Games for Windows Live
Anyone used this at all? I was trying to find some solid info about it, but couldn't find much. I saw mention of achievements, but no idea what games give achievements, if any. I have Bioshock and Company of Heroes as far as games I figured might tie into it.

Re: Games for Windows Live
The only one I picked up was ShadowRun. It seems like it just lets you get the same achievements that you would earn playing on an Xbox 360.

Re: Games for Windows Live
The only game I've seen where a Gold Live membership is pretty much required is Shadowrun.
The last few times I've tried to play Shadowrun with my Silver (free) Live membership I couldn't find a single public game to connect to.
Windows Live killed that game for PC.
It's a really good game but nobody is going to play $10 a month for an online shooter.
I've seen a number of Games for Windows that don't require a Gold account to receive achievements.

Re: Games for Windows Live
I think maybe you're confusing the Games for Windows and Windows/Xbox Live.Dregor Thule wrote:Anyone used this at all? I was trying to find some solid info about it, but couldn't find much. Games for Windows is just the branding/marketing standard they are trying to puch for PC games.
Both COH and Bioshock are Games for Windows but neither of them require or even use Windows Live... COH uses Relic's own Relic Online service for multiplayer.
Games for Windows = good idea
Windows Live = stupiud idea

Re: Games for Windows Live
Games for Windows doesn't even require reveloppers to implement the Gamertag solution that Microsoft is using with Xbox Live.
Here are the requirements to be able to have the Games for Windows branding on your game..

Re: Games for Windows Live
I think windows live is a good idea for the same reason xbox live is. To have access to all of your friends no matter what game they are playing, invite them to games, get invites, etc etc etc. I think that before it's worth paying for there will definitely need to be more titles for it, but it's new, give it a break. I personally think that having the company that develops the game make the online service and to continue doing it the way it's been done up till now is inefficient and retarded.miir wrote:I think maybe you're confusing the Games for Windows and Windows/Xbox Live.Dregor Thule wrote:Anyone used this at all? Re: Games for Windows Live
People already have a PC. There are other applications that allow you to "have access to all your friends no matter what game they are playing". It's called Instant Messaging. I don't see invites as something most people would care to spend $10 a month for.Funkmasterr wrote:I think windows live is a good idea for the same reason xbox live is. I'm not even saying it's a bad (or good) idea. It's just not something I have any particular care about.

Re: Games for Windows Live
Yeah... I love Xbox Live on the 360, but can't see any real reason for it on the PC.
I agree that having each developer create their own online service is kind of shitty since you could wind up with a great game and a horrible online service... But, it should be the developers paying for the online service, not the customers, since they saved the cost of writing their own.

I understand that you can instant message on the PC, however you can't see what games your friends are playing, compare achievements, go to leaderboards, invite them to play a game, have a consistent reliable service for playing all of your games online, etc, etc that you get with xbox live. I can see the value in this on a PC and would be something I would be more than happy to pay 10 a month for if I played anything other than EQ2 on my pc.

Re: Games for Windows Live
I haven't toyed with the Steam Community but aren't they doing something very similar to Xbox Live for the PC?
Re:
xfire for the 'what friends are playing' aspect. And lets you join with one click so no need for an invite.Funkmasterr wrote:I understand that you can instant message on the PC, however you can't see what games your friends are playing, compare achievements, go to leaderboards, invite them to play a game, have a consistent reliable service for playing all of your games online, etc, etc that you get with xbox live. Xfire worked great when I used it several years ago. Haven't done much PC gaming in the last few years.Aslanna wrote:xfire for the 'what friends are playing' aspect. Re: Re:
I've never tried that, I just know that xbox live kicks the shit out of anything like it I've ever used - and if it were to work similar in a similar format on the pc I would prefer to stick with it, and would be glad to pay.Aslanna wrote:xfire for the 'what friends are playing' aspect. Re: Games for Windows Live
Well, the Games for Windows and Games for Windows Live are two different "tags" you will see on a game. I believe that the two you mention having are Games for Windows.
*Edit* Added link for the Games for Windows specifics...and yes, I realize the thread itself is about Games for Windows Live.
