Instant Messaging
I'm not sure how familiar any of you are with meebo, but it's basically a thin IM client that emulates trillian via AJAX and a web interface. What that means is, I can IM from work, though for how long is anybody's guess.
If, like me, you can't use IM clients from work, and you'd like to, check it out.

Yeah we dont much let people remote out to their machines at home. Too much liability in it.

Depends on where they are going. We have a dedicated team that reviews IDS alerts, proxy logs (the default route goes into the shitter, all access to the outside world is proxied) and just about everything else that happens on the network. If you're caught with outbound connectivity that's not work related or viewing something you shouldn't be (cgi-irc, for example), you and your manager get a notification. If you're a contractor this immediately translates to termination. An employee gets a three strikes and you're out kind of thing.Aslanna wrote:SSH blocked as well? That said, if you have a valid reason you can get a security waiver. SSH to a home network address would never pass the waiver proccess. You're bright enough to figure it out from there =)

Obviously you should check your local policies to see what sort of punishment you risk by using unapproved modes of connectivity. Not all work places are that draconian!

Re: Instant Messaging
My company recently lightened up on it's restrictions because it realized that cutting off employees from the net just made them dickheads and that no connection to the net doesn't equal great employees, just less happy employees. There are much better ways to evaluate an employee's performance than how much they surf the net.
Re: Instant Messaging
Sometimes people work at places where draconian policy doesn't really mean they're mean. Somtimes it means the government can shut your ass down, fine you or open you up to private litigation.
Then you need to worry about each country you're in and various laws they have that might be applicable.

Fuck other countries and fuck the government! That's why I don't work somewhere I need a secret clearance anymore. Can't surf!
But you know...when I did (Motorola, Government Electronics Division, Space and Systems Technology Group), the internet was wide open. Probably not that way anymore though!
