BBC DJ apologizes for racial remark

The BBC apologised Wednesday after a top national radio presenter triggered protests by saying she could not see black people in the dark.

Radio 2 DJ Sarah Kennedy made the comment when, during a discussion about winter road conditions on her morning show, she explained how she had almost run over a pedestrian.

"You know what happened to me yesterday? It was this black guy. It's lucky he opened his mouth to yawn or do something and I saw him. He was wearing a black hat, black clothes and he was just invisible," she said.

Listeners used BBC message boards to voice anger at the remark. "This is just one in a long line of irresponsible remarks from Sarah Kennedy, but the BBC don't have a problem with her," one said.

Some defended her. "Leaving aside the fact she said 'until he opened his mouth', she was making a point that too many pedestrians (and I include myself in that) wear dark clothing at night," said another.

But the BBC said sorry. "We apologise for any offence given and have spoken to Sarah Kennedy," said a spokesman.

Earlier this year Kennedy, 57, raised eyebrows by slurring her words during a show.

She notably offered to send "panties" to troops in Afghanistan and referred to the Princess of Wales wearing a "pink polka blot" dress. The BBC said she had a sore throat at the time.
She's lucky she got off that easy... it's a lot funnier than the 'nappy headed hoes' incident.

Are we really above pointing out that a black person wearing all black is pretty much invisible when it's pitch 'black' out?

Was it really a racially charged comment, or was it just a true statement for that situation?

I think her comment was 100 times more racial than Imus'.

I don't see anything wrong with the statement. If you're suggesting that (during night) it's just as easy to spot a black guy in nothing but black attire as it is to spot some black guy in *not* black attire (let's say... orange!?), well, you're wrong. Or you have weird eyes.
Do unto others what has been done to you.

I don't have a problem with what she said at all. There's tons of comedy in truth.

Then you're a douche nozzle. Well, actually you're a troll, but you're still a douche nozzle.

Being black in dark clothing means the only easily visible parts of you at night are your eyes, teeth, and palms. This is simple fact, but it's not PC to say it.

Being black and female however does not mean you either have a) a nappy head, b) are a ho. In fact, Imus' remark was not only racist but libellous.

Wrong. They did have nappy heads and were considered ho's as far as current ghetto vernacular goes. His remark was neither racist nor libellous. Not one single person who is an Imus listener thought anything bad about those women after hearing his joke. They listen because they enjoy his sense of humor. Outside listeners, who were made aware of his joke, were the ones who took it to the media and made sure enough people who "offended" that he got fired. You are who the media targets. You are pathetic.

It's a retarded thing to say. She didn't need to pull it out of her arse whilst she spewed her usual crap all over the airwaves.

People pay too much attention to race. We should live in a world where you can say "a black person wearing black clothing is difficult to see at night" and not worry.

That's what makes it funny. Not laugh out loud funny....just funny. Just because you don't find it funny, doesn't mean it isn't. It just means you find other things funny.

you can't possibly be serious. Now someone has to be from a ghetto to make a jokes about ghettos? I sure hope you don't ever step foot into a comedy club, your entire insides will be bursting through what must be the thinest skin in human history
