Fido - Zombie movie greatness
What a wonderful surprise of a movie.
The entire background of the movie is that it's the 1950's, years ofter the zombie wars. Zombies have been "tamed" with collars that clamp around thier necks that make them passive. All this is explained in the beginning of the movie with one of those black and white public service anouncment reel to reel films shown to an elementary school class, afterwhich the class heads out for target practice where they shoot cutouts of little zombie children.
At the very heart of the film, it's "a boy and his dog" type of film, except it's his zombie instead of a dog.
The film is beautifully cast and shot, with Carrie-Anne Moss as the perfect 50's mother. The colors are vibrent with pastels and the whitest whites, making the film pop out of the screen and helping cement the perfect setting of the 50's. At times it almost has a Burton-esque quality.
Overall, I thought it was great. The movie is sprinkled with laughs and just the right amount of gore. Such a simple concept was pulled off perfectly. It's so different than any other zombie movie out there, yet deserves a spot amoung the greats of the genre.
It's a really fun flick that I highly recommend.

Man, I was way off on my collection size. I just bought dvd profiler and added my entire collection. I have 506 (with some being on loan right now). I did notice that all boxed sets count as 1 moive for the collection's sake. That means that things like the star wars boxed set and indiana jones only count as one dvd. That would probably add another 20ish films, but I was still waaaaay off on my count. Not sure how that happened.

Just made an Amazon order for:
Fido - DVD
The Shining - HD-DVD
A Clockwork Orange - HD-DVD
Looking forward to seeing Fido! Also looking forward to seeing how well the remasters worked out for the other two films.

Re: Fido - Zombie movie greatness
I'm interested to hear your review on this version the shining. It's a widescreen presentation, and Kubrick planned and shot the movie in full frame. So, this presentation is not at all what he wanted the viewer to see. Given how anal he was about every tiny aspect of his shooting, I'm curious what impact the widescreen will have.
I already have the previous version and I'm perfectly happy with it and don't want to re-purchase. I've only done that with a select few films, and only because of the addition of extra footage/scenes to the actual movie itself. Donnie Darko and the LotR trilogy are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head. Although the latest Dune DVD has been in my hand once or twice.
There's a really nice Close Encounters set coming out this Tuesday that makes me glad I waited to buy that movie or else I would likely have 2 of those.

Re: Fido - Zombie movie greatness
Yeah, that has been my issue with Kubrick transfers in the past. Both of these HD-DVD formats are in the following format:
FedEx delivered yesterday, yay!
1080P HD 16X9 1.85:1
Dolby trueHD: english 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus - English 5.1, French 5.1, Spanish 5.1 w/ subs in Eng, Fr, Spa
I did watch the opening steadicam crane shot from The Shining and it was gorgeous! Also, the 'Dies Iere'(sp) orchestral bit really came through well without taking away from the overall subtle yet marvelous opening.
REALLY looking forward to watching Fido!

Re: Fido - Zombie movie greatness
Ah, so I finally got around to popping this one into the player. Actually, with the holidays and whatnot, I had forgotten all about it.
First off, WOW! What a wonderful movie. I agree with Fair in that it is wonderfully shot--fucking amazing colors. Fantastic acting (and shuffling). A simple story that was pulled off perfectly. This is one of the better DVD buys I have made in years. I am glad to see filmmakers seeing things from the zombie perspective--they are so unloved.
Carrie-Anne Moss looked beautiful to boot.
10/10 (haven't seen extras, but the film alone was just about as good as you can get)
edit: Thanks Fair!!!

I'm very happy to hear you liked it. My dad just borrowed my copy last night and I'm eager to hear his opinion. He's an old school zombie movie freak.

Re: Fido - Zombie movie greatness
Rarely has a film made me so giddy, I'll tell ya that much. I used to stay abreast of the comings and goings of "horror" flicks, as one can tell from my past 'upcoming' posts in this forum. However, toil and downright laziness had sapped me of almost all film enjoyment--hell, it is a phased approach. Fido struck a pure joy though, and I look forward to sharing the dvd with friends.
Hell, maybe I will get around to watching those shiny new HD-DVD versions of Kubrick's work at some point....and maybe even write appropriate reviews...
Back to the zombie sub-genre:
What ever happened to the remastering of Night of the Living Dead? 'Dawn and 'Day had been boxed and shipped years ago, but I see no special ed' for 'Night. Of course there are a myriad of versions, but no specialomgdeluxewtf version. (and I do not want to see the '3D' version.) For those that do not have, yet are fans....do check out the Dawn of the Dead spec-ed that has all 3 cuts...fucking wonderful.
And I have massive nervis for the upcoming 'Diary of the Dead' by Romero....weeee
...and back to Fido...if you are a zombie nut (like me), appreciate the art of film or just enjoy something different (and hilarious) do check out Fido--it will be well worth your time.
