Best Romantic Movies that Guys Love

Post by Lalanae »

Any movies with a romantic story that got to you guys?

Some examples I KNOW guys like (unless they are meatheads, in which case I'm not really interested in their opinions anyway!):

(2) Garden State

Usually I at least prefer the illusion of it being some other type of movie, with the romance aspect sneaking up on me. I'm sure there are a number of movies that were mostly romantic that I enjoyed (as I like everything), that I can't currently think of, but I'll keep working on it.

One that may or may not count:

The Princess Bride? It was sort of romantic, and a movie that EVERYONE loves.

And True Romance isn't really romantic, but it sort of is. That's one of my all-time favorites.

Does Lost in Translation count?

I would say Meet Joe Black just because that hit by car scene had me in tears laughing.

Oh, and I'll give a nod to Cruel Intentions.

And Closer is also really (fucked up) good.

I don't remember a lot about Meet Joe Black, but I liked that and it was touching. I think I almost teared up at one point.

I have several. I enjoy a good love story, as long as it isn't the entire point of the movie.

Forrest Gump - The love story in this is a vital as anything else in the movie. When he is standing over Jenny's grave saying "You died on a Saturday morning..." Damn. It still chokes me up every time I see it.

Titanic - I thought the love story was great. It enhanced the rest of the film a great deal.

As Good as it Gets - Helen Hunt is great in this. This had me hooked from beginning to end.

Groundhog Day - At it's core, it's just a guy trying to make a woman fall in love with him.

Ghost - I think it still holds up pretty well. It's a pretty powerful love story.

I also agree with Sylvus about movies that trick me with an enjoyable love story thrown in. There have been some surprising and entertaining love stories out there.

Legends of the Fall - What can I say? I loved it.

Far and Away - My girlfriend in high school had to DRAG me to this in the theater. The ads didn't show anything about goddamn bare knuckle boxing or a raceing towards land in the west. I think I ended up liking it more than her!

Finally, my favorite romantic movie of all time...

Amelie - It's a feast for the eyes. It's quirky, fun, and deeply sincere. I love this movie.

Good Will Hunting is slightly romantic and certainly has a few emotional moments. I'd say women would probably like to watch that movie with their men.

I'm not a big movie guy and thus don't have a particularly useful opinion, but I'll second:

Princess Bride
Forrest Gump
As Good as it Gets

Plenty of others I'm sure are good but I haven't seen.

I have to disagree with Closer. It's a good movie, sure, but I don't know if it's fair to call it 'romantic.' The whole movie displays an incredibly fucked up and nonromantic view of sex. It's a movie about sex and sexual relationships, but about romance?

I enjoyed The Cutting Edge about the injured Hockey Player being talked into becoming a pairs figure skater. That was "romantic" yet had enough manly elements to qualify as a good movie without losing "man-show cred"

I always liked the original 1968 Romeo and Juliet movie as well. Saw it enough in high school. Maybe it was just better than having to listen to a lecture.

Lost in Translation, definitely. Cruel Intentions and Closer weren't romantic at all though. :P

For my own personal twist on the romantic movie - High Fidelity.

Jersey Girl
The Wedding Singer
Chasing Amy
Leaving Las Vegas
Hustle and Flow

These might not count...

There's Something About Mary
Ocean's 11
Spaceballs

And I'll second these...

Good Will Hunting
Forrest Gump
The Princess Bride
Titanic

Others may make my list but I haven't seen them yet.

There are very few movies that make me sad, let alone make me cry - but this movie made me cry like a little baby, I mean jesus, they don't even wait 5 minutes to make the movie sad as hell!

Seconding Amelie and High Fidelity (which also has the lovely Iben Hjejle starring, a bonus!). Four Weddings and a Funeral is one I could watch again and again - and I absolutely loathe Andie McDowell. Somehow it works though...

Older movies:
On Golden Pond (I'm a sucker for Katherine Hepburn, even at age 70)
Roman Holiday
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Some Like It Hot.

I like old movies as well but Monroe was a horrible actress. her airhead voice got old fast and after playing the dumb blonde for a movie or two, she had no acting skills to fall back on. Great Pinup model though and cult icon like Elvis and his movies.

Here's a few that were better (actresses) than Monroe:

Ava Gardner
Vivien Leigh
Hedy Lamarr
Rita Hayworth
Lana Turner
Ginger Rogers
Ingrid Bergman
Susan Hayward
Betty Grable
Veronica Lake
Katharine Hepburn
Lauren Bacall
Ann Sheridan
Jane Wyman
Judy Garland
Grace Kelly
Audrey Hepburn
Sophia Loren

Forrest Gump
As Good as it Gets
Groundhog Day
Good ones as well, I really liked as good as it gets.

Bicentennial Man also, though the book was much better. Another tear jerker.

i forgot who said Return to Me, but that's a great movie

Sense and Sensibility anyone?

sometimes i get really plowed and turn on these movies and turn into a blubbering idiot. haha it's fun sometimes. maybe a reflection of my lonliness or inability to show emotion except when i'm drunk and alone, but I dont care :)

it all stems from this one time i was faking sick from high school or something and The Wrath of Khan came on. When Spock died I started looking around the room looking to see if anyone was watching. Of course I was home alone, so I burst into a fit of tears and sobs.

WHY SPOCK WHY!?

then i started laughing and thought "well that was hilarious and fun."

heh what a great movie
