be naive, some worrying about lava in there own backyards, for example, after seeing 'Volcano."

CLIP FROM "VOLCANO"

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) In that movie, Tommy Lee Jones has good instincts when he first discovers a problem beneath Los Angeles.

TOMMY LEE JONES (ACTOR)

Find me a scientist, somebody tell me what the hell is going on.

JAKE LOWENSTERN (GEOLOGIST

You have to have the right scientist.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) That would be Jake Lowenstern, the geologist in charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. So how realistic is a lava flow down Wilshire Boulevard?

JAKE LOWENSTERN (GEOLOGIST

Los Angeles is not one of the more likely places to have a volcanic eruption anytime soon. That one was a little bit outrageous.

CLIP FROM "DANTE'S PEAK"

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Lowenstern says movies need a scientific base, case in point, another volcano movie, 'Dante's Peak."

PIERCE BROSNAN (ACTOR)

This mountain's a ticking bomb.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Pierce Brosnan, the scientist, predicts the eruption. It's an explosion of ash and gases of obliterating buildings, toppling trees, and spreading destruction for miles.

KEVIN FURLONG (PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY)

That's one of the scenes that probably is the most scientifically accurate. We know from when Mountain Saint Helens erupted, it blow outwards and it, it laid all the trees down in one direction.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Kevin Furlong and Chuck Ammon used clips from a dozen movies to supplement a course at Penn State University on natural disasters.

DOCTOR CHUCK AMMON (PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY)

Every clip is another exercise in critical thinking. Was that real? It was not fake. Is that realistic or is that completely unrealistic?

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) The professors find the worse the movie, the better the teaching tool. One of their favorites, 'Twister."

CLIP FROM "TWISTER"

HELEN HUNT (ACTRESS)

Cow.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Off-camera) Cows are flying through the air. You can hear them moo.

DOCTOR CHUCK AMMON (PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY)

It's like the 'Wizard of Oz."

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Off-camera) I mean, am I right? When these thing's gonna go by you so quickly, you don't even know it's a cow.

KEVIN FURLONG (PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY)

Oh, sure, because you know that it's going at, what, 200 miles per hour or faster?

DOCTOR CHUCK AMMON (PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY)

It's moving at bullet speeds.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Off-camera) Some people got very angry about this in the weather profession because it makes it look like you don't need to get out of the way of a tornado.

KEVIN FURLONG (PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY)

Well, I think there's always that risk with any of these natural disaster movies that you are making it appear that people can survive them.

DOCTOR CHUCK AMMON (PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY)

Here's a, a shot of Hurricane Katrina. There's the eye of the storm.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) The class arms these students with the knowledge of real weather catastrophes.

DOCTOR CHUCK AMMON (PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY)

Katrina's storm surges were on the order of 15 feet and - in a couple of places up to 30 feet.

CLIP FROM "THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW"

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) But the storm surge in "The Day After Tomorrow" nearly covers the Statue of Liberty, a whopping 300 feet. That's 10 times the size of Hurricane Katrina's storm surge.

DENNIS QUAID (ACTOR)

I think we're on the verge of a major climate shift.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) In this 2004 blockbuster, global warming triggers a change in ocean patterns, setting off hailstorms in Tokyo, tornadoes in Los Angeles...

ACTOR (MALE)

This tornado just came and erased the Hollywood sign.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) ...and the enormous tidal surge engulfs Manhattan. The movie's visual effects supervisor was Karen Goulekas.

KAREN GOULEKAS (VISUAL EFFECTS SUPERVISOR

You started all of these and you say, okay, it's a 30-foot storm tide, a wall of water. But then you look in the shot and in some shots, 30 feet looks too wimpy. And so you just scale it up. What are you gonna do, show the water going up to the ankles of the Statue of Liberty? I mean, you know, it's obviously, if the Statue of Liberty's getting covered over, it's like, uh-oh, we're in big trouble.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL (ACTOR)

Let's go.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) The biggest trouble, an ice age that flash freezes most of the world. These clearly made up weather events in "The Day After Tomorrow" still resonated with the audience. In one study, a Yale professor found that after watching the movie, viewers were encouraged 'to engage in personal, political and social action to address climate change."

GRAPHICS: EXCERPT FROM ENVIRONMENT ARTICLE

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) "The Day After Tomorrow" dramatizes global warming with scenes like this.

ACTOR (MALE)

The whole damn shelf is breaking off.

AL GORE (FORMER UNITED STATES VICE PRESIDENT)

These glaciers are so beautiful.

CLIP FROM "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH"

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Al Gore's 2006 documentary, 'An Inconvenient Truth," makes the same point with actual video of ice shelves calving. Which shots have more impact?

AL GORE (FORMER UNITED STATES VICE PRESIDENT)

And if you were flying over it in a helicopter, you'd see it's 700 feet tall. They are so majestic.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Wait a minute, that shot looks just like the one in the opening credits of 'The Day After Tomorrow."

KAREN GOULEKAS (VISUAL EFFECTS SUPERVISOR

Yeah, that's, that's our shot. That's a fully computer generated shot. There's nothing real in there.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) Audiences expect Hollywood to twist fact into fiction. But Gore's documentary does the opposite, using a fake shot to make a real point, that ice shelves are disappearing, and vanishing ice means global warming.

KAREN GOULEKAS (VISUAL EFFECTS SUPERVISOR)

That was one hell of a shot. I think it's great that he used it.

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Voiceover) It seems the decision for now is left to the audience. Can the same created image educate and entertain us about our planet in change?

SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)

(Off-camera) And it raises another question for you to consider. Is it wrong for a documentary to use a fabricated Hollywood shot to make a point, even if there's science behind it? Well, we tried to ask Al Gore and the movie studio, but neither responded to our calls. John Stossel will back right after this.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

JOHN STOSSEL (ABC NEWS)

And that's our program for tonight. Our thanks to Sam Champion for clearing up those myths about weather. And if you have myths you'd like to share about weather or anything, log on to my webpage at ABCNEWS.com. If you give us some original and surprising ones, we'll put them on '20/20" and in our next myth book. I'm John Stossel. For Elizabeth Vargas and all of us at ABC News and '20/20," we're in touch, so you be in touch.

It is fairly common for documentaries that I watch to use things like re-enactments, and they normallly include a disclaimer stating this.

I agree that is common practice. However in this situation that was not the case, much like a Michael Moore movie this clip was used specifically to be misleading and to add to the "OH MY GOD WE NEED TO ACT NOW" factor to it.

Kinda sad if you ask me.

Well then, go start your car and leave it idling in the parking lot all day, because that shit is obviously not happening!

I'd be interested to see the clip in context and verify that Al Gore is leading you to believe that it is actual footage of the ice shelf collapsing right in front of the camera. In the above transcript you have Al Gore saying that the glaciers are beautiful and majestic and 700 feet tall... and nothing else.

Unless there is text on the screen somewhere stating specifically that it's not real footage then I don't see how you could possibly argue that it's anything but that.. It would actually seem ridiculous to me to argue that point.

I'm stunned. Really. That idiots grasp at little things such as using a computer generated representation of an event to make a point. Guess if a tree fell in a forest and nobody was there it wouldn't make a sound.

What seems ridiculous to me is us arguing any points regarding 5 lines of a transcript of something that seems to rely pretty heavily on video. I've seen parts of An Inconvenient Truth, but I don't recall it well enough to remember the part that they are referencing. Do you? Was there anything leading up to the two sentences they are quoting Al Gore as saying, or following what he said, where he speaks to what "could" happen or what "has" happened? I don't have any particular love for Gore, nor do I believe that everything in An Convenient Truth is absolute fact. I'm just saying that you're not getting "the big picture" by reading this transcript.

It is a fact, however, that ice shelves are breaking off and many glaciers that have been around a long time are melting. Is that a natural function of the Earth that happens cyclically? Probably. Does that mean that humans are having no impact on said cycle? Absolutely not. Are there plenty of good reasons, completely disregarding whether or not "Global Warming" or "Climate Change" are real and man-made, to embrace some of the principles that the so-called "Green" movement are putting forth? Hell yeah there are.

I'll never really understand why you guys act like people talking about "Global Warming" or "Climate Change" is a personal attack on you. It's a means to an end, and if that end leads to me being able to drive around without paying $4 per gallon of gas or clears up the smog in a major city, I'd say that end justifies the means. Even if it takes Al Gore showing clips of a Dennis Quaid movie without a disclaimer of "dramatization" on the screen.

QUOTED FOR TRUTH AND SUCHFORTH.

All of you fucking inbred yokel cretin motherfuckers think that every time "global warming" is mentioned that it's some kind of an affront to your moral standing, like someone just spit in your face. Is everything expressed in the doctrine of "Global Warming" true? NO, AND NO FUCKING BODY HAS EVER, EVER SAID ON THESE FORUMS THAT IT WAS. No one here looks up to Al Gore as some kind of demi-god.

There are many reasons to support the green movement, higher environmental awareness, and cleaner living, etc., and all that jazz. You fucking scumbag dicksock assholes are too caught up in your own personal shit against Al Gore and anyone with a democrat label to see that, and it's really pathetic.

You went off on an unnecessary tangent here. I have said at least a million times that I agree that we should do the shit. I have a problem with someone lying to me/stretching the truth to achieve that means and then calling me an idiot when I don't believe them. And that is precisely what is occurring. If you can't get people/companies on your side to do what needs to be done just because, then tough shit.

No sir, let me explain to you what is pathetic.

1- It is pathetic that you make a rabid post like this, and are wrong on every point you make.

2- It is pathetic that your reading comprehension is so terrible that you have somehow deducted what I bolded, because many people have said precisely that.

3- It is pathetic that you had to use more cuss words than even I do to get a point across.

4- It is pathetic that you ever thought that you might have something worthwhile to post here, and that you started posting.

5- It is pathetic that you continue to post, when you have contributed absolutely 0 (read: zero) since you started posting here besides a post calling me or one of a handful of other people a "dicksock", etc.

6- It is pathetic that you actually found a way to be more of a misinformed, arrogant prick than even nick ever dreamed of being,

and last but not least, it is most certainly pathetic that your mom decided to let daddy blow his load inside of her instead of swallowing you down whole like she should have.

Let me know if you need any clarification on any of that.

Who lied to you, Al Gore? I don't think he's the person who determines what is or isn't a CRISIS. I also don't think that fudging an image of what has happened, since it is actually happening, invalidates the message being presented. I believe the science is still out on whether or not we face a CRISIS, and unfortunately it's the type of thing that if it ends up being a CRISIS and we don't act to curtail it ahead of time, we're pretty much fucked.

So yeah, if it's for the greater good, it's okay if Al Gore forgot to mention that in his description of what is actually happening (see: Wilkins Ice Shelf, for starters) was, in fact, a recreation taken from a popular movie.

The sad part is you've been misled about the 'end' these 'means' are aiming at. It is not an 'end' that protects the environment, the people, or the sovereignty of nations. That's always been my problem with it... Whether or not man is responsible for any of the alleged impact, the solutions are not about fixing it.

This made me LOL HARD..

This thread made my day.

Back on topic. I dont hate 'global warming' fantasies because they are a spit in my face. It's the stupid shit the Gov't does in the name of combating it, that DIRECTLY effects my life by upping the cost of a fucking corn tortilla so we can use corn to power your latest gm peice of shit E85 crap box and forcing me to pay ten goddamn dollars for a lightbulb in 2012. When obviosly, people having food riots all over the world and mercury rotting my brain at home are sooooooooo much better than 12% co2 content as apposed to 10%.

It is Earth Day or something today and there is a little thing going on in the lobby of the building I work in. They were giving out those "green" light bulbs if you pledged to be "green". So I went there and told the guy that I owned a Hummer H2 and that I pledged to him that I would use "green" bulbs in it from now on.

The look on his face was priceless.

P.S.
I want to thank bagar~ for introducing me to the word "dicksock", I have actually decided to make it the word of the week.

Drolgin, you have to remember that buying eco friendly lightbulbs helps the terrorists and on top of that, for every lightbulb you buy, a terrorist kills an American.

Or something.

That's what movies are for, to give the slow kids in the class a chance at understanding the problem without having to go to all the trouble of reading.

I find it amusing that you think calving is such a frequent event that any documentary film maker could just fly helicopters around the pole until it happens. Or rather, because they don't, and you haven't seen it for yourself, it didn't happen.

Sorry, but I don't follow - is there a law about using them in the US? If so I understand people being concerned, I just wasn't aware of it.

If there's a government-funded campaign to entice/convince people, that's another matter. IMO that's no different than any "Buy American" campaign or similar. Less power consumption and less waste product = good for everyone in the long run.

I understand that some people are concerned that environmentalism has been hijacked by zealots (and to a point I can sympathise with their concern), but I don't see the problem in encouraging everyone to be more considerate in their energy usage. Of course, I grew up in the 70s and remember the endless energy-saving campaigns brought on by the oil crisis. My mom still scolds me for not turning off the light when I visit her...

That's a big part of it.

I don't buy the light bulbs or anything else that is labeled as "green" or "green friendly" because again, I don't like the tactics being used to market environmentalism to the masses. That and calling environmentally friendly things "green" is just annoying to me on a massive level.

I think on a subconscious level some of this also has to do with my recently found hatred for marketing tactics in general. I really hate almost every marketing tactic used to get people to buy anything from deodorant to food. I think they are stupid, corny, and it actually has the adverse effect on me - I have decided NOT to buy things because I think their marketing is corny. And yes, I can say with 100% certainty that I have never bought something because of an ad/commercial.

The City of Austin actually had a type of Instant Rebate program to entice people to buy them. I believe the bulbs ended up being cheaper than "regular" bulbs while it lasted too. I feel that Austin is probably a lot more progressive than other cities of a similar size in the US though. There is no actual law requiring people to switch, but standards for new homes in the area have been/are changing to be more strict in regards to "green" standards. The same has held true for modifications to existing homes as well.

I don't think that's true. I'm not saying you're a liar, I'm sure you feel that way. But I don't think there's a single person in the western world (the developed world, let's say) who has never - consciously or subconsciously - bought a product or an idea because of marketing strategy. I consider myself to be of above average intellect and education and like to believe I possess decent insight into the tools that marketing uses as well as a good analytical sense - and I know for a fact that I've still been swayed by commercials to choose one product over another.

In 2012 you will be required by law to only buy florescents. Incandescents will go the way of the do-do. By Gov't mandate. As in, you use a light'bulb' you goto jail.... well maybe not that bad, and I can still get them in Tiajuana, but the rest of you mooleys are fxxked.

Florescents suck ass because;

The light quality blows, make the bags under my eyes as black as death.

You cannot dim them. That fancy dimmer switch you bought to impress the ladies. Useless.

They have a warm up period. When you stumble into the baño in the middle of the night, you stub your toe because it took 2 - 3 seconds for the light to come on.

They fill them with deadly mercury, wich even though it's fun to play with, it'll burn a hole in your brain.

I agree, but check the pricing on LED lighting:

http://www.ccrane.com/lights/led-light-bulbs/index.aspx

They cost too much. LED eventually is the way to go though. Screw fluorescents (with apologies to Tesla).
