Hacking PSP... again
(I sold my last psp and the 10 umds I bought)
I picked up a new PSP with the sole intent of hacking the hell out of it and never having to buy any games since they aren't in the budget. It's quite awesome how the PSP scene has developed with custom firmwares now freely available.
The PSP came with firmware 2.60... 3.50 is out, but you don't want that!
I was able to find the 2.80 upgrade and used that. From 2.80, it's a downgrade all the way back to 1.50.
From 1.50, there's a custom firmware upgrade to 3.40 OE-A. It includes everything from all the newer firmwares, and quite a few extra goodies.
It runs ISO images of UMD's. It also supports Compressed ISO's (i fit 12 full games on a 4gb memory stick)
It runs PS1 games that have been converted to psp's EBOOT format... there's quite a few out there on the newsgroups and you can convert your own. I played Gran Turismo 1 last night just to test out that functionality... it ran full speed but not full screen.
It runs all the homebrew for the different versions.
The 'format memory stick' option creates the entire folder structure including the iso folder and the different game folders for different firmware version homebrews.
There's an N64 emulator with dynarec that's pretty far in development... It's not really playable with sound, but it's getting there.
The Snes emulator is perfect.
If you're thinking about a portal game system, the PSP takes the cake, and you'd better hurry up... the next batch out of Sony will come with a version 4.x firmware with hardware specifically designed to prevent tampering and downgrading.

Re: Hacking PSP... again
Yeah with 3.50 Sony changed it up and merged some stuff (or something). So right now Sony has the upperhand as OE only goes to 3.40. 3.50 has been out a couple weeks but no word yet from Dark Alex. Also if you get a PSP with any firmware above 2.71 (but below 3.40 (I think)) it can be downgraded but requires the unpatched version of Liberty City Stories. Which if you don't know someone that has it you may not be able to downgrade. Also keep in mind that if you ever decide to upgrade using Sonys official firmwares there may be a possibility to brickify your PSP.
I thought the GBA emulator was done rather well. There are a couple out but I think it was gpSP. The save states are nice. And you get a screenshot of each one so you know what's what. It's much better than playing them on DS.

Once again looks like all firmware versions will be able to downgrade soon. If you're thinking of getting a PSP in the near future and think you'll want to run homebrew or downgrade it, pick up a copy of Lumines. It's a good game and worth the <$20 you can pick it up for!Following research in conjunction with Archaemic, Noobz are proud to present the first ever all-firmware exploit for the PSP. Based on Lumines, the "Illuminati" exploit is a user-mode exploit using a buffer overflow in the savedata file - similar to the GTA exploit.
That's right - if you've got a legal UMD copy of Lumines, then you can run homebrew on your PSP - whatever the firmware version. That includes v3.50! Right now, the only homebrew is the Hello World demo released below - but in future we intend to release a HEN and downgrader.
- Check that you have an EU or US version of Lumines (ULES00043 or ULUS10002). Currently we don't have a version for the Japanese version, but we're working on it, as soon as we get hold of a Japanese UMD.
- Extract the contents of the 'MS_ROOT' folder from the ZIP file into the top-level of your memory stick. (HINT: If you wind up with an 'MS_ROOT' folder on the stick, you've done it wrong).
- Start the game, and as soon as it gets to the 'Press START' screen, press START. If you wait until the demo has started, the exploit may not work.
- The screen should go blank, and the exploit will start after a few moments. It doesn't do anything except look pretty at this stage - but feel free to enjoy the first homebrew on your v3.10 - v3.50 PSP

PSP firmware exploit found in Lumines; sales jump 5900% on Amazon

From being ranked 600th to 10th!
Ubisoft must be happy that their game is the one that can help hack a PSP. Other publishers will now probably add a backdoor and then a month or so after a game release, let it be known on the sly that it can be used as a hack tool!

It's ranked #1 at the moment. I wonder if there's a connection!
(Oh, back down to #2. Wii out in front again)

Re: Hacking PSP... again
After all the good news about the downgrader... Only 2 days after Dark Alex announced 3.51 OE was being worked on he suddenly quits the scene. OE is dead! One has to wonder what sort of threats Sony made.

Re: Hacking PSP... again
They probably gave DarkAlex a job on the PSP team or a position on the design team for the next PSP.

Re: Hacking PSP... again
nothing confirmed yet... it would be a big loss, but I'm pretty sure someone will fill his role in the scene.

A) I doubt they bought Dark Alex off. Why pay him when you can simply send your lawyers after someone? It's a lot cheaper that way and more effective.
B) Look ike a Russian group has picked up the ball and is releasing custom firmware for the PSP. M33 ( http://m-33.narod.ru/ ) it's called and it's basically OE reverse engineered but they are improving on it. I haven't tried it yet but from reading the threads it sounds like it works well. It's currently supporting FW 3.51 which is Sony's latest.

Re: Hacking PSP... again
In light of my most recent impulse purchase (360 elite) I am willing to sell my PSP.
Is anyone interested in a perfect condition (barely used!) PSP, nicely configured with 3.50 OE firmware capable of playing all games, even PSX games.... comes with a nice zip-up case, 1 umd game (worms) and a 4gb stick with 12 games. optionally, cheaper without the 4gb stick and i'll provide 20 games on dvd.
$200 shipped. any takers?
