So my wife wants an ipod touch. She's got a 4gb IPod Video at the moment. My question is, can you sell a used ipod on ebay? She's got about 1500 songs on it and was thinking about leaving those on there to help it's selling potential. Is there any sort of technological barriers, DRM etc that would prevent someone else from purchasing it and being able to use it fully? (Itunes compatibility etc?)
If we can sell her old ipod, I think I could actually afford to buy the touch, but if we can't then I may have to disappoint her.
You can sell the iPod. You "could" even leave the songs on it. Ebay may not allow it, and you may get the auction removed since that is one way that some people try to skirt copyright issues. There really isn't any reason to bother advertising that the songs are there, as they probably won't be able to do anything except play them until they're deleted from the iPod.
Yes, you can sell a used iPod. No, you can't sell it with songs loaded on it (legally).
Yes, someone would be able to listen to the music on that iPod indefinately until they tried to sync it with any other copy of iTunes except your wife's.
Also, the new 32g version is supposed to be releasing very soon. I would expect a price cut on the existing 8 and 16g models when that happens. Someone else may have to correct me here, as it may already be out. I'm not terribly interested in the iTouch atm so I don't keep up with it.
On the other hand why don't you just go find a pederast with a iTouch and steal it?
It's actually pretty easy to copy the songs from an ipod to your hard drive... You just have to NOT use Itunes.
Unless you want to run into potential legal issues/hassles/etc, you'll probably want to remove everything from the device. It's not worth the extra few bucks you might get from selling an ipod with music on it.
Aside from that, to fit 1500 songs on 4 gigs they would have to be at a pretty fucking horrible bitrate. I've got 1100 on my 8 gig and it's nearly full.

Sorry, your right... I was thinking it's a 4th Generation. It's actually a 30GB IPod Video. Selling for $140 if anyone is interested!!
