Super Mario Galaxy
So I picked this up on Tuesday and played it for a couple of hours that night, I haven't played it since then (because of assassin's creed) but my girlfriend has been playing it a ton. It is a really damn fun game, and if you have a Wii you should most certainly own it.
I got a little bit dizzy at first running around the smaller planets, mainly due to camera angles I think, but I got used to it pretty quick. The controls actually work perfectly for the game, nothing has seemed to be awkward at all, and the levels (planets) have a ton of variety to them.
Mario adds a bunch of suits to his arsenal, such as the bee suit (allows you to buzz around like a bee, and stick to certain walls), the spring suit, rainbow suit (like having star power in previous games), suits that allow him to freeze water to walk across it, etc etc.
They made it so it is a bit of a challenge (sure it will get tougher later in the game) but no levels are too difficult, so the fun factor isn't wrecked. I haven't played through a lot of the game so I will say more later when I have, but I just wanted to highly recommend this to anyone with a Wii!

We picked up this game a few days ago. I'm not that far into it yet - just finished the 1st galaxy. I'm really enjoying it so far!

I too can personally give this a thumbs up in the Keep-Your-Girlfriend-Busy category

Re: Super Mario Galaxy
I gave this a go during the wekend. So far it's pretty fun. I thought the bee mario was pretty clever but hadn't made it too far past that. People give the Wii crap for the graphics, but other than the jaggies (which aren't too bad when you don't look for them) I think the graphics are quite good for what it is. I was actually a bit surprised since they were better than I thought they'd be. At no point have I said "Great game.. But sure wish the graphics were as good as the 360 or PS3".
Anyway, as mentioned in one of the other threads, it has a 97 on Metacritic which is qite good. If you own a Wii this is pretty much a 'must get' and worth dusting off the Wii if you haven't used it in awhile.
(Oh, looks like it went up a point. 98 now!)

Re: Super Mario Galaxy
I got this for Christmas, and I swear, I'm exhausted from all the fantastic games I played in the last 3 months.
Orange Box, Persona 3, Bioshock, Dreamfall... and now Galaxy might be just about the most straight-up fun of them all.
If people don't start releasing some total shit soon, I'm going to be spoiled for life.

I wish I could say that for games like FFXII. I wonder if a game like that would look better on the Wii than the PS2. Do you play the Wii games on your 24" Dell or a different monitor/TV?Aslanna wrote:At no point have I said "Great game.. But sure wish the graphics were as good as the 360 or PS3".
Speculation is that there will be a new Wii with HD/Component capability by next fall. I'll get one when that happens.

Starting playing this game yesterday and I am 32 stars in. I have loved everything so far.
There are already component cables for it...do you mean it's going to do more than 480p next fall?Speculation is that there will be a new Wii with HD/Component capability by next fall.

720p output/games is what I meant. The chips will be dirt cheap by then so the price can remain the same.

Sweet, hopefully they'll do something better for the audio too.Winnow wrote: 720p output/games is what I meant. The chips will be dirt cheap by then so the price can remain the same.

Go play The Longest Journey again since you liked Dreamfall?Niffoni wrote:I got this for Christmas, and I swear, I'm exhausted from all the fantastic games I played in the last 3 months.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy
I am at a loss for words. I almost feel like I should be slain for my blasphemy.
I finally got around to playing this game tonight.
I hate it. It's terrible. It's the worst Mario game I've ever played. Mario controls "like a cow in a supermarket trolly" as Yahtzee would put it. Collision detection fails on almost every enemy and obstacle. Platforming requires a calculator, protractor, and painstaking thumbpad-tapping to get the fat fucker anywhere NEAR where he needs to be. Every puzzle has some "ha ha, got you" element to it that insta-kills you the first time because there was no way to anticipate it.
This is the worst fucking game I've played in almost a year. I swore after the tutorial galaxy I'd give it one more hour. I made it 30 minutes. I hated every second.
Someone tell me I'm missing something. There must be a way to control the camera, or activate a faster sprint, or turn on midair control. Better yet, tell me I've just completely forgotten how to platform. Because I swear I seem to recall Mario games were actually fun at some point, and I really REALLY want to be wrong here.

I don't know what to tell you.. I found it fun. But if you didn't that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you. Some people just don't like certain things!

Sounds eerily similar to the original Super Mario Brothers game! Mario games have always required lots of replays to get the patterns down. You either dig it or you don't! Nothing wrong with not digging it.Niffoni wrote: requires a calculator, protractor, and painstaking thumbpad-tapping to get the fucker anywhere NEAR where he needs to be.
