Lost Odyssey
Did a search and didn't see a thread specifically for this game yet. With the release being a few weeks away, I have to say I am really excited. I hadn't watched any videos or read anything on it really since the initial teaser video, but I watched some today and it looks awesome.
Could be the first great console rpg (imo) in years, we'l see.

Re: Lost Odyssey
For some reason, the reviewers are down on it after initially hyping it.
They referred to it as being "ninety nine nights" type bad. Maybe it's a mindless button smasher type game. I don't see any reviews on Metacritic yet.

I really don't take a single word I read from the critics to mean anything anymore, I think the last straw for me was the completely inaccurate and irresponsible reviews of Assassin's Creed.Winnow wrote:For some reason, the reviewers are down on it after initially hyping it.

Out of curiosity where did you read that? I haven't read too much on it besides a few things on IGN today.
Re: Lost Odyssey
One of the Podcasts I listen to weekly had a couple comments about the game. What's telling is that I've heard almost nothing about it and listen to quite a few gaming podcasts.
Then again, I haven't heard a peep about Final Fantasy XXIII in the past several months. Reviewers were going over games to look forward to in 2008 and not one mentioned FFXIII. I thought it strange. I wonder if this game will be delayed over two years.
Here's a forum discussing Lost Odyssey:

I haven't read it so don't know if there's any interesting details there.

Re: Lost Odyssey
Reviews aside, it will be nice to have a turn based RPG to play on the xbox. Is it still 4 dvds worth of game?

Re: Lost Odyssey
Yeah I just read through a bunch of the posts on the forum winnow linked, and it is four discs. There are a lot of people posting there that are already playing it (I assume they are from Japan since it's out there) and their comments seem to be mostly positive. The only real negative thing I read was about load times, which I guess can be annoying but I don't think it would be bad enough to wreck the game for me.Kluden wrote:Reviews aside, it will be nice to have a turn based RPG to play on the xbox. I am definitely going to play it, just because I have been desperately awaiting a good turn based RPG and there hasn't been one in forever.

Looks like the Japanese version was posted 42 days ago. It's 4 DVDs. Region coded so won't work for me.
Re: Lost Odyssey
Even hacked, it only works with U.S. region coded DVDs. The only way you can use Japanese region games is to hack a Japanese Xbox 360. Blue Dragon, and now Lost Odyssey, are the only two games that would have been nice to get early that were released in Japan before the U.S.
The DVD hack has been amazingly robust. It's been 2+ years and still going strong, even through all the forced dashboard updates that come on new games. Zero coasters with about 60 games having been burned. (that's about 450GB for the bandwidth hog police!)
It's not an easy hack although I think I actually saved my 360 by hacking it as I was able to apply a much better quality thermal paste and layer to the CPU and GPU, hopefully preventing the Red Ring of Death.

Re: Lost Odyssey
This game looks badass to me. I've watched about a dozen different videos and they all look impressive. I like the timing system in combat. It gives you something to try for to keep a bit more action in a turn based combat game. I think the visuals are stunning. The effects look cool and theres some cool blur/motion camera effects also. I have to say I think I'd get tired of watching the "run up" to the monsters EVERY time, but I can certainly live with that.
I personally like turn based RPG's. I know OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of people here didn't like Enchanted Arms, but I found it to be rather enjoyable. Certainly not a game for the ages or anything but definately worth the playtime.
I'm really hoping that Lost Odyssey lives up to the short bits that I've seen so far. The graphics are amazing, the sound seems amazing. Here's the hoping that the gameplay and storyline follow suit. I'll be picking this up the day it comes out!

Re: Lost Odyssey
Looking forward to this one for next week.Lost Odyssey is spread over four discs, a first for a 360 title. Don't let the number of discs scare you off. The game world is not enormous and even with every side quest you should be done within 50 hours. The extra discs are needed, apparently, because of the considerable amount of cutscenes. This is a story-heavy game that mixes beautiful CG and in-game cinematics.
While it won't be as good as Mass Effect, it should be better than Blue Dragon in the mold of a Final Fantasy type game.
Devil May Cry 4 has a buttload of Cutscenes and it's only on one DVD so I'm assuming this game is very movie-like if it needs 28GB of space and is only 50 hours long.

Being better than Mass Effect is subjective, but you are just being obnoxious as usual. Mass Effect was a very sub par game, I can almost assure you I will like this more than Mass Effect. I don't care whether you liked Mass Effect or not. Games are not guaranteed to be enjoyable to everyone the same as movies don't appeal to everyone. I've already played part of Mass Effect twice more, not for lame achievement points but because I enjoy the game.Funkmasterr wrote: Being better than Mass Effect is subjective, but you are just being obnoxious as usual. Mass Effect sold one of my friends on buying a 360 after playing a few hours of it. It's the type of game they'd been waiting for.

Re: Lost Odyssey
Dude, you just reinforced my point. You flat out said it was going to be better, not in your opinion, but that it was going to be better. It's all subjective. Personally every other person I know that bought the game (about 10 or so) that is not from VV was disappointed as much or more than I was. Lost Odyssey is the type of game I have been waiting for - a classic RPG that sticks to the basics instead of trying new shit and fucking it up royally like Mass Effect did.Winnow wrote:I don't care whether you liked Mass Effect or not. I can almost guarantee I will like Lost Odyssey, will just be really nice to have a true turn based RPG that isn't fully of fluffy bunnies...or shadows...

Re: Lost Odyssey
Disk size isn't that big a deal. I played Blue Dragon for quite a long time and never got passed the first DVD of the three. If you can't change a DVD every 15-12 hours, you're lazy!
Now, I'm not sure how the multi disks are handled. Hopefully you can pop in the extra dvds and they'll boot up from any one of them so you don't have to boot the first every time...don't know as Lost Odyssey will be the first game I'll probably get past the 1st DVD on (and there's only two games that have multi DVDs).
If they choose to release games both on Blu Ray/HD-DVD as well as multiple DVD-DL's in the future, I won't complain about it.

Blue Dragon was a disk change every 20 hours or so. And you could start the game on any of the disks. Exactly how the Final Fantasy games were handled really.

Looks very promising. I haven't played a Jap RPG since... I don't know when. I may give this one a try. Looks like most of Squaresoft made this game, even down to the sound designer! I'll wait and see what you all think before I purchase though.Animalor wrote:http://www.gametrailers.com/player/30356.html

I thought the demo for Eternal Sonata was pretty fun. It was far better than the Blue Dragon demo, that's for sure. ES had some really fun gameplay mixed in with the battles. Still, I never hear anyone talk about it, good or bad.

I was enjoying Eternal Sonata but eh mobs were a little too whacky and there was a bit too much clicking through text to keep me going. The visuals were outstanding though IMO.Fairweather Pure wrote:

eternal sonata sucked ass. i hammered through it dutifully but skipped the cinematics.... i just didn't have the patience for them. chapter length went from 3 hours to 30-45 minutes without them.

I know, I had mine all paid for and was going to go after work too, but gamestop said the same thing.. They really need to standardize releases, 75% of the time the date they list is the date it will be in the store, 25% of the time it's the date it will ship.Dregor Thule wrote:Mreh.. MREH!!... I reserved it at gamestop and got a card with a code to get an extra level/stage and weapon, will be interesting to see how fun the extra stuff is - that's why I always reserve stuff at gamestop, they are really good about giving you that stuff instead of keeping it for themselves like the employees do at a lot of other stores like best buy and circuit city.

Yeah, some were saying that it shipped today. It hasn't been posted on the newsgroups yet so I doubt too many stores will get them in today.Animalor wrote:I'm not expecting to get a copy till Wednesday or Thursday.

With the suprise fun games in Culdcept Saga and Witcher, I'm happily busy gaming away while waiting. Looking forward to this classic Japanese style turn based RPG though.

That is usually a deal that each store sets up individually. There can be differences in what you actually get though. I think it was City of Villains that had a different cape or helm based on where you bought the game. Some stores don't get any special unlockable items at all. It is very likely that the store didn't have anything "extra" TO give out.Funkmasterr wrote:I reserved it at gamestop and got a card with a code to get an extra level/stage and weapon, will be interesting to see how fun the extra stuff is - that's why I always reserve stuff at gamestop, they are really good about giving you that stuff instead of keeping it for themselves like the employees do at a lot of other stores like best buy and circuit city.

FFX-2, worth a playthrough?
I'm still working on Blue Dragon as well. I was almost done with that back when it came out and then my HDD died, 60 hours gone. =( I've been slowly working my way through it again with the increased difficulty DLC turned on. It's quite a bit more challenging that the first run through.
Re: Lost Odyssey
As much as I liked FFX, I didn't give FFX-2 a fair shot. I barely made it past the opening concert song intro. (so I could actually give the game a full review based on that but I'll refrain) I couldn't get into the whole outfit changing thing after really liking the the way skill advancement was handled in FFX. I'd probably go back and try it again but the jaggies would get to me.Animalor wrote:

If you're "muscling" through FFX, then FFX-2 probably won't be for you. It's got a "girly" feel to it, but underneath that crap there's a decent game. The dress sphere system was pretty interesting. Also trying to get a 100% clear of the game and the "best" ending is a fun challenge. I missed out on the damned Moogle suit because I only looked at an orb 2 times instead of 3 or something. Argh!

Re: Lost Odyssey
I played FFX almost straight through till I got to the Zanarkand ruins and then I just stopped. I played it for a few hours after that(which I can't really remember what happened and now I'm inside Sin). I did a bit of grinding last night and beat that encounter with Seymore so tonight I'll hopefully do the rest.Dregor Thule wrote:If you're "muscling" through FFX, then FFX-2 probably won't be for you. I played the intro chapter of FFX-2 the other evening and I thought it was interesting enough. I like what I've seen of the Dress Sphere system thus far so we'll see what ensues.
I can deal with the girly feel as long as the story is interesting.

Re: Lost Odyssey
I got my copy today, I haven't got to put a ton of time in (maybe 5 hours so far) but it is a lot of fun. Once I have got to dig into it more I will make a lengthier post, but so far I'm wondering how the fuck I'm supposed to beat the first boss (a dragon/griffin type thing), cause he is owning me hard, lol ! Time for bed though, I'll have to figure it out this weekend

Re: Lost Odyssey
My first impressions after five minutes of play (jk Miir, about 3 hours so far)
This is definitely a classic Japanese Final Fantasy type game. (which is a good thing for the most part!)
The game starts out a little slow. (not the huge initial battle that many have seen from YouTube videos months ago, but after that) You walk around solo for quite awhile as the main character "Kaim". I didn't immediately care much about the character but a few things help to flesh out his character. He can't remember his past but as you wander, he sees or dreams something that sparks a memory. These memories are quite long text stories. I've read through three of them and surprisingly they're pretty good. It's a little odd as it takes you out of the game for awhile as you read/click through all the text. There is excellent music and background sounds in the game which help a little. The fantasy readers out there will enjoy these short stories. It helps a lot in giving you a reason to like the main character as he's pretty quiet in the beginning. So far, all the dream stories have been sad but interesting.
While the beginning of the game isn't bad, expect a couple hours before the real game kicks in with other characters in your group and combat, etc.
So far, the two characters that have joined the group have been entertaining. Seth (a female) has the best natural looking breasts I've seen in one of these games. Janson is pretty good comedy relief which is much needed as Kaim is the silent/stoic type. Seth is pretty perky personality wise as well so things remain interesting.
As with all Final Fantasy type games, you click pots, kick cans, look behind posters to find hidden loot. This is one thing I don't find especially fun but it is what it is and if you played Blue Dragon, it's not quite as bad but close!
I was a little worried that the game would be a little dry in the story/character department but as mentioned earlier, that picks up a couple hours into the game.
The tutorial eases you into the game slowly.
I like the ring attack bonus thing which gives you something to do after selecting attack. It's not much but at least gives you a little bit of chance to do extra damage, etc and not jsut watch the battle. The combat in general seems pretty well done (in classic turn based style)
Small items show up on your characters when equipped. I equipped Kaim with some creature ID earrings but he looked kinda fem to begin with and the dangling/swaying earrings were a but too much so I moved those over to Seth!
Overall, I'm liking the game and look forward to playing it all weekend. Give the game a good two hours or so before passing judgment.

Re: Lost Odyssey
So I've played this for about 4 hours now. I have to say I'm enjoying it more and more.
The graphics are really nice. The monster animations are absolutely fantastic. It's one of my favorite things to see the different attacks, abilities they do. I fought the first boss and he was tough. Took me about 5 or 6 tries to kill him. The animation when he charges you for his Poison Claw is great. Seeing a huge dragon thing barreling at you really adds to the ouch factor when he hits. It just gives the combat a visceral feel that I really enjoy.
There is a decent amount of ramming trees, searching pots etc, but I've found it to be rather rewarding as I've gotten some decent items from them.
I like the skill link system so far as it lets your immortals gain more and more skills and allows for a certain amount of progression "choice" as well. The ring building and component finding is pretty cool also.
I've read a lot of bad stuff about loading times etc, but so far I haven't been bothered in the least by them.
The textual "dreams" are pretty awesome. They add a great bit of story and history to Kaim. Reading is by far the best medium for becoming involved in a story (i.e. books are always better than movies) and I really like the way they've included great sound effects as well as cool visual effects with the text. (The word "tear" in one of the storied slowly trickled down the screen like a tear would). Little touches like that are what really help to make a game immersive and I'm enjoying them so far!
If I HAD to make one complaint so far is that they do drag out the battle initiation sequences a bit. I wish they would cut to the monsters quicker instead of showing one of my characters, then the party as a whole, and THEN panning to the mobs to see what I'm fighting. I can see that getting a bit old after 30-50 hours of playtime.
I'm loving this so far and plan on really cracking out this weekend. More to follow after some more playtime!

Re: Lost Odyssey
I had this in my hand tonight but passed. I have too many other games to play right now si i just couldn't justify the purchase. Of course, that just means I'll buy it next week instead...
Overall, player reviews are ranking this pretty high. It seems to be my type of RPG, so it's only a matter of time before I take the plunge.

Re: Lost Odyssey
Just a great great games.
The 1k Year of Dreams segments are, imo, a lot more emotionally powerful than any FVM cutscene could have been in relaying Kaim's past.
This game truly is the work of the Sakaguchi that created Final Fantasy. Blue Dragon, while ok, was nowhere near the league of Lost Odyssey.

Re: Lost Odyssey
A question for the LO peeps.
While on my way up the hill to fight the first boss, I picked up an accessory that allowed me to see the mobs HPs. I lost to the Boss and decided to stop for the night without having a chance to save.
I've never found the Mob HP accessory again. I'm curious if these accessory drops are random or specific to certain locations. Do you recall where you picked up the Mob HP accessory? I want that thing. It's the most useful accessory IMO.

Re: Lost Odyssey
It was in the hut I believe. On the 2nd floor, you have to light the candle and the sparkly will appear under the bed afterwards. (There's another thing like this on the first floor, that may be the accessory as well).
You can go back there up until the Grand Staff segment.

I did return there but still couldn't find them (I checked all the spots in the Hut)Animalor wrote:It was in the hut I believe. I was able to pick up the Search Glasses in the weapons shop in Numara. (still disc 1)
This game has great body and facial expressions for all the characters. The eye movement, etc all mean something. While entering Numara, the three characters walk down the stairs completely differently. Jansen is quite a character.
One thing I didn't like was escaping the White Boa. It took me like 50 tries...drove me nuts as you have to restart from the beginning if you fail. Glad I'm passed that!
The other thing that I thought could be improved would be to have a save after the second boss. It's a loooong time before you can save the game.
This game is every bit as good as the FF series.
Re: Lost Odyssey
For anyone that's been stuck at one point for a long time, here's a very concise walk through for Lost Odyssey.
I don't like using them but if my enjoyment of a game is being held up by one stupid puzzle or something, It's nice to have.
I've used it once so far (security bots level on White Boa)
http://www.wikicheats.com/index.php/Los ... alkthrough
I keep waiting for the fist disk to end. I'm 20 hours in although I'm a completionist and also left the game playing to go to the store a few times or other things. I think I'm close (In the Sorcerer's Shrine)
Someone commented: disk 1 long, 2 and 3 shorter, 4 long as you want it to be.
Boss Mobs in this game are challenging. Good stuff!
If you have the Apprentice Earrings which grant the ability to use level 2 white/black magic, equip them on Cooke! She's much more useful with the ability to cast some black magic. It's a huge help in fights.

Re: Lost Odyssey
I am well into the second disk (I think I am probably about done with it actually) and I'm still liking it quite a bit. The stealth part winnow spoke of I thought was the only poor part of the game so far, and I think they probably added that in because they somehow feel like they have to make something "different" to interest people which is stupid, let the little Autistic and ADD kids keep playing Halo.
The mini games and side quests I have done have all been cool, and I intend on getting everything my first time through, although at this point I still haven't really had a point where I've just been able to go wherever I want to look for treasures, etc (which I expected, that usually comes later in the game.) I know there are some optional battles in the game and I am kind of debating picking up a guide, not to help me beat anything, but just because I don't want to miss anything on my first time through.
The game is nothing new, although anyone that is bothering to read this thread probably expects and appreciates that. However it is another solid hit for RPG fans in my mind, the Thousand Years of Dreams stories are VERY well done and do their job very well of making you understand and care about the characters.
I have yet to get two of the characters (assuming they are all listed in the booklet that came with the game) in my party, but one thing I will say about this game is that while all your characters do level independently, the issue you typically run into where you constantly need to juggle your characters in your party so others don't get behind is not so much of an issue, because when you put them in your party again they level back up to the point the rest of your party is relatively quick.
The only place this would set you back is learning skills with your immortals. I have been switching to a new skill to learn every time I master one with my immortals and I still don't have them all learned, so you could potentially get behind here.
At the sorceress's mansion on the second disk I got a little frustrated, because the random encounter enemies were very hard to take down, but I got past it without too much trouble
Overall I like it a lot so far, I'll continue to update.
