Myst MMORPG

Post by pyrella »

Pyrella - Illusionist - Leader of Ixtlan on Antonia Bayle

if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?

Considering Myst was one of the biggest selling PC games of all time, the chances of this being a bomb are pretty low.

It's not going to draw the same audience a EQ2 or SWG, but Myst is a very marketable franchise.

How do they expect to keep up with the mystery?

I mean Myst is all about solving puzzles....and people with EQ have a lot of playtime generally and will burn through those puzzles in a week.

Especially since it's on-line and people will just tell you the answers.

To suceed it's going to have to be drastically different from Myst. So different that Myst fans will hate it.

I'll point you in the direction of an even bigger selling title that is more on the minds of computer users today. See that green wall over there? That's no wall, it's all of The Sims Online boxes overrunning the EB. It sold like crap and Myst will do even worse.

Best-selling PC games for the week of December 22-28, 2002:

Rank / Title / Publisher / Average Price
1 / The Sims Deluxe / EA / $42
2 / The Sims: Unleashed / EA / $29
3 / Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets / EA / $29
4 / RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 / Infogrames / $28
5 / Zoo Tycoon / Microsoft / $28
6 / The Sims Online / EA / $46
7 / Age of Mythology / Microsoft / $44
8 / Zoo Tycoon: Marine Mania / Microsoft / $29
9 / Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos / Vivendi / $43
10 / The Sims: Hot Date / EA / $30

I suppose it's all relative, but I don't really think an online game being the 6th top selling PC game really could be considered 'selling like crap'.

EA has released figures that there are currently over 90k active accounts for The Sims Online. Over 12k copies of The Sims Online were sold in the first 2 days.

Heh, wasn't AO number 2 when it was released? Number 6 is a tank. More than half of those 90k accounts are carry overs from beta. The walls tell the story, they grossly overestimated demand for this thing.
Not to mention that the Sims franchise is intrinsically more apt to an online environment than a Myst one.
