Video Games Live

Post by Lalanae »

Has anyone been to a Video Games Live event? Eric, his son and I saw it in Houston tonight and it was AMAZING! Its basicaly video game music performed by a 60-piece symphony and 70-person choir with video and lights and some other stuff thrown in. I HIGHLY reccommend it to anyone on this board if you get a chance to see it. They apparently were in Houston a year ago but we never heard about it, so odds are it will be back around.

Before the show, booths were set up all over the place with various console games for people to play. They started the show off with a long medley/montage of video gaming history, starting with Pong (which was humorously done). It was pretty crazy seeing all these old ass games and hearing the music (albeit in a more sophisticated form). The rest of the show featured certain games (Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, WoW, Final Fantasy, Civ IV, Halo, etc), sometimes with video introductions by the game's creator. During the show, they had a costume contest and some other on-stage contests that were pretty funny.

The only disappointment was that Square-Enix would not allow the show to use any images from their games, so the segments on Final Fantasy music were without video. Pretty sad considering most of the people there were HUGE FF fans (the roaring applause everytime FF was mentioned was proof of that). Fucking Disney allowed the event to use their images, and they are notoriously greedy with consent. (Kingdom Hearts music was played against video of original Disney characters, not the game... Very disappointing. Eric's son was really looking forward to seeing it too.)

In summary it's a win for kids and adults. Keep an eye out for it!!

What is anything like this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGciu14uBYg

That seems to be all vocals of people singing C-64 game songs. (that blonde chick hitting the high notes is actually impressive)

This might be more like what you saw?

That's the C-64 orchestra.

You dont need a full orchestra to play game music, a single band can do :)

DO NOT TAUNT ME

When they have Canadian dates we can talk about this.
Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable, let's prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all. - Douglas Adams

They'll be in Calgary in November. Doesn't look like they stop anywhere else in Canada this year though. Their tour seems to bounce around a lot...

I went to a performance of Nobuo Uematsu's music. The concert was entitled "Dear Friends" and it was in Chicago. It was all Final Fantasy music with a full piece choir, orchestra, and the little guy himself. It was amazing. After that concert, I went and bought all the music for those games. It was definitely a great time. I've heard about the Live concerts, but I haven't been able to get to one of those yet.

If you liked VGL, check out Play! A Video Game Symphony too. It's done by the same group that did the "Dear Friends" concerts (still no FF footage though!).

Play! didn't have all the fun booths and such that VGL had or make use of the big screen as near as much. Space Invaders & Frogger on a big screen! :) Most fun!
