What the hell do you wear to your Reunion?

What the hell do you wear to your Reunion?

Post by Tyek »

Number 20 is coming up this weekend and was not planning on attending. Some old schoolmates conned me into going and I have no idea what you are supposed to wear. Do you go suit? Do you go semi-casual? I was thinking maybe even club type wear. Any thoughts? What did any of you guys and gals wear to yours? The wife is thinking about going the "little black dress" route.

I would dress semi Casual. Black pants, dress shoes, and a nice button shirt with no tie. You could always keep the tie in your pocket just in case. The little black dress looks good in any setting, so your wife should be set.

I disagree. Those that try and put out that vibe always look like fools. Besides, anyone that tries to turn a reunion in to a "I'm more successful than you" contest is a very pathetic person IMO. There's nothing more pathetic than someone trying desperatly to be something they're not.

Thanks for the replies. I am not out to "shine". I just didn't want to overdue it, or underdress for the reunion. My life has treated me well. I don't need to show it off. Although I will be showing off my pretty wife.

One of my dad's best friends, extremely successful in life, looked like he dressed by picking through clothes at a garbage dump. He was one of the best humans on the planet before he passed away. If people aren't going to look past appearance, fuck'em.

Dress casual and downplay what you've done since high school. If someone needs to fake it up at a reunion, let them enjoy their moment. After the party's over, everyone goes back to their real lives which is what matters.

I did the business casual at my 10 year reunion(why dthey did a 10 instead of a 20 I'm not sure). Nice pants, shoes and shirt.

Reunions are quite the interesting thing. Most of the friends I hung out with didn't bother showing up for the thing so I hung around with a different set of people. Here I thought the evening would be about reminising and instead I got an evening of getting to know a new group of people who I didn't really associate with in HS.

I would personally wear a suit, but I can be a little old school with things like that.

I most definately would not wear clubwear, and I would most definately not try to prove that you're the shit. Just be yourself and all will go well.

I'd wear a suit. It's not about being something that you're not, it's just about looking and feeling good.

Hell, the dress code here at work is business casual and I've been in a suit the past 3 days in a row... though I am bucking for a promotion.

Agree 100%! You should go to a reunion to see old friends and catch up, not try to impress people. I didn't go to my 10th and not sure if I'll go to my 20th simply because I can't really think of anyone I'd like to catch up with.

Well,it is much different 10-20 years later than when you are fresh out of high school. I should hope nobody gives 1/30 of a fuck about impressions at this point. :) The idea is to just pop in along with whatever percentage of folks that do show up and have a group wtf at old times.

I kinda regret missing my 10th, but I will certainly make my 20th...just for shits and giggles.

I transferred to my high school during my junior year. The vast majority of my friends were in neighboring school districts. I can count on one hand with a couple fingers left over the number of people that I care about from my graduating class, and since I've kept in touch with them, I'm an e-mail or phone call away from catching up with them whenever I want. I could not care less about impressing any of my former classmates then, and I certainly don't care now. I skipped our 10th & 20th, and the odds of me attending the 30th are too small to calculate :)

As for what to wear, nothing makes a statement like assless chaps and a ball gag.

What kind of slobs are all of you people?

Dress "nice". If you want to wear a jacket (with or without tie), go ahead. You aren't going to be the only person there dressed like that, and no one is going to be like "oh my god, what a pretentious asshole!". I wouldn't wear ripped jeans and a tshirt, I'm guessing that you'll see a few people wearing jeans though. I'd probably go the suit sans tie route. The fact that it's only every 10 years means that it's a special occasion, and people generally get dressed up for special occasions. At least where I'm from. If your high school class consisted of 15 people and they are all farmers now, your mileage may very.

Wearing anything more than a hoody is trying to impress! People are bound to spill drinks so either wear shoes with some grip, have some saw dust in your pocket to throw over the spills, or wear shoes that can be thrown up on.

Wearing a Bluetooth earpiece the entire time is a must.

If you're over the legal DUI limit before entering the reunion doors, you'll have a good time.

As an alternative, hold your class reunion online in Second Life. A clothing change is just a folder drag away!

Ok so....

category 1) those who know you (opinion matters)
category 2) those who don't know you (opinion doesn't matter)

What I've never understood about your statement and similar statements that people make is.... weren't all those in category 1 at one point probably in category 2? At least some of them? I care what people think because they might be a friend waiting to be discovered! And in looking good, you're open to the idea of meeting new people. In my world almost everyone's opinion matters. Why? Because I want to know and learn from as many people as possible. Why not, after all?

It's not quite that simple.

My first impression of someone doesn't generally have a whole lot to do with how they're dressed. If you're "dressed to impress" it's usually pretty obvious to everyone around and you'd be the last one I'd be likely to want anything to do with. I can spot loonies, liars and the foolish almost 100% within a couple minutes of being introduced. I try to stay away from them.

Enter statement, A:

and contradiction, B:
If you're "dressed to impress" ... you'd be the last one I'd be likely to want anything to do with

I don't see what's so bad about wearing nice clothing.

This thread made me uncork a couple of situations where I saw people that I haven't seen in ages (keep in mind it has been 15 years since HS graduation for me). Remembering people's names was the real trick--I had moved to CA my sophomore year so only ended up developing lasting friendships with a handful of people--the rest kind of drifted off, etc once school was done and folks moved away.

Aside from a couple of chicks I would be interested in seeing (providing they were actualy single), I can't really come up with any particular reason to go, should they track me down again for the next go around. But of course, I may be much more curious at that point. Mileage will always vary.

Back to the topic....

I like the suit sans tie approach, especially if your wife wants to dress up.
