Marines 1, Bears 0

The bear sunk her teeth into their cooler and was headed to the woods. Then 6-year-old Logan took action.

“I got a shovel and I tried to scare it,” said Logan.

But Logan was the one who ended up getting scared and getting the bear’s attention. The bear dropped the cooler and headed towards Logan, growling.

“When Logan was being chased by the bear, I threw about five rocks at the bear to keep him away,” said Kyle Everhart.

The boys’ dad, an ex-Marine, knew he had to do something. So he grabbed the closest thing he could find – a log.

“(I) threw it at it and it happened to hit the bear in the head and I thought it just knocked it out but it actually ended up killing the bear,” said Chris.
How much of a badass do you have to feel like when you accidentally kill a bear with a log that you threw at it?

I'm not big into killing things, but when it comes down to the bear vs. your son, the bear gots to go.

I hope they nail this guy with a huge fine. When your camping in bear country you keep your food in a bear proof box or hanging up in a tree.

This guys shitbag son started it by throwing a shovel at the bear (potential future darwin award winner I imagine). If he had taken out a kodiak or grizzly bear I might be impressed, but a 300 pound black bear is more akin to killing a big (really big) dog.

I guess I'm just biased since I like bears more than I like rednecks.

Right, so he should have just said "well, my son shouldn't have fucked with the bear, now he has to own up". Moron.

exactly winnow. we need to start asking for some fucking responsibility from our younger kids. If you're going to be messing with a bear there's going to be CONSEQUENCES or have you not watched the REAL WORLD? The liberal media and self-esteem "schooling" has gone too far! Parents need to stop babying their children and let them face their own challenges. The black bear was probably pissed off about the media caring for it's arch enemy, the polar bear, with all the recent global warming bullshit videos. It's time we let our 6 year olds poop and fend for themselves.

You're an idiot. Thanks for making a joke about everything and trying to answer it for me.

A 6 year old can't be held responsible for something like that. He made a mistake and thankfully he gets to live and learn from it. An animal died and not a human being. I can't imagine how anyone could give a fuck since no malicious intent was apparent here.

come on, like there's anything really to say about the article. No one truly thinks the father shouldn't have accidently killed the bear to protect his son.

How do you know he is a redneck? because he is a former Marine? because he has a shovel? because he owns a cooler?

Those fucking black bears can be super aggressive, once that bear growled and came toward the kid the only outcome was going to be a dead kid. I would really like to see Demags take out a black bear with a stick, even a spear.

I fucking hate black bears. I grew up in a rural setting and every couple years one of the damned things would wander through and regardless of what some believe, they can do a fuck of a pile of damage. Greenhouses, lawn furniture, ATVs, gardening shit, anything you keep outside they can and will get into. They are curious animals and in cases where they learn that garbage can be a food source (i.e. human smell means food not danger), they are dangerous, especially to kids. I remember when I was about 8 or 9 one was on our next door neighbours deck and knocked out the glass and screen on his door, trying to get at him into the house (it contracted an acute case of lead poisoning shortly thereafter). Yeah, the 6 year old deserves a smack on the ass from his old man, and a lecture on fucking with animals (even at 6 you should know better than to mess with big animals, be they dogs bears or whatever), but the bear itself isn't worthy of any tears. The father deserves a thumbs up for a nice toss.

Not sure if this had been posted......

http://www.katu.com/news/national/8050737.html
By Associated PressAMERICAN FORK, Utah (AP) - An 11-year-old boy was dragged screaming from his family's tent and killed by a black bear during a Father's Day outing in the Utah wilderness.

The boy, his mother, stepfather and a 6-year-old brother were sleeping in a large tent Sunday night in American Fork Canyon, about 30 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, when the stepfather heard a scream.

The boy and his sleeping bag were gone. His body was found about 400 yards away, said Lt. Dennis Harris of the Utah County sheriff's office. His identity was not released.

Authorities said the bear, a male possibly 300 pounds, probably was the same one that was snooping around a different tent in the same area before dawn Sunday.

I feel sorry for the bear. Not taking correct precautions in a bear area is wrong and led to the unnecessary death of the animal. I would have killed it too and not accidentally if a child's life was threatened and I saw no other option. I would expect to be fined for failure to take appropriate precautions.

What he said. The man of course had every right to defend his kid from the bear, and it is pretty remarkable that he killed it by throwing a log at it, but I hope he suffers some stiff fines for his negligence. Oh, and teaches his kid not to wave a shovel at a bear!

I never said the father shouldnt have protected his son, I said I hope he gets a serious fine.

Any responsible parent that takes children into the outdoors should be teaching them what they need to know, things like leave the fucking wildlife alone, dont fuck with bears, rocks in the river are usually slippery. dont take food or the clothes you prepared the food in into your tent. If they dont they have no one to blame but themselves.

And yeah I called him a redneck because of the location of the incident, not because he was a marine or owns a shovel or a cooler, thats one of the stupidest assumptions ive seen on this board in a long time.

LOL I got called a moron by funkmaster. Whats next? You gonna come spit in my face now hoping to cap me? Idiot.

That all being said, if I was in the same situation I probably would have done the same thing, but I still hope he gets fined.

If you mean the assumption that that he's a redneck due to the location of the incident, then I agree, that is a stupid assumption.
But somehow, I don't think that's what you meant.
