Fatass forced to buy second ticket

Post by Zaelath »

Not only is this old news (he's apparently lost some weight from the 430 he was, though still looks massive in the video), but I don't know *how* it's news.

Too Fat? Southwest Airlines Forces Hefty Frequent Flier to Buy Two Seats: http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=5627

Hell, I was sat next to a huge fatty on a flight once and I was pissed off she wasn't made to buy two tickets; if you can't sit in your seat in such a way that your fat doesn't flow over the arm rest and touch me, you need two seats.

Couldn't agree with you more. On a kind of similar note, a guy at work was telling me about his bus ride to work today. He was sitting behind this lady who had set her bag on the seat next to her, some other woman got on the bus and walked up to the lady and in all seriousness asked her "did you pay for two seats?". Couldn't believe it !

so does that mean you buy a ticket for the amount of space you are going to take up?

ie, could 2 really skinny people share a seat?, or how about 2 normal people, one sitting on the others lap.

i dont think you should be able to charge fat people for 2 tickets unless it goes both ways, and skinny people can share a seat

What if you just want two seats to stretch out? Could you also buy the seat in front of yours to keep anyone from laying in your lap?

Kriista don't be a dumbass. Unless you are the olsen twins, two people will never fit in a single seat. Sitting on laps is illegal in cars (in some states). Why would they allow you to do it on an airplane? They do allow kids and infants to share a seat with their parents. I have a almost-three year old and I bought him his own seat. If you are fat enough for two people (250-300 lbs?) then you should be forced to buy two seats. I don't want to be stuck to some other person's fat and stinky rolls pressing into my personal space for several hours.

I was on a flight a couple weeks ago, and a larger man, 350+ lbs at least, stopped at the front of the plane and demanded a better seat, saying he wouldnt fit in the one they assigned him near the bulkhead.
He was acting like it was the airlines fault the seats didn't fit him.
Maybe that's how he dealt with his embarassment?
With our growing population I wonder if they should start installing 'plus size seats' on planes.

I hope you aren't serious.. Someone fat spilling into your seat is disgusting, and intrusive - making whatever point you are trying to make irrelevant.

I'd pay an anorexic $50 to swap seats with me if I was next to that fat guy.

Both of these earn an FTW for the record... I lol'd hard.

On the topic here, I totally agree with the airlines... If you can't fit in one seat without flowing onto someone else's lap, you need to buy two tickets...

And for the record, also totally against putting "plus-sized" seats on an airplane...

They already have them in first class, on airlines that don't do cattle car seating anyway.

I've got a bit of empathy for the morbidly obese, I don't think most of them are happy with the state they've placed themselves in. On the same token, I don't feel their poor choices should impact anyone else.

I don't feel bad for them in any way. There is not a single person in this country that cannot lose weight in way way or another, be it working out or by a surgical procedure (not having insurance/not being able to afford the operation is not even an excuse, there are ways for anyone to get the operation if they truly need it.) See I wouldnt go so far as this one here... In some aspects I do feel they're not happy with their current state of living. But at the same time it angers me to no end when they get up on their (reinforced) soap box and start preaching that they deserve special treatment. Meanwhile they come in to work on a friday when the company does bagel day and proceed to suck down three of them before the morning meeting is even over.

So to summarize, I'm 50/50... I believe some aren't happy with their current health situation but on the other hand I have no pity for the ones who do nothing to try and fix it... FFS just take a fucking walk around the block every day.. thats all it takes!

Do you know how much it costs to become surgically skinnier? Not everybody can do it, Funk.

That said, fat people that are offended when other people point out the fact that their weight is flowing in all odd directions and impeding on personal comfort should die a terrible, lonely and smelly death. Or at least be acceptant of their need to purchase two seats and take it easy on the #1 with no onions.

i dont think its an issue of obesity, as im sure really tall people run into problems on planes as well.

its that when you buy a ticket, your paying for transport of a person, not for a specific amount of space

its unfortunate to get sat next to a really fat person, or a smelly person, or a rude person etc..

i just think its the airlines responsiblity to have accomidations for a variety of passengers(like how bathrooms have to have handicap provisions),
now granted, most obese people are that way through their own negligence, but you can end up in a wheelchair for a variety of self-induced reasons, that doesn't mean you shouldnt have access to handicapped toilets

Man, how small are you people that you think the airline seats are plenty big? My ass fits in a seat just fine, and I don't have fat spilling over onto anyone else, but the whole flight (if in coach) my knees are forced into the seat in front of me and my shoulders are big enough that if you're not a small woman you're going to become well-acquainted with them over the course of the flight. What sort of a diet do I need to go on to shrink my skeleton? Or is that an extra walk around the block every day?

Sure, if you're 500lbs, you should probably have 2 seats, but the airlines pack way too many seats into coach. They need to come up with a happy medium between first class and coach. I don't really need free champagne or a hot towel for my face, but an extra inch on each armrest or 6 more inches in front of me would be worth paying an extra $100 or $200.

My response is both to your post and the one before yours, I agree with kriista only under your conditions. I think it seems fair to say that airlines should find a medium between coach and first class for fat or tall people, or people that just want a little more room for whatever reason - but only if you are willing to pay for it. By no means should the airlines have to make special seating for fat people and eat the cost themselves, nor should the rest of us have to suffer a general increase in ticket prices to solve the issue either.

I generally go for the aisle seat so I will at least have one side of me that isn't smashed to pieces. Inevitably, every time I book late and get a middle row I end up between the two largest people on the plane. I'm not huge, but neither am I small. I'm 6', 190ish and I wear a 44 coat. Seats weren't made for tallish broad people for the most part, so sitting me between oversized people makes it that much worse. It would be nice if there was some way to handle seating arrangements that did not lead to extreme discomfort for the person sitting next to an oversized passenger though. If this dude was 430 when he took the flight I'd say they were right to charge him the second seat.

With that said, I'm not sure they could create seat restirctions purely on weight. I've known some people that seem to carry all their weight in their ass. While the seat may be relatively uncomfortable for them, they wouldn't intrude into my space on the airline.

Actually they will tell someone with an truely offensive odor to go wash up or they will not fly. I used to fly 2 times a week for 9 years and saw that done 2 times. As far as Krista's point, I do not agree. You are buying a seat, true, but the person next to you should have some reasonable expectation of comfort.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. Is this true? Disregarding this debate entirely, can't airlines sell space vs transport if they so choose? I don't see what would prevent them from doing this, other than angering customers who don't agree with their decision.

You are right here. At least I don't see how that wouldn't be the case, they are a private business and can decide to refuse anyone service for any reason, at any time. Now I'm sure some fat angry customer could sue, but if the judges would stop letting bullshit lawsuits like this even come to trial, that wouldn't even be a concern.

You're paying for the amount of space an average person is going to occupy, there's only so much space available on a plane. The fact a large person utilizes twice that is something that person needs to be responsible for.

I'm 5' 10", 155 and hit my knees in coach seats, they're getting to be too small for anyone IMO.

Speaking as a gradually shrinking fat bastard, the seats are too small for normal sized people. By normal, I mean your basic east coast/midwesterner, not Miss Size California Anorexic Boob Job...

BUT...

As a fatass, there are things I regularly do in preparation that any moron can do. First, you reserve a specific seat, ideally the one at the isle at the rear of the plane. You dress light and travel light. You ask for a belt extender right off the bat. If its busy season, you prepare to bite the bullet and buy the other ticket. Thems the lumps you take for being a fat fucker. Anyone who is a fatass who does not take these basic steps deserves to be tossed off of the plane.

As for the bariatric surgery, this is something I had done this summer. The out of pocket cost is about 2 grand and thats before the insurance will even look at your case. You also have to pay for all the specialists that you have to see, prior to the surgery actually taking place. Then, of course, the actual proceedure and recovery time mean pretty much a minimum of 6 weeks off work, so that leads to other issues. If you have the insurance, the time, and the means, it works wonders, though. At my current pace, I will probably be half my old body weight when I fly back home this christmas, so we will see how well I fit into the seats this time around.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Just to add, I'm in the same boat. I'm taller than average and have broad shoulders. My knees are jammed into the seat in front of me before the seat is reclined, and I'm in pain if the person in front of me reclines. This isn't because i'm slouched down in the seat either. The width of my shoulders is greater than the width of the chair. I try to be polite and give up an arm rest for the person next to me because they have to deal with sitting shoulder to shoulder (literally) with me for the entire flight. I also have difficulty in the window seats of many planes because my head (and shoulder) hits the wall/ceiling of the cabin while seated. I'll end up with a terrible crick in my neck from having my head off to an angle for the entire flight.

Where I see the slippery slope, is where is the line drawn? I'm not fat at all, but will I have to buy a 2nd ticket soon in order to fly? Will tall and/or large people be punished the same as overweight people?

The canadair regional jet ### (or something like that) that northwest airlines had was surprisingly roomy. Only two seats on either side of the aisle.

A porky person would need three seats on Alitalia (Italy) Airlines.

Im 6'2" but felt like I was Shaq every time I had to fly in one of their planes to get to Sardinia. Forget knee room. There was zero elbow room.

Also, who remembers when smoking was allowed on U.S. airlines? I fucking do. Well, I don't think Alitalia restricted smoking until sometime in the 2000's. Cramped with a nasty haze of smoke in the air is not the way to travel. And Alitalia had Soutwest Airlines beat easy with their cattle car approach to seating. They'd shuttle you out near the plane in buses with side doors and then open them. People would swarm out of the buses into the front and back entrances of the plane, scrambling for seats.

ever since i switched to jet blue after burning all of my continental miles, i have been quite pleased with my flying. They don't look to be much wider but the legroom is about two inches longer. It makes a huge difference if you're like most people who have under seat storage. They are also very confortable leather seats.

Aren't they heavily subsidized in some form by the government

What sort of a diet do I need to go on to shrink my skeleton? Or is that an extra walk around the block every day?

Sure, if you're 500lbs, you should probably have 2 seats, but the airlines pack way too many seats into coach. They need to come up with a happy medium between first class and coach. I don't really need free champagne or a hot towel for my face, but an extra inch on each armrest or 6 more inches in front of me would be worth paying an extra $100 or $200.

Yeah, but then you have to fly on United :vv_throwup:
My husband is 6' 4" and he has to sit at an angle on airplanes. I think the worst experience I have ever had flying was a recent flight on United. It was a 2 or 3 hour flight and it was on one of the smaller planes (I do not know the model but it was 2 seats on either side of the row). I was sat at the very back of the plane and the engine noise/vibrations were horrible. When the flight landed it felt like I had been using a jack hammer with no ear plugs for 3 hours. And I was flying with 5 month old baby, I think our voices sounding weird from the vibrations kept him pretty entertained though.

And your last half a dozen posts should be in the retards forum, what's your point? Were you trying to prove something by making these "this thread should be in x forum" posts? While I am kind of interested, I'm not interested enough to research it myself.

Yes, I was attempting to make a point. I fucking hate the snide little fuck who always comments in people threads with "this thread should be in ......". They have nothing to contribute to the topic, so they trash the poster with their fucking assholish behavior. I'd like to bite them on the fucking face.

So Midnyte...was it logic or emotion that influenced you to annoy the entire forum because one
"snide little fuck" annoyed you recently?

Emotion. I'm not a governming body. I'm just a guy on a message board. Thanks for understanding the difference. Have a nice day.

You gotta be pretty damn fat to spill over into another seat on a 737. If this was a frog-made Airbus, I might be more understanding; those pleb-class seats are damn small.
