How long have MMO's been out of your life?

How long have MMO's been out of your life?
Simple question.
If you're in the middle of a break but plan to or assume you will return, don't pick the second option.

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
Well I haven't really played EQ a whole lot in the past eight months but I did log in for awhile a week or two ago so not sure that counts or not! If I had a copious amount of freetime I'd play more but RL is fairly busy these days and I don't have the ~4 hours a day it takes to be a serious player.
(Oh and I never played another MMO besides EQ and probably never will. Had no desire since they are all basically the same thing so why do all that leveling and character building again? Makes no sense!)

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
I don't like the wording of the poll.
Should be something like:
The longest break I've taken from MMOs since playing my first one has been (insert various options here), with additional options "I have never played an MMO" and "I've never taken a break of more than one month", and "I'm currently not playing but won't rule out trying another MMO sometime in the future", "Vanguard ruined my desire to ever play MMOs again", "It's none of your business"

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
I selected year or more, but dont plan on playing anything out there currently.....maybe if something good comes along
Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
I haven't played in about a month. I guess I started nesting early (to prepare for a new baby next month) and just realized there are SOOO many other things I should be doing instead of playing in the evenings. What's strange is that I can't say that I've missed it. I miss talking with guildmates, etc but I don't miss them THAT much.

this poll made me a little sad because I had to pick "permanently retired" ..
I played everquest for six freaking years and was pretty "hardcore" for much of it, and then only dipped into WoW after morteus got me a gamecard ;p (it wasn't the same)
I have random EQ flashbacks sometimes, and I miss the raids and the people but I know that "phase" of my life is done.

It's doubtful anything will ever match the 365 RL days played on Winnow and ~70 more RL days with other characters in EQ over a 4-5 year time span. That worked out to be around 50 hours a week in EQ for several years. Holy shit.
While the intense guild activity and drama of those days won't be matched in other MMORPGs, that's not really a bad thing and allows playing some other MMORPGs in the future without being consumed by them. It really comes down to the people you meet while playing them. I somehow manage to run into interesting people in most games without being on a mission to do so.
I don't think it's an age thing because I was probably older than you are now (that's just a guess!) when I first started playing EQ so it's not something you have to grow out of! I can relate to it being a "right time, right place" sort of thing though. I would never want to be so focused on a game again as I was in EQ though. There are too many areas of interest and too few years to dedicate to each of them. MMORPGs should be treated like alcohol or anything else with potential addictive qualities. Moderation is the key to fun! (with a couple binges thrown in here and there!)

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
I voted permanently retired. I had a blast for the 4 or 5 years I played EQ, and I had fun with WoW for about a year or two, but I just don't have the time to dedicate to them anymore. When I really want to be able to play a game, I want to be able to do it right, and that takes time. Plus the more I think about it, the more ridiculous it seems to have scheduled times you need to be on a game for a raid.
I had a ton of fun in EQ, I severely doubt many things in my life will be that much fun for that long again, but I'm sticking to the consoles now (besides a few non - mmo's coming out.)

Still play WoW casually, took a long break between EQ1 and WoW, and a 1 year break from WoW as well at one point.
Haven't cared for the other MMOs I've tried.

Just vote for the 'break' option of the appropriate length.Where is the option for people that play now, but have taken a break in the past?
Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
The most reasonable answer for myself would be the ~6 month option. However, even though I play now, my playing time has been drastically reduced from the ~20 hours per week playing in PoP and AO beta. My character in WoW was created about a month after release and is now about only 9 days played. It's debatable whether that's really a break in and of itself. It's almost ridiculous how much I knew about EQ, tracked it, followed the updates, etc. I know shit about the intricacies of WoW. My main is level 54, I've done two instances, and my specs are probably ridiculous to someone who knows the game well. However, it is casual enough that I can still dick around and bullshit with the largely hardish core guild whom are mostly overseas serving.

I played 5.5 years of EQ, then went straight into WoW. I'm still playing and really enjoying it. I've getting more into the PvP aspect and it is a refreshing change. I don't forsee myself leaving anytime soon.

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
Don't think I have taken more than a month off. But, I will only sit down and play once or twice a week and sometimes, not at all for a couple of weeks. It's more of a time killer now and a moderate escape from reality than the hardcore addiction that it once was. The only think I play now is CoH and I probably only play that because it is not addictive and it fits my ADD personality by allowing me to make so many different character combinations that I am content.

On this particular topic, I thought the poll was a good idea but clearing up the wording might help provide more useful results. As it stood, I couldn't answer the poll question and there are no "other" or "none of the above" options.
I don't know what you mean about me always trying to make people change styles. I've never been grammar nazi or anything like that. If you mean something else by style, I need more explanation.
I'll give this style thing a try:
Women of the board: please start wearing short skirts and your hair in pigtails
Dudes: avoid the 70's poofy hair look and big collars
Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
I don't see how your gameplaying habits could possibly be so complicated. As it stood, I couldn't answer the poll question and there are no "other" or "none of the above" options.
Have you quit MMO's? Vote for the quit MMO's option.
Have you played continuously? Vote for the played continuously option.
Have you done anything else? Then vote for the option which corresponds with the longest period of time you haven't played.
What else is there?

It's your opening question that presents the confusion:Sueven wrote:I don't see how your gameplaying habits could possibly be so complicated. As it stood, I couldn't answer the poll question and there are no "other" or "none of the above" options.

It sounds to me like you're asking a question about the current state of affairs in each person's life and then your poll options also don't help as they all appear to be present tense...leaving absolutely no wiggle room for someone that may have taken various length breaks between MMOs but is currently playing an MMO.
Jesus Christ , Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ!
Taken literally, your opening question demands even more responses as from birth (or conception if you're a right to life freak)until Ultima Online (or your first MMO), is a long time. Are we to start the clock with the the officially ackowledged first known date that an MMO was available to play or count years previous to any MMO?

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
Nothing can ever match those good ol' EQ-moments!
All the soap-opera intrigues behind the scenes a la Melrose and the dire need for people with completely different backgrounds, age-groups and social backgrounds to cooperate.
Having to stay up when doing corpse-recovery is nothing i miss, but it surely made people cooperate more and forced some teamwork between people who'd never work together otherwise!
Many fun memories. From running from zombies in W.Commons to joining forces in the planes.
I stopped playing around Ykesha-expansion, when they fruited up the troll-models, or wait, did they ruin the troll-models in Luclin already?
Well, the game surely lost it's glister around the Ykesha-expansion for me. Every troll encountered looked like a sea-hag from Legend. Not the cuddly chubbsters we all grew to love over the years!

Played EQ hardcore for 7 years then played WOW for about a year. Now I am retired permanently or at least until something comes out that is much better than what is out there atm.

Played EQ for 5 years or more, like most. Played WoW open beta and release for a good while--took year break or so, both eq and wow.
Now I occasionally play WoW and recently EQ2.

When using the original model and textures, my troll wore a Batman T-shirt.
Unfortunately when everyone else saw him (most peeps used new models), he looked tall, blue and weird

Impossible to make that fashionstatement like before (combining vindibp with so and so pants etc), since you looked different for those (almost everyone) using the new models.
Couldn't do the sliding butt-dance either.
Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
That's what destroyed EQ. No game should allow different players to view characters in totally different ways. A big part of MMORPGs is customizing your character and being proud of what you've done...hard to do that when one person sees you as a cute little gnome and the other sees you as a wrinkled old hag gnome with some ridiculous helmet instead of the cool helmet you had. The designers on acid that came up with the new models and armor that only changed color when you were rewarded with new sets, screwed the players and caused the major blow to the game.Kwonryu DragonFist wrote: Impossible to make that fashionstatement like before (combining vindibp with so and so pants etc), since you looked different for those (almost everyone) using the new models.

The fucking bozos that put together the Luclin expansion were completely whacked.

What are you doing that gives you more free time after law school than during law school? Whatever it is, it's what I want to do. I have a reasonable amount of free time now but am dreading the post-school hours.

yeah, both newbie levels, but I just got game over weekend and have not had any time to play.

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
Would Ogame count as an mmo? I devote a tremendous amount of time to it. It is a massive multi player online game without the role playing part (which itself is arguable). I've taken breaks of a year or more from MMOs, but mostly to play other games. I will always be a gamer, but I'll jump from game to game. I already know i will devote a year or two to starcraft 2. I will play ogame until that is released.

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
I enjoy MMO's and I believe I'll always will. Gaming is my preffered form of entertainment. I havent taken a break longer than a couple of weeks since EQ. I currently play WoW and on patch days and late night I play a lil EQ2. (Had to make a Fae) They are sooo darned cute!!!!!

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
I voted permanently retired, but I would have to assume that I will play a game of that type again at some point in my life. I put 3-4 years in on EQ (Aanadil had over 100 days online when I quit EQ), and just got done with a stint on EQ2 (Fodcollector went from 1-67/68 in about 6 months).
I would still be playing EQ2, but there are too many kids (or people who act like kids) around. I became disenchanted when I saw the Terrorantula up about a month ago. I tried getting a pickup raid going and was getting tells calling me a n00b and a loser. Apparently no one wants to kill that lame mob because he drops crap lewtz. And I thought it was fun having a challenge... I guess I was wrong. Meanwhile those same people camp the same 4 zones every day of the week. I guess I just have a hard time paying for something that isn't fun anymore. [/rant]

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
I'm permanently retired as well. And like most of you I still do have flash backs where I crave a huge raid but I know it's never going to happen again. After EQ, WoW just didn't match the excitement so I quit that pretty quickly and decided it was time to dedicate that time to school and things that are important. Clatis had well, wayyy too many hours on him. It just made me think, "What did I miss during that time I spent sitting in front of a computer?"
But yes, permanently retired ~ and never going to pick up an mmo ever again

Re: How long have MMO's been out of your life?
I quit EQ early 2004 cold turkey and haven't looked back at it nor any other MMO. I could easily, easily see myself devoting all of my free time to EQ or WoW, but in the same sense that I don't smoke cigarettes because I don't want lung cancer, it's just not worth it.
