Heroes Season 2 Discussion *SPOILERS*

Post by Sylvus »

This is the topic for discussion re: Heroes Season 2.

Discussion of the first season, including spoilers, can be found in this thread.

-----------------------------------------

That was too cool, on tonight's episode, the guy who played Mr. Bennett's new boss was my buddy Brian from high school. He didn't tell me he was going to be on it, that was awesome.

I sent him a text complimenting him on his cheesy mustache.

Haha I bet that's a shocker! "Damn, I had algebra with him!"
I thought the episode was fairly tame, similar to the pilot episode. It was clearly getting us on our feet for the season, setting up everything that has happened and introducing new characters. It sucks about Hiro's dad, I loved George Takei in the show. I had a funny feeling that when Kensei took off his helmet, it was going to be Takei. Turns out I was wrong, but I always love the introduction of an Englishman into the show.

I half-enjoyed the opener. What I don't like is that Hiro is still sort of a pansy; figured at this point he would have put a number on the poseur brit and had his way with the swordsmith's daughter. ;) Claire is more well-rounded, although the emo-boyfriend bit is getting a bit old--especially since he is a creepy stalker--chanelling the kid from that Kevin Spacey movie. Claire's dad kicks ass--glad to see him being fleshed out more, like at the end of the first season....a pleasant surprise there, so glad that they didn't drop his development.....er, yeah--it was cool to have something to watch on a Monday...we shall see.

PS: Journeyman is bitchin'

I'm going to continue posting on the other thread. The Lost thread seemed to do OK with one thread over multiple seasons. The most you'll ever have to refresh is 50 posts, just like on any other thread.

I also thought it was a pretty "quiet" episode. Not surprising as there's a lot to digest in this one. I think for new viewers, they should have used a power or two in the show beyond what they did. Old viewers know what's up but I'm sure there's been some recruiting of friends to watch this series so it needs a little bit of a bang to capture their interest.

The one (or two) new heroes from Mexico should be interesting. I wonder what her power is that kills and turns eyes black.

[Show]
Any guesses as to why Nathan Petrelli sees himself all burned in his reflection?

I'm also getting the Highlander vibe from Takei's comment about there being only 9 left and one of the nine killing the others off
I agree with the producers that Parkman's wife didn't add much to the show. Glad they got rid of her. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Veronica Mars woman's powers will be. It looks like Peter may become a tool for bad guys for a bit.

I enjoyed the episode last night, and I think it was really working on getting the new viewers comfortable with the characters. I don't think they were trying to advance the story yet.

recorded Journeyman, but haven't been able to watch it yet.

i am in favor of a non-winnow thread and a winnow-thread. best idea ever. we should follow the same format in other forums

i enjoyed the episode. I agree that Hiro's character needs to move the fuck on already. Its like the writers dont want to get rid of the cooky personality that sold him or something. I imagine that Hiro becomes the mythical hero himself eventually but jesus christ just GET ON WITH IT. I also originally had the prediction that the knight was Takei and his power was immortality (couldnt be more wrong, as it turns out!).

im so fucking unbelievably glad that Parkman's wife appears to be gone. He might actually become a bearable character now without all the lovey dovey bullshit.

The girl they got to play Molly is fan-fucking-tastic. Great casting find there

so yeah.. i liked the episode. lots of seeds planted and they all look promising

Yeah, that little girl has oodles of talent and really nails it. I imagine it will take some time to get all the characters rolling--I imagine by week 3, there will be some great plotlines going. :)

Looks like Peter has picked up some additional powers since last season, too.

I thought Peter just did the blue hand thing, that was the same as the alternate future episode where him and Sylar squared off with opposite color force powers, if the comparison holds. Granted, now that I say that, I don't exactly recall how he got that power, but he had it in the past (which was actually the future).

And how come the kid stalking Claire can fly? For a second there, I was thinking it was Peter in hiding, using an illusion to hide his appearance. I wasn't aware powers repeated, except for those people who could borrow/steal others' powers.

I don't remember anything ever being mentioned about powers not being able to be "repeated." I think it was just a part of the story to keep them separate in the first season. Having one person in the world with the ability to fly would not really be much of an evolutionary step.

I mentioned this on the other thread. Good move by the producers.

Either that plot line is a bit forced, or the kid knew something already and is working for someone else to keep track of Claire. The "robot" thing was kind of goofy.

I read or heard on a podcast that there will be repeated powers. They weren't sure if that meant two people would have the exact same ability, or have similar powers but would use a different method.

Out of all the flags on the big map of tracking (added to that, not everyone is flagged); there is no way that there would not be repeated powers. The only exceptions would probably be Peter and possibly Hiro.

Was an ok episode. Seeing the emo kid fly was disappointing for some reason. Guess with individual unique powers it seemed more gritty, now it's moving more towards fantasy land to me. The last thing I want to see is two people flying around fighting ala Matrix. Flying and the teleport/time-travel powers should be extremely limited as they're some of the most powerful. If they start rehashing all the powers, it's going to start sucking quickly and individual heroes will be less and less necessary.

Also, Nathan looking in the mirror at the end and seeing a burned version of his face made no sense without knowing whether that's how it was and he got it fixed (and if so, when/where/how), or if it was just something else even more unexplainable.

Claire's stalker looks too much like Kyle XY to me, and his airbrushed look annoys me.

Overall, both Chuck and Journeyman were much better. Even K-Ville was probably more entertaining.

The only real speculation I had was who was the robed guy that killed Hiro's father. Obviously it was someone who had powers as they could easily survive the fall from the building. Or fly away. I was thinking maybe Sylar which is why his identity was concealed to make it more of a 'surprise' but who knows. I don't remember him having any powers that would allow that but in the past few months Iforgot all the things he could do. I hope Sylar isn't a huge character this season. I'd rather see the fight be with 'The Company' this go around and not a villian-type character. I don't know why they didn't just kill him off last season.

They probably kept him because he was so enjoyed by the viewers. *shrug*

I'd guess either Claire's stalker or Nathan. Those are our two flying men at the moment and there was no body on the ground. Even Claire takes a minute or two to regen once dead or injured. Though I don't see Nathan having the rank in the organization to put out hits on people, or the emo kid for that matter..

I wouldn't think it was either of those. The flying kid is in California and Nathan is a bit of a wreck at the moment. Plus his mother was one of the 'marked' ones. Although he doesn't really care about her at the moment. I guess there's not enough to go on at the present time!

I thought it was a good start to a second season. It dosen't appear that they are messing with the formula very much. I agreee that some of the storylines could move along a bit faster (Hiro), but I bet the creators will have some surprises in store later down the road. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for the slower moving side stories. Season 1 started out a bit slow as well, and really picked up around the 4th episode IMO. If you think about it, this episode didn't even cover some of the characters from the first season yet. I think we'll be seeing updates in the next episode. Someone mentioned that this episode was just planting the seeds, and I agree with that analogy.

Winnow mentioned that he is going to keep posting in the original Heros thread, so I figured I would justify my reasons for wanting a new thread for this season.

I actually think the Lost thread is a good example of why seperate threads for each season would be a welcome addition. I only watched the first season of Lost, therefore, reading anything beyond that risks spoilers. After I watch the 2nd season on DVD, I will have to find the spot in the thread where the second season starts, then when I comment on it, it will be well beyond the 3rd season in "thread progression".

Btw, anyone read the other Heros thread in awhile? Some pretty funny stuff on there as far as who absolutley hated the show and which characters people didn't like and evetually changed their minds. Good times in that thread!

I really thought of this as a common sense approach, so I apologize if I was being too forward in starting this thread.

RANT ON:

Goodamn I was spoiled by watching the first season on DVD. All the pop up adds (whoever thought of those should be killed) were beyond annoying. The Bionic Woman is coming up, I fucking get it already. Put your advertisments in the commercials breaks! Oh, don't forget to BUY A FUCKING NISSIAN. Did they seriously play the same commercial 3 times in a row for each break?

Good call, I like that reasoning. I'll split season 2 stuff out of the old post and merge it with this, and then rename the other to Season 1.

Since me asking for opinions would make half the people bitch about that being a bad policy and half the people liking it, I'm just going to do it that way for all shows (that I think about) from now on. For anyone starting a similar thread for a following season of a different show, please include links to the threads for previous seasons in the opening post of the thread.

They've added a Mexican brother and sister with an undefined power. I'm thinking it will be "Wonder Twins-esque". It also looks like whatever power the girl demonstrated, it was released under stress, and killed a lot of innocent people. So, it also appears to be a blessing and a curse type of power.

I really hope they add a "Tank" class at some point. I want to see some super strength and high resiliance!

I hear ya on the Nissan commercials, fair. Luckily, they had minimal ads for the season opener--that was great not having a commercial every 10 minutes or so! I doubt that will be a trend though. =/

I was thinking the same last night. And even moreso than the super strength Nikki/Jessica has. I was kind of hoping for someone to "Hulk-out" or have something along the lines of Colossus or something. Though I doubt that will happen because they seem to keep a relatively low effects budget.

I was thinking maybe the Mexican brother was going to Hulk Out when they took his sister. We know she has that power that kills people and makes them bleed from their eyes. Btw, the look of the dead was eerily like the "black oil" from X-files. We can assume the brother have a power as well, we just don't know what it is.

My wife had a decent idea... What if when they are together it keeps her powers in check, but when they are seperated she goes out of control killing everyone around her? That's not likely, but I always appreciate it when my wife thinks like a comic geek. Besides, that was something even I hadn't thought of!

No kidding. In season one, what's her name's body was dumped in Ramsey Lake in Sudbury, my home town. Only problem is, they said Sudbury was located 100 miles outside of Ontario when clearly, we are smack in the middle of the province. Oh well, I still got a kick out of it.

No, those episodes are going to be in the middle of the season. They are using them to keep from taking a break where they have to show reruns. They said they'll let the viewers vote on which characters they like, and the winner(s?) will be added to season 3.

I liked the episode, but I do have some worries. Which is that with all the cool storylines popping up and more to come (still haven't seen all the characters from last season) I have a strange feeling that it will move as slow as it did last year. I like the show, but the progression is absolutely horrible.

I'm not totally against it. But for example, I think they could have laid everything out and not lost one bit of story if they condensed last season down to say 18 episodes instead of 24.

The version I saw had no such popup advertising... perhaps you should send a letter of intent to your service provider...
Here is the US the networks are going to the in-show "pop up" style advertising because of the advent of DVR's that automatically strip commercials.

An unfortunate side effect, for certain!

I also think that the brother is keeping the sister's powers in check. When he isn't around, she probably can't control it for whatever reason.

One thing that bothered me in the Heroes Season 2 opener was that the HD/Peacock logo in the bottom right wasn't translucent enough. Normally little symbols on the screen don't bother me but that one did. Also, the pop ups were too much IMO. I was trying to get into the story and shit kept popping up, breaking the flow of things. I'd rather a character just wear a Nissan T-Shirt, and some other characer a Nissan Hat, Nissan Backpack, etc.,..have the little girl's nighmare drawings include a Nissan Versa...better than pop-ups.

If it gets annoying enough, I'll just wait for the DVD rips. Hopefully all entertainment shows move to a pay per episode format, sold via download or on-demand.

I don't think The iTune versions have popups or commercials? They need HD versions though.

Was a fairly decent episode. The flying toe sorta made me laugh. Not really caring much about the twins trying to make it to the U.S. though.

I already assume the twins are going to be the ones responsible for bringing down the boogeyman. "You have a spirit to kill the Devil", or some such load of crap was said to the girl by the 'medicine woman'.
Claire, ehh. I'm tired of the emo boy already, he reminds me of Ricky from American Beauty.
Hiro was a badass; I thought it was funny how he took their weapons from them.

Does anyone else wish they had Peter's ability? I watch this show, and I just wish that I could do the things he can do. It's my number one reason for watching right now. That's why last season's episode "Five years later" is my favorite, when Peter is facing off against Sylar with the glowing hands. Anytime he uses his abilities, I get filled with envy.

The guy that plays Peter is pulling the character off amazingly well IMO. I like that the Haitian is now back with Mr. Bennet (I'm gonna keep calling him that. I like it better.)

The Claire/emoboy#2 storyline I'm very meh about thus far. Hopefully he winds up being a red shirt.

Stalker boy is fucking annoying. I hope he is an option to vote off the island. Very cool that the Haitian is back--he was one of my favorites from last season. Also, I am enjoying the Peter story arc, although his situation seems a bit cliche (help us do crime or you will never get your wallet back, etc). However, it is only 2 episodes in.... a bit of an improvement on the Hiro arc, but we may not see him get some swordsmithdaughterass for a while--poor little fella.

Good episode. The Hiro parts were hilarious, and I'm not really surprised about Kensei having an ability. I wish they'd reveal what Angela Petrelli's ability is already! Peter is infinitely easier to stomach without the emocut. The toe was gross!

What was up with [White guy pretending to be Japanese guy] getting shot with the arrows and then healing last night? Does he have healing powar, or did Hiro somehow exhibit previously unknown healing powar?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Pretty sure that he had the power himself. It just might not have manifested until then, since he never let himself get into harm's way before :P

Peter is a bad ass. It was nice to see him use multiple powers in this episode. I'm wondering if he's eventually going to have a "Superman" problem. I mean, he has the potential to be an uber hero and there's only so many ways to have a story about someone that powerful.

Overall, it was a great second episode.

I think to that, Fairweather, we need to stop and consider how he got the scar in the episode in season one entitled "Five Years Later". He has that scar that runs down his face. At the time, he had already absorbed Claire's abilities; while he had gone down to Texas to save Claire, his brother had left him to his fate in New York, thus dooming the city and setting them down that dark timeline.
If Peter had absorbed the regeneration power from Claire, then how could he get a scar that left an impression on him? The only conclusion I can come up with is that he's going to face someone who can move past his abilities. Perhaps he was around the Haitian when he was cut, and then the scar became permanent, since the regeneration was nullified. Whatever the reason, Peter is going to face someone who can put a dent in his arsenal, and that's going to be a boss to watch out for. It could be Sylar, or it could be someone else. We don't have any way of knowing yet.
The dark side of me would love to see Peter turn into an egotistical prick and go evil on us, but only as a "what if" type scenario. I think that would kill the show, since they spent so long building him up as the emo brother who can't stop feeling.
