Getting a new PC

Anyone have any pre-configured systems they'd recommend in the $800-900ish dollar range? No need for a monitor, I can use my twin 17 inchers for now and upgrade later.

Has to be able to handle EQ2.

Try the Crysis forums. I heard on a podcast that they put together a PC that could play Crysis at full settings for $900

Opted for a Gateway Phenom box on sale at the local Circuit City (I know, how pedestrian, but building my own system is something I gave up on after my last experience).

The weak point is the video card, but it'll do for now (it's a 256MB Direct X 10 card, but entry level) and I can replace it as a birthday present in August.

Thanks Spang for the link. I did take a look at Cyber Power and while they had a respectable set of offerings, nothing really grabbed my fancy.

That's a very decent system.

For a video card upgrade, I'd recommend the new ATI 3870.
I couldn't be more impressed with this card.

Awesome deal man.. I have half a mind to pick that same system up.. for the price with that monitor as well that kicks ass. Did you pay for the extended warranty?

I actually haven't picked it up yet (just decided what to get), doing so tonight unless something comes up. I don't think I'll opt for the extended warranty.

I'm thinking of doing the same. It would be nice having a 22" display in conjunction with my 24. I could pass my old dell system (4.5 years old) on to the wife I guess.

It's still hard to justify since my time spent at my desk is the lowest it's been since I've been into computers.

Yeah, I totally hear ya. I play eq2 a bit now so my playtime is more than it has been in a few years, but I doubt I'll get much into any other games on the PC besides this. My tv is starting to go out and I can't afford to buy a TV and a new PC.. I just worry that if I bought the computer I would end up regretting getting it instead of a TV.. I don't know, can't decide.

I'm leaning a tad bit that way since I spend so much more time playing my 360.. I could just upgrade the ram and get a new HD on my existing PC for like 350 - 400 and be solid.. But that deal ash found kicks ass!

Got the new PC last night, stuck with the 22" monitor as I'd originally planned.

It's light years ahead of my old system. I spent most of the evening cleaning off the trial ware stuff, patching, installing office and then spent several hours trying to figure out why my two PCs couldn't see each other on the network. Eventually I found they could, but they couldn't browse to each other (except the Vista machine could see the XP one as a media share and play music from it... wtf?). I ended up just manually mapping the drives/shares and it worked fine.

Vista is, well, interesting. It's not as annoying as it was when I was working with my wife's new laptop last year, so either MS, Symantec or the vendors have something new or different in the config. I only got asked to confirm shit like half as much as I did a year ago (on same tasks too).

I still need to complete all the migration of my application data, but I got to try out EQ2 and it's phenomenal now (pun intended). It feels like a different game.

I would also support getting a new TV over a PC simply because TVs will last a hell of a lot longer than a PC. I went through at least 7 computers before my 36" picture tube finally died. I'm also a recent convert to console gaming > PC gaming.

Isn't it pathetic to blow a wad of cash on a new system and then spend hours taking off all the bullshit? I think my Dell had a good 15-20 active programs running the first time I fired it up. That's fucking bullshit. I really feel for the people that do not know how to clean that crap off when they get a new PC.

Dell puts very little shitware on their systems now.

There wasn't too much. My wife's HP had a lot more. I spent more time with the network browsing (as in browsing PCs in a workgroup, not Internet connectivity, which was seamless) issue since I had so much data to move.

Rant: I miss the old days when everything an application needed was saved in it's directory structure. Now we have apps putting shit off in obscure subdirectories. I know it's due to multiple account management and the desire to have one installation work for many accounts on a single box, but GOOD GOD it makes it difficult to migrate between machines. I wish there was a "Hey I'm the sole user and admin of this box, please simplify my directory structure" flag or a "Click here to make a package of all your user settings for this application (or computer!) for export to another system"

I would like to add, since I didn't notice it before because my old machine was on nearby that this thing is damn quiet (I keep thinking it's off when I walk in the room, even when it's not sleeping). The only time I notice any noise at all is when I fire up EQ2 and the fan kicks up to whisper level.
