Austin Humane Society trims fee to adopt black animals today
Such pets tend to stay at shelters longer, spokeswoman says.

If you're pawing through what's on sale today, consider something with four feet. Today from noon to 7 p.m. you can adopt a dog or a cat from the Austin Humane Society for one-third of the usual fee if the animal is black or has some black in it.
This means the adoption fee is $35 instead of the usual $100 to $150 fee.
Black animals tend to stay at shelters longer because they are less noticeable than lighter-colored animals, said Leslie Coons, a spokeswoman for the Austin Humane Society.
"Sometimes people have a phobia that if they get a black cat it means bad luck," Coons said.
The Austin Humane Society at 124 W. Anderson Lane has lots of black animals available for adoption including an Australian cattle dog, a Welsh corgi, Pembroke mix, an Australian kelpie, a border collie, a boxer and a chow mix, she said.
Other dogs with black that are available for adoption include a German shepherd mix, a miniature pinscher mix, a pointer mix, a Labrador retriever, a Catahoula leopard dog and a Shar-Pei. Black cats available include long hair, medium and short hair mixes as well as some Siamese mixes.
I thought that the black animals being left in the shelters was odd when I adopted my dog from the SPCA around four years ago. She has black on one side and black spots on grey on the other. The other dog rescued with her was totally black. They had been there for a couple months before getting adopted on the same day.
