Free Security Tools

Post by Diae Soulmender »

Does anyone know of any other 'good' free security tools besides the ones below?

=========

Firefox v2.0.0.6 - Free
http://www.mozilla.com/products/downloa ... lang=en-US

Make sure you also download/install the "NoScript" Firefox AddOn after installaing Firefox!
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

It will place a letter "S" in the lower right hand corner of your Firefox Browser. By default 'everything' is untrusted. To "Trust" a site permanently or even temporarily just right click on the "S" and make your choice. This addon is an absolute "must have" for everyone.

What NoScript does is PREVENT scripts from loading. It doesnt preclude you from broswing most websites, but some functionality may be lost if it cant run a script. If you trust them then "Trust" them with NoScript.

AdAware 2007 - Free

AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 - Free

AVG Anti-RootKit - Free - This does not 'prevent' them. It just checks for them and will remove if found.

Spybot: Search and Destroy - Free

I've had problems with Housecall the last couple of times I've tried to use it.

Anyone know of something similiar?

I have used spybot and ad-aware for years, good stuff.

What is the scoop on AVG?

AVG is excellent if you don't mind renewing it every 6 months. It uses multiple engines for detection and installs quickly and easily.

A minor inconvenience for such a powerful free tool.

I've been using it for a number of years now, no complaints at all. Lightweight, thorough and fast.

Started paying for it last summer, there's no real need to though :)
