It's not really a bug, just the way Outlook compresses and stores old emails in your deleted folder. Just delete your old emails in large chunks at a time.

You must have a fucking huge dearth of old emails on your hard drive.

Voronwe Is your outlook hooked to a Exchange Server if so this might be a sign th at the Exchange Server Info Store Drive is full.

yeah its exchange server.

none of the folders in question were local folders.

just as an FYI i was trying to empty a "Deleted Items" folder that had less than 100 emails in it :).

I look forward to what amazements await me today!

You can set your exchange server to delete after a certain amount of days too. I know that if we delete emails on our pc's they stay on the server for 10 days before finally deleting perm. That is so the net nazis can still pull up that email you said you never got and blah blah blah.
