Apple's not doomed, I'm just looking for it to go back to 90 before heading up again.

Last time I called a short on VV for AAPL, it had topped out at 90, I called it at 86 and covered conservatively at 74 but it eventually bottomed out below 60.

Image

A swing of 33% in just three months in a stock with a cap as large at Apple's is impressive.

This time, I'm looking for 25% (91) I'll bow out if Apple hits 127.

Who knows if it will get there. An announcement of a Video iPod with the characteristics of the iPhone would stop the bleeding.

I don't short stocks and only shorted Apple back in 2006 due to my intense irrational hatred of the company. I would have covered quickly if it went the other direction.

Welcome back Fameen!

Edit:

And to compare AAPL to MSFT, we should probably go back to the beginning. AAPL still has 23K% or so to catch up!

Compare MSFT to AAPL? Dude, you're seriously on crack. They're barely in the same business.

Niche computing and consumer-electronics vs. the biggest software company in the world? C'mon, Winnow... even you can do better than that.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Then again since 2003 or so Apple has been steadily increasing while Microsoft has remained relatively flat (since about 2001)!

"Dude" back at you. Fameen is the one that included MSFT in his chart, I just expanded the range of the chart.

And no, I wouldn't invest in MSFT anymore for long term growth. 284 B Market Caps frighten me. AAPL's been a great investment this decade.

I don't seriously want to see an American company of this stature fail...just take it up the ass, short term, once in awhile to maybe nudge them in different directions.

I included a comparison to MIcrosoft not because I believe the companies are exactly in the same business, but because Microsoft seems to be a company Winnow always champions and Apple is a company he consistently bashes. I was even surprised in checking to see how flat Microsoft has been the past decade during a major bull market.

Also, you clearly cannot discount the turn around Steve Jobs has done with Apple. Obviously the Chinese women surveyed haven't bought MIcrosoft stock in the last decade.

I can champion a company and not its stock price. Microsoft had its heyday in the growth department. It has a monster cap now.

In the high risk investment department, I'd rather champion a few micro caps with the potential for high growth.

AAPL would have forced me to cover just a few minutes ago as it popped over 127. A more rational approach to shorting AAPL would be to wait until after earnings are announced July 25th.

Grats on today's move (so far!)

Regardless of MS's "monster" cap, if it innovated instead of subsuming other companies and continually putting more and more lipstick on a pig, it would grow.

Look at all the things Microsoft has to compete against. Maybe they'll decide to focus on the portable player/media areas.

I guess Microsoft could get more sexy with their advertising like Google!

looks like Google's got Microsoft beat in the marketing department atm.

Wow, only $85.00 if you want to send in your iPhone for a new battery and be without it for 5-6 days. A total of ~$115.00 if you want a replacement phone while you wait!

R I P oFF!

600.00 phone
1,440.00 2/year service contract
115.00 and loss of data on phone if your battery happens to die in two years or if you decide to extend the contract

I'd like an iPhone please. Here's my $2,155.00

<3 ya Apple! Keep up the good work!
Apple Announces $85.95 iPhone Battery Replacement Program

Replacing your battery will cost $79 plus $6.95 shipping

When the Apple iPhone was first announced, one of the major criticisms of the device was its lack of a user-replaceable battery. With the complaints levied against the batteries used in Apple's iPod music players, the thought of not being able to replace the battery in a cell phone weighed heavily on many minds.

Apple looks to put some of those worries to rest with its announcement of a battery replacement program for the iPhone. Should your iPhone's battery ever need replacement, Apple will do the deed for $79 plus $6.95 shipping. Apple says that the repair will take three business days not counting shipping to and from the repair center.

All data on your iPhone will be erased when you send it off, so Apple suggests that you backup all of your important information with iTunes before sending it off.

Considering that an iPhone sent in for servicing could be out of the owners hand for as much as a week or more (including shipping time), Apple has another program in place for customers. If you absolutely can't live without your iPhone, Apple will rent you an iPhone for $29 while your device is being serviced.

In the end, it seems like a pretty big hassle for what could be accomplished with a simple, user-replaceable battery. Hopefully, Apple will take this into consideration for the 2G iPhone.
Wouldn't it be kinda nice if you could buy a spare battery in advance, for you know, a reasonable price, and have it handy in case you need to swap out your current battery?

I just checked the replacement price for my cell phone battery: $19.95

I can replace it myself and it will take 3 seconds...5 seconds max if I'm hyped up on caffeine at the time and fumble with the battery release slider. Zero data lost and a side trip at lunch to a store to buy one is all it will take. I assume this is true for most cell phones...except the iPhone...that will cost you a week down time, data lost, extra charges for rental phone...oh boy! I hope Apple includes a rag to wipe the face grease off front of the iPhone as part of the initial sale...or is that extra?

cingular gave me a free extended battery for my blackjack!

the shortcomings of the iphone were well documented way before release day, and most people who bought the iphone did so regardless of the problems. anyone who believed the things they said about the battery life deserves to be ripped off. apple did promise the same safari browser that is on OS X (which is crappy anyway), and it's not. the whole 'you must use iTunes' thing sucks too. the interface is slick, but as a phone or internet device it falls short. maybe it would be better in an area like cupertino where wifi is more pervasive, but in my shitty midwest town, i need 3G. i also need a device with bluetooth PAN so i can use my the data network on a laptop.

edit: i was quite surprised that the iPhone didn't support bluetooth PAN, since they snuck it in to a recent upgrade of OS X.

Activate your iPhone without having to go through AT&T or signing up for a plan.
Your WiFi and iPod functionality will work, but you won't have phone service.

The internal battery was the killer for me. I'm not going to ship my fucking phone off for god knows how long when the battery goes dead.

I can't believe people would actually pay for such a huge inconvenience.

I can't trade AAPL (except for the time quite awhile ago, on record in the VV archives to have AAPL pay for a PC computer upgrade for me on a short). Hate the company too much so it clouds my judgment. You can make fun of me if MVIS tanks in a year. That's the high risk stock I'm heavily invested in and will keep buying under $5 through the end of this year.

Winnow wrote:I heard on a podcast that the iPhone doesn't have a vibrate mode? Huh? Gotta have vibrate! Would suck to have to turn the phone off completely for meetings, movies, etc when you're expecting an important call.

Also heard than the internet browser doesnt have/support flash. That kinda sucks. It's not really a "fully functioning browser" if it doesn't have flash.

Other than that, someone elses list:

1. Bluetooth is ONLY good for connecting a headset. That's it.

2. There is no file browser on the device at all. Data must be organized (if at all) in the appropriate application.

3. The camera is a simple application that has ONE button: the shutter. Pictures come out okay on the device, but nothing too fancy on a monitor, especially if it was an attempt at a macro shot.

4. SIM card is damn near impossible to open, if at all. I didn't look into it extensively.

5. Web browser is slow, even over WLAN. Even the simple OneList web app that was created takes around 20 seconds to load over WLAN. You can not highlight, cut, copy, or paste and text from a website, and you can not save any images you find from a website either. The only nice thing about it is the tabbed browsing, which crashed on me when I went to Engadget and YouTube on two tabs. This is the only application that allows you to use the keyboard in landscape mode.

6. The keyboard sucks. It gets slightly better after the iPhone "learns" you, as the employees said, but even then, it's not a device you can use with one hand comfortably, much less without looking.

7. You can only send one picture at a time in an email.

8. No custom ringtones (yet, as we were being told) and the alert tones can not be changed whatsoever.

9. The default ringtones are incredibly lame.

10. The only form of customization outside of a lame default ringtone is the wallpaper, which you'll only see when you need to unlock the device or when you get a phone call.

11. "Picture pinching" or using two fingers to zoom on any content is certainly fun to play with, but not practical whatsoever. This operation depends solely on using the device with two hands.

12. No document editor or native viewer. You can not store documents on the device to be viewed, they can only be viewed as attachments when they're sent to your in an email.

13. Visual voicemail is laggy and reacts about the same way as pushing the fast forward and rewind buttons on traditional voicemail systems. The only advantage is for those that get that many voicemail messages a day that they need to sort them according to priority.

14. NO games. None.

15. No voice dialing.

16. No speed dialing (which can be made up by the "quick list", but getting to that quick list isn't as fast as holding a single key on a real keypad).

17. No video.

18. No MMS.

19. It's still <4GB for $500 and <8GB for $600

20. It only takes around 2 hours to explore every menu without any options for expandability except to scrounge around for new web apps that will load slowly and nowhere near as smoothly as the native apps.

-----

No vibrate, no voice dialing, slow net connection

This thing seems like it blows for what it's supposed to be used for.

Maybe that will rush Apple, instead of them taking years like they normally do to release something new, to release an normal video iPod based on this design and get rid of the phone and net features. That would be interesting if you could use divx/xvid and the battery lasted a long time.

Enjoy your 60/month 2 year ($1,200) contract with this! So, it's an $1,800.00 investment. Not so bad!

Typing on is seems a little odd. Could go faster on a Skyword!

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/video- ... 273909.php

This is old I think, but i'll comment.

I got mine when they dropped the price of the 4 gigs to 299. Was a good deal and I snatched one up.

Maybe by the time I picked mine up (like a month ago) these issues have been resolved. i'm incredily happy with mine. i think the webbrowsing is better than any other phone i've owned, and the built in youtube interface is very nice. The bluetooth thing is true. You can now convert your songs into ringtones. The keyboard takes time to adjust to, but not any worse than using the 1-9 keys or a tiny fucking blackberry keyboard. There aren't any games (yet). I'm not going to address everyone of those, but suffice to say, i'm happy with mine.

Apple is also allowing third parties to now create programs for it, so expect to see games coming soon. Among other things.
Going out to play pool now with my fellow klan members. Have a nice night. - Midnyte
