I'm a Father!

No holds barred discussion. Someone train you and steal your rare spawn? Let everyone know all about it! (Not for the faint of heart!)

I'm a Father!

Post by Arborealus »

Well sorta...

This morning my Bluebirds hatched 3 babies...two eggs left *crosses fingers*...

The parents are fine and I am supplying plenty of mealworms which the father assiduously delivers to the mother and babies...Between food deliveries he sits perched and puffed guarding against the villianous squirrels who used to use the fence behind the house as a highway...they've had to detour 60 feet south to the other fence to avoid a beating by a furious blue flurry...

I've also had 8 carolina wrens, half a dozen tufted titmice, a pair of chickadees, 3 Bluejays, one Downy Woodpecker and 43 billion Cardinals fledged and fed in the yard this spring...good year for baby birds it seems...:)

Crazy! 43 Billion! I haven't seen a birthing like that since... I don't think I've seen a birthing like that. You must clean up a lot of bird poop!

Get rid of those blue jays! We always used to have problems with them eating the blue bird eggs.. somehow they would manage to get their fat bastard heads into the blue bird houses.

Squirrels are always a major issue for birds, which is why there is a bb gun by the sliding door at my parents house.

The Jays are happier with the peanuts. And I have extensions to keep them and most other predators out of the box. A rat snake could get through but I have a 3 foot can baffle on the pole so they're safe. The squirrels are only a problem when they are protein hungry...and I have plenty of food that they have access to so they just travel through. The biggest predator threat will be hawks when they fledge and well there isn't much that can be done for those other than chase 'em off when they start stalking.

I'll get some pics when all the eggs have hatched should be this weekish.

I have two big colonies of mealworms going, and lots of beetle love going on in there so I should be flush on baby food.

I'm off to relocate a colony of bats from a friend's attic. I'm hoping I can get them to relocate permanently to one of my big roost boxes.

My sister has a cardinal that frequents her bird feeder. I'd never actually seen one in person, so it was pretty neat.

That really his? That is a really good Squirrel Proof Feeder. My parents have one amongst their feeders. I just use can baffles on my pole systems and have 4 feeders they can use and not destroy.

Grats Arb!

Make sure to watch out for any cats around the area! I put a bell on my cat and she's still catching a few birds each week.

Yeah, cats tend to stay clear of my yard as my neighbor's dog (my Step-Dog) come's through my fence at will and keeps the yard marked...:)...And all the feeders and nest boxes are well clear of places cats can hide...Also sometimes for no apparent reason nerf balls fly at cats in the backyard (hides the nerf slingshot)...I <3 kitties but not where they don't belong...

Photos are going to be tough until they get a bit larger. They are down in the cup of the nest and still very small so my little cam won't focus at 4 inches and my big ones won't fit in the box to get the shot...:/...So here is the best I could get for now

Image

I added some pics of them as well as my feeders, pond, patio on teh myspace page...

lol yeah it is actually.

I get a kick out of watching squirrels try to jump onto the pole birdfeeder systems and continually missing.
