I need help getting a Digital Camera.

Post by Harfle »

I cant figure out which one to get. I was thinking in the 150-250 price range. Don't know much about them other than I used this one for about 3 months until it got stolen.

I would suggest researching them to find cameras in that price range you may be interested in then checking for a review at http://www.dpreview.com . Someone at work recently bought a Fujifilm FinePix F30 Zoom and seems to like it. I think it's a bit above your price range but not by a whole lot.

I recommend checking out the the Canon Powershot SD700 IS. It might be a little above your price range, but it's definitely a camera worth looking at.

edit: It actually looks like it can be found for under $250 now.

dpreview is a good source, as Aslanna stated. For that price range, I would go with the Canon PowerShot varieties. You will most likely get the more bang for your buck there. Well-made lower-end cameras that take great pictures.

Even though it is avatar-sized, I took the avatar pic with a 3.2 megapixel Canon PowerShot--simple, I know, but it did as intended and I have taken some great photos with it, and some that printed out nicely to 11x14". At the time, the camera was $260 or so, but you can get a much better camera for less now...

We've got an older PowerShot A520 (4MP) and an S3IS (6.2MP), and have been really pleased with both. The A520 has been replaced, but you can get an A550 (7.1 MP) for around 150 from places like newegg.com. Plan to get a bigger SD Card in your budget, though, because the included one is so tiny that it's useless.

i have a powershot sd630 and i love it. i've heard great things about the newer models too. the feature that really sold me is that the picture changes orientation as you rotate the camera in view mode.

I think that's pretty much 'par for the course' when it comes to digital cameras.
With the pice of SD and micro SD cards these days, it's not really even necessary to 'budget' for a a bigger card. Less than $10 per gig (in Canada).

True, but some people want or need to stick to a strict budget and don't like a 20 or 30 dollar bump they weren't expecting. SD cards are super cheap now, though. It's been a while since I looked at them, and hadn't realized they've dropped as low as they have.

I paid $80 for a 512 SD only a couple of years ago.

I use the Olympus FE-210, I see however its off the shelf and the FE-230 replaced it. For a budget camera it works very well for what I use it for. Granted the only action it sees is kids birthdays, holiday photo type stuff. Plan on buying a media card for it, with the built in memory you can get 4 pictures at the high quality setting. I see Newegg has a free 512 card with this camera, not to bad of a deal.

You can get 2GB SanDisk Ultra-II for around 30 I think these days....

I am going to keep my PowerShot A510 until I finally decide if I want a Canon non-SLR G7 or Nikon SLR D40 (or D80 if I want to carry around GIANT BAG OF CAMERA STUFF). Still though, you can take some wicked shots with just about any of the super-cheap PowerShots...plenty of modes/buttons too. :)

Ordered one of these this morning to replace my old Sony Cyber-shot. It's larger than I would have liked but seemed like the most bang for the buck.
