Supreme Commander PC

I haven't played much of this game yet but the ability to use your 2nd monitor to display a zoomable/interactive map is badass and a huge help in an RTS game where you need to keep an eye on the entire battlefield. It works great. No issues playing with both monitors in 1920X1200.

More games need to take advantage of multiple monitors. Just about any game would benefit from having at least stats up on the second monitor. Stick all the 2D stuff on the second monitor in 3D games or use the second monitor for coop play etc.

I downloaded the demo for this, but haven't had a chance to install it as yet. I'm looking forward to it though as the graphics, from the screenshots I've seen, look phenomenal.

Got this yesterday. Nice graphics but I don't think I will play it long if the first mission is any indicator of fun value. It is pretty much a zerg fest. Whoever can build the most troops and swarm the other player first wins. I haven't really seen much of a storyline yet either in the campaign.

I played around with the tutorial a little bit but stopped pretty shortly. The tutorials are not well set up. You have to kind of pick one and then you sit and watch it play. I would rather jump right into the game and have it teach me new things as I go.

Yeah, it seemed kind of bland to me. The dual screen support is great though.

The tutorial was gimpy.

I'm not sure if something is wrong with my settings or what, but the graphics look terrible on my machine. Maybe it's time for an upgrade.

I saw this in stores the other day and noticed that it had the Games for Windows branding on it.

Apparently to get the branding you havta build your game to be compatible with the 360-style controller as well as mouse and keyboard.

Since I picked this up for 24$ cdn last week I may havta download the demo and give the controller on the PC a test drive.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xb ... greceiver/

I picked up the receiver so that I could use my 360 headset with WoW/Voip without having to buy a whole new headset for the PC. Works pretty well except I wish I could isolate voice only for the headset and game sounds through the PC speakers. The wireless 360 headset does a good job for voice but music and sound effects sound pretty shitty.

Can't have everything I guess.

This is the unofficial sequel to Total Annihilation right?

I mean, the sequel to the best RTS I've ever played can't suck 8)

I wants it but I need a better computer.

Actually, the follow-up to TA was TA: Kingdoms, which sucked worse than any other RTS game I have ever played in my life. It bankrupted Cavedog.

It was soooo bad, I remember them asking the public for what they would like to see changed to make it a good RTS. It was horrible to watch, and even worse to play.

Good lord that game sucked. I remember wantig it so bad, but not having any money. The day after it was released, I was at a friend of a friend's house, and they guy handed me the box and said "keep it". I couldn't believe he was just handing me this brand new game. Then, I got home and played it and immediately understood why.

I bought the gaming receiver yesterday, hooked it up, and SC doesn't work with it ;P.

I'm relatively sure that compatability with a 360 controller is not a requirement for getting the GFW brand.

The Games for Windows brand on games means four key things:

1) Quality. Games for Windows branded titles undergo extensive testing, and not just by the publisher. Microsoft also invests in quality checking each title to ensure they meet performance and reliability standards.

2) Compatibility. Games for Windows branded titles work on Windows XP and Windows Vista based PCs, including both 32 and 64 bit editions. Games for Windows titles that support controllers are also compatible with the Microsoft XBOX 360 controller for Windows, including the XBOX 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. They even support widescreen resolutions and more.

3) Safety features. You can be confident that any title carrying the Games for Windows brand will support the new parental controls and family settings features in Windows Vista.

4) Easy to Play. Games for Windows branded titles are easy to install, find and remove, especially in Windows Vista. Every Games for Windows title appears in the new Windows Vista Games Explorer (no more hunting around the start menu for that game you just installed). And Games for Windows branded titles all offer some form of “easy install”, putting you in the game more quickly.
Now if Supreme Commander doesn't support it then there's been a problem in the chain somewhere.

It works awesome on emulators however!

Apparently I don't play too many current games that can use one.

I was kinda hoping WoW or VG would support it just for moving around, but neither does.

Now I'm on a mission to find games that aren't racing, that can use a controller well - 360 wireless is first gamepad I've hooked up to the pc since a gravis 15 years ago.

I've been working from home today cause of a snowstorm outside and have been using my wireless 360 headset all day for voip calls. the sound on the 360 wireless headset sucks for music and whatnot but is fantastic over a voip client and chatting over MSN. I was REALLY surprised by it.

This little 20$ for the adapter was soo worth it.

I bought this game a couple of weeks ago. It's a slow burn to say the least. I don't mean that in a bad way, per say. It definately takes considerably longer to reach the upper tech trees compared to other RTS games.

The graphics are fun, and I love RTS games that have land, air, and sea units. This game delivers on many levels, but the battles usually take way more time than I can do in a single sitting. Staying true to it's TA roots, the 3 sides of tons of redundant units and mimics of all 3 factions abound throughout the tech trees. Once you crank out lvl 3 units, there's no reason to ever build a lvl 1 or 2 unit again.

It's still fun and I'm glad I bought it.

Except that a tech 2 artillery takes roughly 1/3 of the time and resources a tech 3 artillery does, so if you need a quick deterrent or if you're low on, say, mass - which I realize should never happen but always seems to happen anyway...

Tech 3 and experimental units are great and all, but they're so costly and time consuming to build that going for these isn't always a great idea. It's amazing what you can accomplish with a big tier 1 and tier 2 rush.

For instance, for the cost and time consumption of 5 siege assault bots (Titans) and 2 Demolishers, you could build:

5 tech2 artillery
2 tech2 mobile shield generator
16 tech2 tanks

and still have roughly 10000 energy left over. Add to this that this is without upgrading your land factories to tech 3 and you've saved a lot more resources and time.

It's been my experience that the game is really biased towards rushing, and if it has one major fault it's that early-game mistakes (such as doing your math a tiny bit wrong and running out of energy or mass in the first 5 minutes, having to wait for it to trickly up again) are punished so severely that it's extremely difficult to recover from them. Oh, and that memory leaks are so fucking abundant that you almost need to reboot your machine after every single skirmish.

I've just started playing this with a few EQ2 guildies. It is much more involved than most of the other RTS games I have played. The map zoom function takes a little getting used to. As noted above, the tutorials could have just been left out they were so useless. Patching to play on the gpgnet servers is a chore. The campaign seems to take forever, but this could be because I am not normally one to zerg through maps.

There was an expansion released that I never bought. That's weird because I'm an expansion junkie. I think it's the collector in me. There have been several RTS expansions that were released last year I never bought, which is a first for me since I've been playing RTS games.

I'll grab em in the cheapie bin though!

The expansion for this one isn't in the cheapie bin yet though. It was done so that it could be played without the original, but that causes issues with online play as well. I am thinking about grabbing it as well since it looks like we're playing every Wednesday.
