Sunshine
I went to a screening of this last night - It is already out in many areas, but not yet in Portland...hence screener..
This is Danny Boyle's new film....(Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Millions)
The basic idea is that Earth is doomed due to the Sun dying. A last ditch effort is to send a group of scientists and astronauts to the sun to deploy a big nuke in hopes to more or less recharge our closest star. The previous attempt 7 years previous had never been contacted. On their way, the crew of the new mission comes in contact with the other thought to be lost ship. Chaos ensues.
This reminded me quite abit of Event Horizon, but with Boyle's nice artisic touches. Not bad--had flaws, but a solid project, imo.

Re: Sunshine
It was a solid and promising film during the first 2/3rds, then it suddenly took a left turn straight into all the stereotypical movie trappings of every other generic film out there. Much like 28 Days Later, it had such vision and promise at the start, but it all goes out the window in the 3rd act. Also, just like 28 Days later, it's hard to put a bad rating on the entire film just because the last part was so far off base. I mean, the start of both films were done very well and by the time things fall apart in the final act, you like the characters enough that you can put up with it.
One of these days, he'll make an entire movie that's great instead of just the first 2 acts. I like his concepts though, and I do look forward to his future projects.

Re: Sunshine
I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. Yes, there were some aspects that were pretty derivative, but for the most part is was worth the ticket price.
Makora
Too often it seems it is the peaceful and innocent who are slaughtered. In this a lesson may be found that it may not be prudential to be either too peaceful or too innocent. One does not survive with wolves by becoming a sheep.

Re: Sunshine
I just couldn't get into this movie. But I don't like the 'horror genre' in general. I didn't know really anything about this movie so went into it thinking it was a pure science fiction movie. If it would have been just that I probably would have liked it overall. Could have done without the 'fifth crew member'
4/10
(PS - I liked Millions)

Re: Sunshine
Yeah I see your perspective--it did go a bit 'Event Horizon' there towards the end (and in the middle).
And yeah, Millions was pretty cool.

Re: Sunshine
For some reason, the DVD experiance was much better for me. I would raise my overall liking of the movie significantly after watching this in the comfort of my own home. I believe the comparisons to Event Horizon are valid in that they both did an excellent job of creating the feeling of complete and utter isolation. So, both films had fantastic set ups, but failed a bit in thier endings.
It certianly is a beautiful movie to watch. Those space views of the ship and sun are extremely well done.
This film makes me want to see a modern remake of Silent Runnings. I think it would mesh well with the likes of Sunshine and even Solaris (a very underrated sci fi film - original and remake).
I highly reccommend Sunshine. It was certianly entertaining despite the flaws.

Be sure to post your review once you watch it!Boogahz wrote:I forgot to add this to my Netflix queue as well. Thanks for the update, as it reminded me to throw it in there!
It's a shame that this movie had a limited release with little to no advertising. Despite it's flaws, it was still better than both Spiderman 3 and Pirates 3. As far as Sci Fi movies go, it was one of the best of last year. It does harken back to the greats (2001, Alien, ect), but it finds it's own legs to stand on. If you're not a huge movie buff and don't know the influence material to a "T", it would probably be more enjoyable. For instance, my wife thought it was quite an original flick and liked it. Obviously, she's not a big fan of the genre because a great deal had been done before.
Re: Sunshine
My review stands. It was a decent movie. For the first 75%. It lost it at the end. I'm actually not sure I could say it was better than Spiderman 3. Not really sure I can say it was worse either.

Re: Sunshine
I really enjoyed the first three quarters of the movie.
The last quarter (including the end) was really quite ridiculous.

Re: Sunshine
I kind of liked the last 5 minutes or so, but agree that it was a MUCH better movie the first 3/4.

Re: Sunshine
agreed. 3/4 was fantastic, 1/4 made me giggly and sad at the same time.
