(CBS) NEW YORK A day after tying the record for the coldest high temperature during the month of August ever in New York City, temperatures were expected only to warm up slightly, before finally climbing back to normal by the end of the week.

The city along with the rest of the tri-state region is feeling the chilly effect of a cold front sweeping through the region, accompanied by cool rain showers.

Tuesday's high temperature in Central Park was just 59 degrees. The normal high for Tuesday was 82 degrees. The normal low was 67.

Forecasters were calling for temperatures to rise to about 66 for the high on Wednesday.

Digg This Story!

"This unusual blast of cold air smashed our previous record for the coldest high temperature on August 21, which is 64 degrees, set back in 1999," CBS 2 meteorologist Jason Cali told wcbstv.com.

In fact, the 59-degree high tied the record for the coldest high temperature ever for the month of August in New York City, when it reached just 59 degrees in 1911.

Tuesday's highs are more common in the city for the final days of October, when the average high ranges from 59 degrees to 61 degrees.

The unusually cold air mass has come down from Canada, colliding with the moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin.

"The good news is the cold air is not going to stick around. We'll get back to more seasonal levels later this week and we may even sneak a few more final hot weekends of the summer," Cali said.

Temperatures are expected to climb back into the upper 80s by Friday.
We really need to look into what we can do as residents of earth to stop this global cooling. I fear for our future.

I hate how cool it's been this summer in NY. I've had to wear jeans and a coat out multiple times in July - August after early evening. That's just st00pid.

If this is Al Gore's way of punishing us for ignoring global warming I hate him.

At least you can GO outside at night! It's still 90º and around 85% humidity around here at night :(

Odd weather indeed. Here in the Phoenix metro area, we just tied a record for most 110+ degree days in a row at 26. The forecast overnight low is 89 for tonight!

Yeah, the eleven billion inches of rain here over the summer (yeah, it was less than that, but not by much!) have helped keep our temps lower than normal. I think we might have had one or two 100º+ days this summer.

I don't envy your ridiculously hot nights at all. I for one hate air conditioning at night when I'm trying to sleep, but I hate anything over 70 degrees and humidity even more.

Still, the average summer night over the past couple of years has been 75 - 80 and low humiditiy, perfect for t-shirt, jeans and nothing more. It's the kind of weather you don't notice.

Lately it's been 50s, some high 40s with the occasional nice night.

I think global warming is taking the heat out of New York and giving it to the rest of you guys. I, for one, won't stand for it much longer, and if it keeps up I'm going to round up all my friends and run our cars for days on end and burn piles of coal in my back yard until the problem is solved.

Pharm.

Not this time of year. It's 39% out right now and I feel like I'm swimming in moisture.

And moisture is the essence of wetness.

That didn't work out so well for Cartman. I wish you better luck!

39%? Thirty-nine fucking percent? Call me when it hits 80% and we'll talk.

When you're used to 4-7%, well, 39% might as well be 98%. (I used to live in Virginia, so I know all about 98% humidity, but I've been here 12 years now and I've gotten used to it.)

It has been a great summer in Portland. Only once has it gotten to 100+, and that was back in July. It rarely has breached 90. FABULOUS. Last year, we had a heat wave each month--approaching 106 in some spots.

I hope it is like this next year...gimme sunny and 76.
